  • Patent number: 10412928
Abstract: The push button operated rodent restrainer is designed to hold a rodent in position to access their tail veins during tail vein injections or for extraction of blood. The assembly includes a base rectangular platform supporting two hinged, transparent half-cylinders. When the assembly is closed, the half-cylinders form a closed tube, which restrains the rodent. The half-cylinders are made of transparent plastic to allow laboratory staff to observe the rodent. The tube facilitates restraining the rodent and includes a longitudinal slit to allow proper ventilation while the rodent is restrained. One end of the closed tube has a slot, which allows the rodent's tail to protrude outside the tube for access to the tail. A push button mounted on a resilient lever is connected to the tube halves such that when the push button is depressed, the tube opens, and when the push button is released, the tube closes.

Abstract: Investigation of in vivo models of disease requires imaging studies involving single subjects in single imaging sessions, serial imaging of individuals or groups of subjects, and integration of data across diverse and heterogeneous experimental methodologies. Each type of experiment is preferably supported by various feature sets that can be rigorously applied to produce quantitative, reproducible results. Current imaging scanners are not equipped with standardized capability that supports an automated and scientifically rigorous workflow suited to hypothesis testing. An imaging system includes a research workstation at which a user can design, execute, study, and report imaging plans. Flexibility that comes along with a modular design of the system allows the user to customize workflow parameters for more robust hypothesis testing.

  • Patent number: 8590487
Abstract: An enclosure or burrow restrains an awake animal during an imaging procedure. A tubular body, made from a radiolucent material that does not attenuate x-rays or gamma rays, accepts an awake animal. A proximal end of the body includes an attachment surface that corresponds to an attachment surface of an optically transparent and optically uniform window. An anti-reflective coating may be applied to an inner surface, an outer surface, or both surfaces of the window. Since the window is a separate element of the enclosure and it is not integrally formed as part of the body, it can be made with optically uniform thickness properties for improved motion tracking of markers on the animal with a camera during the imaging procedure. The motion tracking information is then used to compensate for animal movement in the image.

Abstract: This invention is a protected enclosure to allow upland game birds including bobwhite quail to be introduced into and to thrive in the wild with low mortality rate. This is accomplished through the use of an acclimation portion where the birds become used to feeding and watering in the protected enclosure while being allowed to ingress and egress between the acclimation portion and the feeding and watering portion. Provision is made for one or more call birds to be isolated after the acclimation period upon initial introduction into the wild. The call bird or birds can then be reunited with the covey. Commercially available cooked ration can be used which allows vitamins, minerals and other supplements to be added to the normal diet of the birds.

  • Patent number: 5738045
Abstract: A swine restraint device includes a V-shaped trough having angular blocks defining a centrally disposed, longitudinally extending channel. The angular blocks provide wedge means for supporting a swine within the trough, and at least a portion of the channel defines a bottom opening through which the feet of the swine extend when the trough is elevated relative to a stationary supporting surface. At least one yoke-shaped self-adjusting back restraint cooperates with the trough to restrain a swine in a predetermined position within the trough when the trough is elevated relative to the supporting surface. A pair of opposed shoulder stops mounted in a forward position within the trough further restrain forward motion and immobilize swine within the trough. The animal restraint device is designed efficiently to humanely and temporarily immobilize animals, particularly swine, for many purposes including weighing, veterinary exams and procedures, medication, implantation, and euthanasia.

Abstract: Handling apparatus having a rectangular compartment for carrying and enclosing a calf. A support rod is fixed to the bottom of the compartment and extends forward for insertion is a sleeve attached to a pick up truck for carrying the compartment at the rear of the pick up truck spaced above the ground. The compartment has an opening along one side with a pivotally mounted ramp mounted in the opening, which may be pivoted downward to the ground to serve as a loading ramp for loading the calf into the compartment. The compartment has a head gate at its other end for holding the head of the calf while in the compartment for tagging the calf. The compartment has an opening along its rear side with a screen door pivotally mounted along the opening for viewing the calf while in the compartment. The compartment has a cover with a heater in the cover for heating the compartment.

  • Patent number: 5603288
Abstract: An animal restraint having two similar halves, each half having an arcuate shaped cage portion and a flat elongated base for reversible attachment thereto. Each cage portion includes generally parabolically shaped ribs of differing heights wherein the shortest rib is located at a distal end of the cage and the tallest rib is located medially. Each rib is attached, respectively, at each of its ends, to a base frame. A pair of arcuate strengthening members is attached to the base frame and, in turn to each one of the parabolic ribs. The strengthening members of one half of the cage ends medially in a sleeve for receiving its corresponding strengthening member on the other cage half, thereby reversibly joining the two cage halves. A pair of rectangular plates are reversibly held adjacent one another to form the elongated base which, in turn, is reversibly attached to the joined cage portions.

  • Patent number: 5320069
Abstract: An improved small animal restraint device is provided which enables an inidual to conduct ocular examinations of a small animal. The device minimizes manipulation of the eyes of the animal and eliminates recovery time associated with anesthetics, while also reducing examination time. The restraint device comprises a cylinder having a longitudinal slot in the wall thereof. A conical member which is attached to one end of the cylinder includes a pair of eye openings in the upper wall thereof and a nose opening at the apex thereof. A plunger placed in the cylinder at the other end thereof assists in holding the animal in place. A set screw, which extends through the slot in the wall of the cylinder, secures the plunger in place.

  • Patent number: 5309866
Abstract: An animal treatment and handling device which is a flexible enclosure or case into which the animal can be placed. The animal is secured up to its neck by means of hook-and-loop type fastening strips located on either side of the front opening and which provide a quick closure. Only the head of the animal extends without the case. A second closing means adds strength and helps to seal the case so that it can be used for bathing or dipping the animal. The case has a reclosable slit along the top through which medication can be introduced or the animal can be treated. Means are provided to affix a carrying strap to the case for transporting the animal.

  • Patent number: 5282441
Abstract: A large animal handling chute designed to accommodate an elephant includes a fixed wall assembly and an opposing, movable wall assembly. The movable wall assembly is selectively movable toward and away from the fixed wall assembly upon movable supports traversing a pair of top and a pair of bottom support rails. The movable wall is independently pivotable at each of the movable supports. Four leg straps, two body straps, and a body support flap are provided to secure the elephant within the chute, and the entire chute including the confined elephant is rotatable about a pivot support to make the elephant's feet and legs accessible to a handler. A floor is hinged to the fixed wall assembly and can be hydraulically lowered to a horizontal position once the chute is rotated. The lowered floor thus provides a convenient work platform for an animal handler or veterinarian.
