Abstract: Inherently low orientation sheet is produced by extruding a thermoplastic material in its melt phase onto the surface of a chill roller and thereafter solidifying the sheet at a relatively slow chill rate. Importantly, the just extruded thermoplastic polymeric sheet (i.e., the melt) is urged into continuous surface-to-surface contact with the chill roll by a curtain of air impinging upon the sheet at a velocity sufficient to ensure such continuous surface-to-surface contact between the sheet and the chill roll, but insufficient to impart substantial stress to the sheet. In such a manner, therefore, the resulting sheet will exhibit a low inherent internal stress level as evidenced by an unusually low shrink rate (ASTM D-1204) of less than about 18%.

  • Patent number: 5484077
Abstract: An improved system for sticking a frame with an integral lid to a flexible bag and to a rigid external container into which the bag is inserted. The improved system includes a frame having a flange and a peripheral groove. The flange has a lower surface and the lower surface has a surface-finish which has channels formed therein to promote the distribution of an adhesive. Also included is a bag having a flat upper surface and an external container having an upper edge. The upper edge has a finish of reliefs and hollows. There is an adhesive between the upper edge of the external container the peripheral groove in the frame and between the lower surface of the flange and the upper surface of the bag. The lower surface of the flange has an increased surface area due to the channels in order to increase sticking action between the bag and the flange. The reliefs and hollows of the upper edge of the external container increase sticking action between the frame and the external container.

  • Patent number: 5226586
Abstract: 1. Container, especially drinking cup, and process for producing it. 2.1. Drinking cups (20) in particular often have a cup body (21) made of plastic foam. The upper rim (25) of such drinking cups (20) makes drinking more difficult. 2.2. The drinking cup (20) according to the invention possesses a collar (26) attached onto the upper rim (25) of the cup body (21) and made of a compact plastic. This provides a mouth roll which makes drinking easier and which gives the drinking cup (20) according to the invention the properties of drinking cups formed completely from more extensive compact materials. 3. The invention relates, above all, to rotationally symmetrical drinking cups (20) which are used for the dispensing of drinks from automatic machines or as inserts for reusable drinking-cup holders.

Abstract: A corrosion resistent protective plastic overlay is intimately engaged with the chime of a fibre drum and extends from an inner edge portion thermally bonded to the drum lining over the head and into the exterior chime groove. The overlay is fusion bonded to the chime throughout the full extent of the surface-to-surface engagement therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5119960
Abstract: A device for maintaining the mouth of a bag in an open condition includes an annular body member which defines a central cavity sized and configured to accept a region of the bag's mouth therein (preferably in friction fit relationship). The body member is formed of a resilient, shape-retaining material (e.g., plastic) so as to radially outwardly bias the bag mouth to maintain the same in an open condition. A pair of manually operable wing members diverge from the body member relative to the respective sides of the defined cavity. The wing members collectively cause the cavity to dimensionally increase in response to a manual inward pressure being applied thereagainst so as to facilitate engagement/removal of the body member with the bag mouth.

  • Patent number: 5091231
Abstract: A retortable container has a wall of at least two co-formed laminas. This wall is highly impermeable to fluids selected from the group consisting of oxygen and aromatic vapors. The wall includes a first load-carrying lamina of a first plastic material. This load-carrying lamina has been formed without mechanical hysteresis in the melt phase by a thermal pressure forming apparatus to cause strengthening with orientation of the load-carrying lamina in at least one axis but without memory of its pre-melt phase shape. The wall also includes a second sealing lamina of a second plastic material. This second sealing lamina is coextensive with the first load-carrying lamina. Consequently, the container formed by the apparatus is retortable, i.e. it can withstand temperatures and pressures of a retort chamber without undergoing significant and permanent distortion.
