  • Patent number: 5765617
Abstract: An infeed system that orients a log for a processing unit. A flight conveyor, a log turner and a sharp chain are in an overlapping arraignment. The flight conveyor conveys a log past a scanner which inputs scan data into a computer which determines the profile and orientation on the flight conveyor. The computer determines the desired orientation of the log for the processing unit. The log turner is arranged to rotate and skew the log to the desired orientation. The log is then transferred to the sharp chain conveyor. The overlapping arrangement of the flight conveyor, log turner and sharp chain maintains full control of the log at all times. The sharp chain conveys the log past a second scanner which inputs the scan data to the computer to determine the actual orientation of the log on the sharp chain. The infeed system may also be provided with a shift and lift mechanism for further controlling the log position relative to the processing unit.

Abstract: A cryostatic microtome with an automatic approach of the preparation automatically stops the feed movement between the microtome knife and a frozen preparation towards each other upon a mechanical contact between the knife and the preparation. An electrical voltage of a few volts is applied between the microtome knife and the preparation. A small current which appears, due to the intrinsic conductivity of the preparation, upon mechanical contact between the preparation and the microtome knife, and a smaller voltage drop at the preparation resulting therefrom, is current amplified by means of a preamplifier connected as an impedance converter and subsequently measured. The feed movement between the preparation and the microtome knife is automatically stopped when the voltage at the amplifier output falls below a predefined threshold voltage.

  • Patent number: 5737988
Abstract: A media buffer capable of buffering two lengths of media, is fed a first length of media from an imagesetter at a first speed, and releases the media to a processor at a second speed. An input media sensor senses the media entering the buffer. Drive rollers take up the leading edge of the media at the imagesetter speed. Shortly thereafter a signal from an output media sensor located between the drive rollers and the processor, opens an input door to an input bin and stops the drive rollers. The incoming media continues to be fed by the imagesetter forming a first slack loop within the input bin. The imagesetter signals the buffer that the media has been cut, thereby actuating drive rollers to advance the media at the processor speed to a pair of rollers in the processor. A signal from the processor sensor opens an output door to an output bin. The drive rollers increase speed to transport the first piece of media from the input bin to the output bin thereby forming a second slack loop.

The infeed system is equipped with a conveyor which transversely advances the board, a conventional optical scanning station, and a computer which calculates a longitudinal reference datum line and a preferred edging path for the board and places movable positioning pegs at a predetermined distance away from the preferred edging path. A novel mechanism is used to seize and transport the board further along the path by the predetermined distance so that the board's longitudinal reference datum line is placed colinear with the preferred infeed line into the edging device. The novel mechanism is characterized by the use of rotatable eccentric arm which sequentially advance and retract movable clamping jaws. After the board is placed along its preferred infeed line, grip rollers can longitudinally feed it into the edging device.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for around the curve sawing is shown and described wherein a group of roller assemblies are positionable along a selected semicircular path having a point of tangency relative to lines of cut provided by an assembly of cutting blades whereby each roller assembly provides a transport path normal to the axes of rotation for each roller assembly and tangent to the selected semicircular path. Upon actuation of the roller assemblies, as positioned along the selected semicircular path, the wood product, as captured between rollers of the roller assemblies, moves along the selected semicircular path and into the cutting device for cutting along concentric lines of cut. The method and apparatus is particularly well suited for use with tree species having irregularly shaped protrusions and formations deviating from an idealized curved centerline of the log or cant.

  • Patent number: 5249491
Abstract: A flitch or cant is successively transported by a pair of differentially operated clamps, first to a scanning station, and then to a sawing station where the wane is removed. A series of flitches is processed in this manner such that as the wane edge from a first flitch is sawn, a next flitch in succession is optically scanned. The sawing and scanning is accomplished by means of a combination saw and scanner which moves in a direction longitudinal of the flitch as respective flitches are held in stationary positions at the sawing station and at the scanning station. Between passes of the saw-scanner combination, the sawn flitch is conveyed away and the next flitch in line is conveyed forwardly to the sawing position while being skewed by the clamps in accordance with the characterization generated by the scanner.

  • Patent number: 5235882
Abstract: A device which trims off the perforated margin strips of printer paper and cuts the paper transversely to separate it into individual pages. The paper which discharges from the printer is drawn around a tension bar and is applied to a toothed belt driven by feed wheels. Cutter wheels act against a grooved roller to cut along the tear lines of the margin strips. A photocell based counting system counts the perforations which pass the photocell to indicate each time the paper is advanced to position one of the transverse fold lines at a cutting station. Then, the paper is stopped and a cutter wire is pulled through the fold line to separate the leading page from the rest of the paper sheet. Each time a new sheet of paper is loaded, a special control circuit assures that the initial advance of the sheet stops with the leading edge of the paper at the cutting station.

Abstract: A feed system with improved preposition is shown and describe wherein a prepositioning stage is located vertically above a feed stage such that movement of a wood product from the prepositioning stage to the feed stage corresponds to movement of the wood product through a transfer path having orientation corresponding to that of the height dimension of the wood product. This prepositioning configuration provides relatively more efficient movement of the wood product along its transfer path from a prepositioning stage to a feed stage as compared to prior methods where the transfer path is horizontal and the wood product moves in a direction corresponding to its relatively greater width dimension. The vertical orientation of the transfer path as provided by a prepositioning stage above a feed stage also allows for more efficient sequencing of mechanical events within the system to further contribute to improved productivity.

Abstract: A pilot release for a press feeder has a spring-loaded support for one of two pinch rollers through which stock material is fed. A cam follower attached to the support engages a cam which is driven by a servo motor. During operation of the press, a position sensor on the press outputs a signal indicative of the position of the press crankshaft. The signal is input to a signal processor which includes a motor control circuit which drives the servo motor of the press feeder. A position sensor on the servo motor also inputs a signal to the signal processor which compares the position of the press to the position of the servo motor, and drives the servo motor to synchronize the motor to the press. The synchronization is such that as pilot pins of the press contact the stock material in the press, an eccentricity of the cam engages the cam follower.
