  • Patent number: 10490785
Abstract: Rechargeable lithium batteries can store a high amount of energy per unit of volume. The batteries, common in electric vehicles, can become heated and exhibit thermal runaway, affecting adjacent batteries and causing fires. Containment of lithium batteries to prevent the spread of fire is effected by a battery box or container coated with a heat-activated intumescent material. This can be in the form of a coating on one or more walls of the battery containment apparatus on a vehicle or in a shipping container; for storage and shipment of batteries the containment can be via an inner box enveloped by an outer box, with the heat-activated intumescent material filling the space between the boxes.

  • Patent number: 8297460
Abstract: The vapor barrier for flammable liquid storage tanks provides a gas impermeable layer for covering the surface of a flammable liquid stored within a conventional flammable liquid storage tank, a tanker, a vessel or the like. The vapor barrier is formed from a plurality of spherical buoyant members. Each spherical buoyant member has a heat-resistant core or shell, a heat-reactive intumescent or flame retardant layer formed on an outer surface of the heat-resistant core, and an antistatic and oil-phobic layer formed on an outer surface of the heat-reactive intumescent layer. The vapor barrier may further be used with liquid storage tanks in which separation between the liquid and vapor phases is beneficial to prevent oxidation or other undesirable reactions.

  • Patent number: 8240502
Abstract: A method for providing a fuel tank assembly is provided with the fuel tank assembly configured to limit the damage otherwise occasioned by the impact of a ballistic projectile. The fuel tank assembly may include a bladder defined between exterior and interior bladder walls, with the interior bladder wall defining a volume for storing fuel. The exterior bladder wall is at least as rigid than the interior bladder wall. The fuel tank assembly can also include connectors between the exterior and interior bladder walls to at least partially limit expansion of the bladder. The fuel tank assembly can also include an inlet opening into the bladder to permit a pressurized gas to be introduced into the bladder. The fuel tank assembly may also include a valve through the interior bladder wall into the volume for storing fuel to permit at least some of the pressurized gas to be introduced therein.

  • Publication number: 20120111869
Abstract: A flame resistant packaging system has an outer box and a flame and heat resistant liner inside the box. The liner is constructed of a layer of a ceramic fiber and a layer of metal foil. The edges of the liner are joined at a seam, forming a compartment for holding an article to be packaged. The foil layer of the liner faces the inside of the compartment. A patch, similarly constructed of foil and ceramic fiber, is attached over the seam to prevent hot gasses from entering the compartment at the seam. The compartment is substantially closed by folding the sides of the liner inward. End inserts, similarly constructed of foil and ceramic fiber, are inserted into the compartment to substantially cover the areas where the liner is folded to close the compartment.
