  • Patent number: 4389925
Abstract: A beverage extracting and dispensing machine for use with flattened round cartridges, which contain a brewable product, such as ground coffee, freeze-dried coffee, tea, broth and the like. The cartridges have permeable upper and lower walls and a substantially cylindrical sidewall.A cartridge may be slid to a brewing station in which it is laterally embraced by opposite clamping jaws. During its movement to the brewing station a new cartridge spreads the jaws apart and pushes an old cartridge away from the brewing station. The spreading apart of the jaws starts an automatic brewing cycle at the beginning of which a presser plate is lowered onto the cartridge and presses it with a tight seal on an underlying fixed support while the cartridge is laterally clamped by the jaws.

  • Patent number: 4204464
Abstract: This invention relates to a process and apparatus for the production of an aroma flavor concentrate from aroma- and flavor-bearing substrates, especially roasted and ground coffee. More particularly, the invention is concerned with a process for continuously de-aromatizing and desorbing aroma and flavor constituents from said substrates by passing wet steam counter-currently through a continuous columnar bed of said substrate, said bed flowing upwardly through a substantially upright vacuum-tight desorption column. Wet steam is applied in an amount and manner to form and maintain a substantially stationary desorption zone in said flowing columnar bed at a finite distance above a bottom inlet of said upright desorption column. The stationary desorption zone is formed by the condensation of the wet steam as it passes into a progressively cooler temperature gradient in said flowing columnar bed.

  • Patent number: 4007674
Abstract: A container of evacuated double wall construction has an open neck for receiving a beverage after the beverage has been heated to a desired temperature. A stopper member receivable in the open neck incorporates an evacuated electric light bulb covering a major portion of the cross sectional area of the neck to provide further heat insulation and also radiate heat onto beverage within the container. Regulation of the heat to maintain the beverage at a desired constant temperature is accomplished by a pressure actuated switch incorporated in the stopper member. When water is used as the beverage, the heated water can be passed from the container through an outlet spout to a cartridge housing including pay out and take up spools for a series of packets connected together to form a ribbon. Successive packets may be positioned under the spout and include coffee beans, the cartridge including a cup receiving area so that coffee can be brewed directly into a cup.

  • Patent number: 3948157
Abstract: A filter is provided for a brew cup for use in a hot beverage brewing machine such as a coffee brewing and dispensing machine. The filter is attached to the inside of a brew cup about halfway up the side walls and to the center of a guide spider axially movable within the brew cup. By this arrangement, spent grounds and fines are prevented from traveling with the brewed coffee or other beverage as it passes through the brew cup. When the brew cup mechanism is inverted and moved to the dumping station, this arrangement provides for the dumping of substantially all of the spent grounds and fines by a snap action applied to the spider and the filter material. The filter material is restrained from engaging the floor of the brew cup to prevent clogging and caking of the filter material and fines or spent grounds on the floor of the brew cup.

  • Patent number: 3941042
Abstract: An automatic coffee brewing system for brewing coffee in a chamber and dispensing the brewed coffee into a container. The chamber is automatically flushed upon completion of the brewing cycle. A predetermined amount of coffee grinds is automatically inserted into the coffee brewing chamber through an open lid. The brewing chamber is then rotated until the lid is closed. Hot brewing water is then inserted into the chamber, while the lid is automatically locked to prevent leakage of the brewed coffee. The brewed coffee then is removed from the chamber. The chamber is then rotated to enable the coffee grounds to be flushed from the chamber. The chamber is then rotated into position for brewing another container of coffee. A conical-shaped filter in the chamber enables brewed coffee to pass through to an outlet and simultaneously, retains the grounds in the chamber. During the flush cycle, water is forced into the chamber and the coffee grounds are cleared from the filter.
