  • Patent number: 6357571
Abstract: A hydraulic device to limit slip can be used in the vehicle's main differential and the vehicle's inter-axle differential. The device includes a cylinder body connected to an input shaft, pistons disposed within radial cylinder bores in the cylinder body, and a cam ring connected to the output shaft, and disposed adjacent the pistons. The cylinder body is generally ring-shaped and has at least one pair of cylinder bores connected by an orifice spaced radially around the cylinder body interior bore. One of the radial cylinder bores in the pair is filled with hydraulic fluid. One piston protrudes from its corresponding radial cylinder bore. The cam ring is also generally ring-shaped having one lobe around its outer circumference per radial cylinder bore pair. As the cylinder body rotates along with the input shaft, the pistons interact with the cam ring lobes. The lobe forces the protruding piston into its corresponding radial cylinder bore.

  • Patent number: 6308124
Abstract: A system is disclosed for determining an effective throttle value of an internal combustion engine for controlling automatic transmission shift points. In one embodiment, the system is operable to determine an effective throttle value as a function of commanded fueling and engine speed under operating conditions wherein engine torque is requested by a system/component other than manual throttle control to thereby provide a throttle value indicative of what throttle position or percentage would be under present operating conditions if engine torque was being requested via manual throttle control. The present invention accordingly overcomes deficiencies in known automatic transmission shift point control systems by continuously computing an equivalent throttle percentage whenever fueling or requested torque values are not dominated by actual throttle (e.g. accelerator pedal) percentage.

  • Patent number: 5988344
Abstract: Rotation of transmission shafts as typically provided by the clutch brake is instead provided by increasing the load on the transmission shafts. In one embodiment, this is achieved by restricting flow through the supply line between the shaft driven pump and the oil cooler. By restricting this flow, the load on the pump increases, and the torque required to drive the pump increases. This, in turn, retards rotation of the transmission shafts to achieve the function typically provided by the clutch brake of stopping rotation. The present invention thus provides the function without the requirement of a clutch brake. The present invention is much more easily serviced or replaced than a clutch brake, and includes only elements which are accessible from outside of the transmission, and thus may be easily serviced or replaced.
