  • Patent number: 5673603
Abstract: A device for cutting to shape advancing material webs, in particular made of fibrous materials, comprises a rotatingly driven shape cutting roller and a rotatingly driven counter cutting roller. The shape cutting roller has a shape cutting edge and the counter cutting roller a smooth cylinder surface. Both rollers are mounted in a machine frame by means of pivot bearings, and the distance between the axes of the rollers is adjustable. The rollers are rotatably mounted in separate, first and second machine frame parts which, for their part, are supported on a common machine base. One of these machine frame parts is held on an adjustable wedge-shaped guide means for adjusting the distance between the axes of the rollers. Each machine frame part is adapted to be secured separately on the machine base.

  • Patent number: 5103703
Abstract: Sheet cutting apparatus for severing a rapidly-moving web, such as printed paper, into cut sheets in two stages. In the first stage, spaced cuts are made along a transverse cutting line of the web. The web is trained between belts which support the cut portions of the web, and the uncut portions of the web are severed to separate sheets. The sheets are conveyed out of the cutting station and into further apparatus. Preferably, the belts for supporting the web during the second cutting operation are trained around the knife and anvil rolls which make the cuts. The purpose of the belts is to prevent the leading edge of the web or a cut sheet from being projected forward of its support, thus tending to become dog-eared or misfed. The cuts made at the first and second cutting stations can be arranged in various patterns to remedy mis-timing of the respective cutting stations.

Abstract: A radially adjustable anvil roll assembly is provided for use with a die cutting cylinder of a rotary die cutting press. The adjustable anvil roll assembly comprises a shaft mounted for selective and intermittent rotation on the press, and a pair of eccentrics provided on an intermediate portion of the shaft. A hollow cylindrical sleeve is mounted for free rotation on the shaft eccentrics. Rotating the shaft so that the maximum eccentricity of the eccentrics is directed toward the die cutting cylinder adjustably positions the cylindrical sleeve in its closest adjusted position toward the cylinder. Rotating the shaft 180.degree. so that the maximum eccentricity of the eccentrics is directed away from the die cutting cylinder adjustably positions the cylindrical sleeve in a radially adjusted position furthest away from the die cutting cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5003855
Abstract: A chopper having a feed mechanism for strands of continuous materials such as glass filaments includes an outer rotatable ring which receives and supports a plurality of radially oriented blades and an inner rotatable feed and pressure wheel disposed eccentrically within the outer ring. The ring and wheel are driven synchronously by a common drive unit such that the tangential speeds of the blade faces and pressure wheel are equal. The pressure wheel is positioned adjacent but not coincident to the circle defined by the inner faces of the blades. Continuous strands of material are provided to the chopper and a two position roller feeds the material to the feed and pressure wheel when its linear speed matches the tangential speed of the blades and wheel. The wheel directs the strands to the faces of the blades upon which the strands build up. As the thickness of the strands on the face of the blades increase, the wheel forces the strands further into the blades thereby cutting them.

  • Patent number: 5001950
Abstract: A rotary die cutter includes an anvil roll and at least one die roll. One or more sheet metal dies with raised cutting edges are carried on the die roll to cut patterns in a web of material passing between the die and the anvil roll. The die cutter has a pair of rigid side frames spanned by a very rigid spreader. While the anvil roll is end-mounted between the side frames, the die roll is mounted from the spreader. A drive shaft rotatable in the side frames and driven from a lineshaft by a gear system transits rotation to the die roll, while allowing the die roll freedom of movement for independent vertical, axial and circumferential adjustments. This mounting and drive of the die roll can accommodate a full width press web using die rolls having a small diameter, typically a single repeat roll, and one whose length is comparable to its circumference. A pair of mutually slidable wedges acting against a spring clamping force adjusts the vertical position of bearing blocks that rotatably mount the die roll.
