  • Patent number: 6085627
Abstract: Apparatus for continuously shaping a compressible or cellular polymer material, such as polyurethane foam, by cutting portions of the material from a surface of one or more slabs of material (180) includes two compression rollers (146, 146a), two moving patterned platforms (132, 132a) interposed between the compression rollers, and one or more cutting blades (76) for transversely cutting the slab or slabs just as the cellular material emerges from between the compression rollers. At least one of the moving patterned platforms, preferably an endless belt, defines a recess or pattern of recesses. When a single slab or multiple slabs of material are fed and compressed between the compression rollers, a portion of the material from one side of the slab or slabs fills the recess or recesses in one of the moving patterned belts. The blade then transversely cuts the cellular material.

  • Patent number: 5992286
Abstract: Coin wrapper opening apparatus that has a surface with a curved or angled cutting edge fixed to it so that the cutting edge faces away from the surface and projects away from it at a height effective to score or cut the wrapper of a wrapped roll of coins, when brought into cutting relationship with the roll. In several embodiments the surface also includes a guidepath to guide wrapped rolls to the cutting edge. In one embodiment, the cutting edge is shielded by a resilient flap that pushes up and away when a wrapped coin roll passes the cutting edge, and the flap then returns to its original shielding position when the roll is removed. In other embodiments, the cutting edge is shielded by a resilient strip fixed over the cutting edge so that the resilient strip stands away from the cutting edge with no pressure on it, and the resilient strip deforms to allow the cutting edge to pass through an aperture when the apparatus is placed against a wrapped coin roll.

In contrast to conventional constructions, in which driven feed rollers for the cant are located before and beyond the actual slicing device, driven roller pairs are provided directly in the region over which the blade, which forms a very acute angle with the feed direction, extends. The feed roller pairs are moreover floatingly journaled so that they do not affect the position of the cant. By the novel arrangement, an overly lengthy force transmission path through the cant itself from the feed rollers to the blade is avoided.

Abstract: This invention involves a novel blade holder for use in food-processing machines particularly skinning machines. This blade holder has as two major elements a top and a bottom piece having at their front terminal portions a place where the blade is clamped. In the center section of each piece are a number of connecting screws or bolts which not only connect the top and bottom pieces but also act as a fulcrum. Thus, when the rear sections of the top and bottom pieces are forced apart by a lever action, their front terminal portions move tightly together to form a firm grip or clamp effect on the blade. To remove the blade, the rear sections are brought closer together thus releasing the tight clamp in the front terminal portions and thus releasing the blade.

  • Patent number: 5152204
Abstract: An improvement is made to a die cutting press and to the method of die cutting in a press by providing two opposing and oppositely driven clamping bars which move together to clamp the die board and to accurately position the clamped die board at a predetermined location within the press. The press is operated to determine the adequacy of the cut produced by the die in sheet material fed into the press. If the cut is unsatisfactory, the opposing clamp bars are quickly driven apart thereby releasing the die board. The die board can be removed from the press and then manipulated or modified to cure any imperfection in the cut. The modified die board is then reinserted into the press and accurately repositioned at the predetermined location within the press by driving the opposing clamping bars towards each other against the die board.

  • Patent number: 5095875
Abstract: A integrally-formed knife for producing thick waffle-cut and lattice-cut potato slices has a blade and a shank extending rearwardly from the blade. The blade has opposing inclined surfaces which meet at a forward blade portion to define a thin corrugated cutting edge. Each blade surface has undulations defining a set of alternating grooves and ridges each extending rearwardly from the cutting edge and terminating at the shank. The relative inclination of the blade surfaces results in progressively greater blade thickness at a rear blade portion such that the blade is relatively rigid and self-supporting. This eliminates use of clamps on the opposing blade faces and consequent interference by clamps with slicing. The sets of grooves diverge relative to one another adjacent the rear blade portion where their bottoms are spaced in a direction transverse to the blade surfaces. The shank is unobtrusively connected to the relatively wide rear blade portion between the bottoms of rearward ends of the grooves.

Abstract: A guard-guide device for protecting the hands of the operator of vertical sweet corn cutters and for keeping cutting knives properly aligned. The device comprises an overlapping set of guards and guides attached to the two halves of a sweet corn cutter to be spaced above and outward from the opposed half-round knives of the cutter. The half-round knives of the sweet corn cutter are mounted on top of flexible legs attached to a metal base or can be stamped from a single piece of metal. As corn is pushed down between the knives the natural outward taper of the cob causes the metal legs to move outward. The overlapping guards also expand outward at the same time and in so doing keep the metal knives aligned at 180 degrees to each other for perfect cutting of corn kernels. As the downward thrust of the corn ear is completed the overlapping guards keep the operators fingers from coming into contact with the sharp cutting edges.
