  • Patent number: 4603717
Abstract: Disclosed is a template for forming tapered sliding dovetail joints. The template is particularly useful for making tapered sliding dovetail joints using powered hand tools, such as a router. The template has a longitudinally extending groove which is narrower at one end than at the other. To form a sliding dovetail groove, a workpiece is placed underneath the template, and a dovetail cutter is passed along the sides of the groove. The template also has two longitudinally extending grooves which are tapered towards each other. To cut a sliding dovetail tongue, the end of a workpiece is placed below the template so the edges of the workpiece are exposed through the grooves, but the middle of the workpiece is covered by the template. A dovetail cutter is passed along the sides of each groove, creating a dovetail tongue. The template may also be secured to a dovetailing jig, to provide secure alignment and holding of the workpieces against the template.

  • Patent number: 4574671
Abstract: A radial arm of a radial arm saw comprises a lightweight metal casting of inverted U cross-section and having opposing longitudinal grooves in the inner faces of the side walls of the inverted U. A metal strip of resilient arcuate cross-section is press fitted into each groove to form guides for supporting and guiding a power saw unit movable along the radial arm. The lighter weight of the radial arm is particularly advantageous for a portable radial arm saw, and the inserted metal strips form inexpensive durable guides.

  • Patent number: 4474514
Abstract: A drilling jig is disclosed which not only permits the drilling of multiple holes on a flat surface or on the edges of a workpiece, but accessories are also disclosed which permit the drilling jig to be converted into a divider, a compass, inside and outside calibers, and a cutting guide for use with either a knife or a saber saw blade. The drilling jig consists of one or more elements having fixed drill guide bushings located along their lengths fastened together end to end. An element having a pair of drill guide bushings which are adjustable along the length of this element is also joined to the elements having fixed drill bushings so as to enable the jig to set any spacing along the length of the work. Adjustable guides are affixed to the sides of the drilling jig to enable its accurate placement on the edge of a workpiece. A device is also disclosed for fastening the elements together to enable their use as a rigid unit, while at the same time enabling them to be readily disconnected and stored.

  • Patent number: 3961548
Abstract: Guide apparatus for a rotary saw having a circular saw blade freely moveable longitudinally of an arbor which includes a pair of guide plates mounted in a frame on opposite sides of and parallel to the saw blade and adapted to be adjustably positioned longitudinally of the arbor. Each of the plates have a plurality of spiral grooves formed in its face. The grooves have open loading ends, relative to direction of rotation of the saw, opening out of edges of the guide plate so that rotation of the saw blade induces a flow of air into the grooves. The grooves are effectively closed at trailing ends so as to develop air cushions between the saw blade and the guide faces and thus stabilize the saw blade between the guide plates.
