Patent number: 6393954Abstract: The present invention eases possible rubbing between an upper cutting edge and a work cutting surface of a work cutting apparatus during the elevation of the upper cutting edge to prevent the upper cutting edge from being worn in order to increase its lifetime. In a device for cutting a work by elevating and lowering a movable upper cutting edge 12 relative to a fixed lower cutting edge 13, an upper-cutting-edge, tight-contact avoidance device 10 is provided for widening the clearance between the upper cutting edge 12 and a work cutting surface. The device 10 is comprised of a clearance adjustment mechanism 22 for adjusting the clearance between the upper cutting edge 12 and the lower cutting edge 13, and control device 35 for regulating operation of the clearance adjustment mechanism 22.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2000Date of Patent: May 28, 2002Assignee: Murata Kikai Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Toshihiro Yonekura

Publication number: 20010045148Abstract: An apparatus for cutting and matching parts in a layup of material includes a cutting tool for cutting the parts and a camera for detecting and analyzing match points located on the individual parts that need to be matched to other parts. The apparatus also includes a computer having instructions for optimizing a process for matching various parts in the layup resulting in an increase of effective usable area of the cutter table and in increased efficiency in use of material in the layup. The computer includes instructions to direct the camera to process match points that are disposed within a tool offset, defined as a distance between the cutting tool and the camera, prior to advancing the layup to a take-off end of the cutter table.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 20, 2001Publication date: November 29, 2001Inventors: Thomas Gerent, Jed R. Patent number: 6192777Abstract: An apparatus and method for cutting pieces of material from a workpiece, such as a web of patterned fabric, which includes irregularities or which is misaligned with respect to a coordinate system of the cutting apparatus. The workpiece is spread on a cutting table where it is cut by a numerically controlled cutter in accord with an electronic marker stored in the cutter controller. The marker is matched to the workpiece and appropriate adjustments are made to the marker before the workpiece is cut. A laser, operatively connected to the controller, projects a match target onto the workpiece at a point corresponding to a selected point on the marker. The marker is then adjusted such that the selected point coincides with a desired location on the workpiece. Adjustment is achieved by electronically displacing the match target from a non preferred location to a preferred one. Software in the controller translates this displacement into appropriate adjustments to the marker.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1998Date of Patent: February 27, 2001Assignee: Gerber Garment Technology, Inc.Inventors: Kevin M.
