  • Patent number: 8640307
Abstract: A hinge has a central element and a surrounding element. One of the central element and the surrounding element is formed by injection molding, and the other element is then formed on the priorly-formed element by injection molding such that a limit segment is mounted around the neck segment having a smallest outer width of the central element, which keeps the surrounding element from departing from the central element, and further simplifies a structure of the hinge. Because a melting point of the element formed priorly is higher than a melting point of the element formed later, the element formed later does not attach to the element formed priorly, and the two elements are relatively rotatable. Finally, because the manufacture of the hinge is accomplished after injection molding twice, the process of manufacturing the hinge is more convenient, faster and lowers the cost.

  • Patent number: 7958599
Abstract: A friction hinge includes a socket made up of a compressible elastomer insert sleeve inside a relatively rigid cup substrate. The insert sleeve defines an opening with a lip around the opening, and a relatively rigid ball or other center portion can be snap assembled through the lip and opening to center itself in the socket. A mount portion extends through the opening off the ball/center portion, and hand pressure on the mount portion can adjust the angular position of the joint. The size of the ball/center portion relative to the size of the cup substrate causes dimensional compression of the insert sleeve, such as about 15% of its thickness. The compression of the insert sleeve creates a controlled friction force on the ball/center portion, so the snap assembly friction hinge works consistently over a long time and over wide temperature ranges.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method of manufacturing a ceramic hinge to connect two ceramic bodies, comprising the steps of: shaping a separation insert in the form of a hinge, introducing the separation insert into a ceramic body, thereby separating the ceramic body into a first part and a second part; and heating the ceramic body and the separation insert of the ceramic body up to the sintering temperature of the ceramic body. The separation insert creates either a cavity in the case of a combustible insert or a soft pad in the case of a ceramic fiber based insert within the ceramic body. This cavity or soft pad allows a hinge or rotary movement between the first part and the second part of the ceramic body. The first part and the second part of the ceramic body can therefore freely rotate or hinge around one another.

Abstract: A stabilizing mechanism for a two part foldable hinged device having a cover and a base is disclosed and includes at least one elastic member having one end attached to the cover and a second opposite end attached to the base. The elastic member has a bending section defined between the ends which extends to increase the contact surface area of the base as the cover pivots open with respect to the base to keep the device from tipping over when the device is placed on a resting surface. The bending section is formed between two spaced apart knuckles whereby the elastic member bends with a controlled variable displacement to provide a greater rate of available contact surface as the cover and base pivot relative to one another, particularly between 90° and 180°. A portion of the second opposite end of the elastic member may extend beyond the downwardly facing surface of the base to make contact with the resting surface to prevent the device from sliding on the surface.

Abstract: A hinge for an airbag flap in a motor vehicle. The hinge is formed of a knitted fabric which is connected in a form-fitting manner both to the airbag flap and to regions surrounding the airbag flap. The knitted fabric has a plurality of inlaid or standing yarns arranged at an angle of at least 15° in relation to the longitudinal extension of the hinge-side edge of the airbag flap. Furthermore, a method for manufacturing the hinge is provided where the knitted fabric is arranged in relation to the airbag flap and also the regions surrounding the airbag flap in such a manner that the inlaid or standing yarns are arranged at an angle of at least 15° in relation to the longitudinal extension of the hinge-side edge of the airbag flap. The knitted fabric and at least parts of both the airbag flap and the regions surrounding the airbag flap are sheathed with plastic material so as to form a form-fitting connection.

Abstract: A method of making a hinge has the steps of forming a region of a piece of sheet metal with a groove and then bending the piece of sheet metal to form the region into an eye with the groove opening inwardly into the eye so that the piece of sheet metal with the eye forms a first leaf. A pivot pin with a radially outwardly projecting thickened region is fitted and pressed into the eye such that the radially thickened region radially elastically widens the eye. Once the thickened region reaches the groove, the eye springs back so that the pivot pin is then captured held in the eye.

Abstract: A hinged glider mechanism includes a hinge device for pivoted mounting in a chair between a stationary base frame and a seat frame, for supporting the seat frame for oscillatory gliding motion generally longitudinally relative to the base frame. The hinge device is configured for repeated substantially silent pivotal oscillating cycles over an extended life. The hinge device includes a hinge panel consisting essentially of a polymeric material, such as acetal copolymer, that is characterized by a sufficient strength and durability to support the seat frame and a seat occupant during repeated and extended pivotal oscillating cycles without failure and a sufficient lubricity not to generate noise during the repeated and extended pivotal oscillating cycles.

Abstract: A conductive hinge is made of a superelastic shape memory alloy such as nitinol (NiTi) having a large elastic strain limit for enabling the hinge to bend to a small radius during stowage and flexible return to a trained rigid hinge position by training the shape memory alloy to assume a predetermined deployed configuration when released from a stowage configuration. The hinge is trained by forging at a temperature above a training temperature. The hinge is stowed and released in the superelastic state to deploy solar cell panels as the hinges unfold to the trained deployed configuration.

  • Patent number: 6671928
Abstract: A hinge assembly includes a base-side support member and a monitor-side bracket set being pivotally connected to each other at two pivot shafts on the base-side support member. Elastic washers and anti-skidding washers are sequentially put around the pivot shafts with a separate washer of a predetermined thickness disposed between any two adjacent components of the hinge assembly on the pivot shafts. The separate washer is made of a highly pressure-resistant and wear-resistant material, such as high-molecular polymers, including, for example, Teflon, nylon, ABS resin, PC, PW, Bakelite, or other materials having similar properties. When nuts are tightened against the pivot shafts to firmly lock the components on the pivot shafts together with a selected torque, the separate washers separate and prevent such components from direct and frictional contact with one another.

  • Patent number: 6385815
Abstract: In a frictional hinge device a support block 20 is molded in a synthetic resin around the metallic shaft 10 so that the support block 20 is rotatably supported by the metallic shaft 10. The support block 20 is held at any angles by a surface friction resistance between the support block 20 and the metallic shaft 10. The synthetic resin has a modulus of bending elasticity, a changing rate of which is up to 30% at an operating temperature ranging from −20 to 80° C. The support block 20 tightly engages with the metallic shaft 10 due to a residual stress appeared between the support block 20 and the metallic shaft 10 when cooling the synthetic resin to shrink. Due to the smaller changing rate of the modulus of bending elasticity, the surface friction resistance becomes stable between the support block 20 and the metallic shaft 10 under normal ambient temperature with the least amount of friction.

This eliminates variations on a frictional torque with no substantial stickslip phenomenon, abnormal noise and initial scratches accompanied when pivotally moving the support block 20 relative to the metallic shaft 10 so as to maintain a stable surface friction resistance with good endurance for a long period of time.
