    Abstract: A plastic carrier for carrying a plurality of containers, such as cans, bottles and the like, includes a novel structure which maintains a straight grip portion when containers are applied thereto. The carrier includes container engaging portions which are joined to a handle portion by a welded seam. Each container engaging portion includes bands which define apertures therein for holding the containers therein. The handle portion extends generally perpendicular to the container engaging portions when the carrier is applied to the containers. The apertures within each container engaging portion include an inner aperture and a pair of end apertures therein. Each inner and outer aperture is defined by a length measured parallel with the welded seam wherein each inner aperture is substantially shorter than each end aperture.

    Abstract: A radiation-shielding storage/transport container has a cast-iron vessel having an open end defining an end face, a steel ring engaging the end face and forming at least one annular seat, a weld unitarily bonding the ring to the end face, and a cover secured to the steel ring in the seat thereof. The cast-iron vessel is formed at its open end with an annular seat having a shoulder surface forming the end face. The weld is an aluminothermic weld that extends over the entire surface of the interface between the ring and the vessel. The ring is formed with two such seats and the cover includes an inner plug cover and an outer cover each in a respective one of the seats. The outer cover is of steel and a second peripheral weld connects the outer cover to the respective seat.

    Abstract: A weldment, such as the wall of a pressure vessel, is formed from segments, each of which includes a steel substrate, a protective layer of tantalum which is exposed to the interior of the vessel and an intervening layer of copper which lies between and is bonded to the substrate and the protective layer. The substrate and the two layers which form the cladding are explosively bonded together and the bonding procedure may leave the protective layer with small domes or embossments and pockets of trapped gas behind the embossments. The two segments are welded together edge-to-edge at their substrates, with their protective and intervening layers aligned. If one were to follow the traditional procedure, one would place a tantalum batten strip over the protective layers along the opposed edges so as to cover the edges, and then weld the batten strip to the protective layer along the edges of the strip.

Contrary to the known connection the invention provides the endwall with an axially extending edge, which may form part of a gripping edge and which overlaps the weld, so that the weld beads are hidden, while further the area of transition between the endwall and its edge above the weld has an axial thickness which is in essence the same as the thickness of the endwall and the radial thickness of the axially extending edge of the endwall, so that the material flow of the plastic during molding of the endwall is more even.

A notch in each inner post member adjacent the lower stacking engagement fitting exposes an inner surface of the reinforcement plate to permit the insertion of a weld joining the reinforcement plate inner surface to the engagement fitting. An angle member is received within the notch and extends onto the engagement fitting.

    Abstract: A means and method of constructing electronic housing modules in sections and joining the sections together in modular fashion. A coupler for joining the sections of the module housing can be constructed in a variety of ways allowing the module to take on various housing configurations. For instance, the module can be constructed as a rectangular or triangular box using the coupler. The coupler is preferably comprised of a longitudinal member including at least one groove. Each groove comprises an upper and lower extending lip. To construct the housing module, the sections, or housing walls, of the module are inserted into the groove between the upper and lower lips. The lower lip acts as a support for the inserted housing wall. The upper lip includes a flared portion at the extending end of the upper lip. A ledge secured to and protruding from the bottom plane of the upper lip. The ledge is located close to the inner portion of the groove.

    Abstract: A hermetically sealed housing for a solid state device or the like includes a metal header having a mounting surface and a metal cap mounted on the header and over the mounting surface. The cap includes a cup-shaped portion and a flange extending radially outwardly from the rim of the cup-shaped portion. A weld ring projects from a surface of the flange toward the header mounting surface and is welded to the mounting surface. A second ring projects from the surface of the flange and is spaced radially inwardly from the weld ring. The second ring is shorter than the weld ring so that it preferably just contacts the mounting surface of the header. The second ring captures any metal particles splashed from the weld ring during the welding of the cap to the header and thereby minimizes particle induced noise.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a vessel for receiving suspensions containing sos such as radioactive liquids. The vessel includes a bottom wall inclined towards an outlet opening formed therein and a spraying arrangement in the vicinity of the inner walls. In order to reliably discharge solid deposits on the bottom of the vessel while using a minimum of flushing liquid, the bottom of the vessel is provided with a channel extending in the direction toward the outlet opening. A flushing tube pointing into the channel is provided at the highest elevation thereof. The solid/liquid mixture is flushed out of the vessel with great effectiveness by means of a directed delivery of the flushing liquid into the channel.

    Abstract: A process for manufacturing the butt-welded cans comprises the steps of applying a 0.5 to 3.5 .mu.m thick organic resin film for preventing the adhesion of melted metal particles to at least a 1-mm-wide region from the butt-weld portion edge of at least the inner surface of a steel plate can blank, and butt-welding the edges of the can blank by the use of a laser, or alternatively applying a 0.5 to 7.0.mu.m thick organic resin film, butting the edges of the can blank, and laser-welding the butted edges while a cooling device is brought into contact with the butted edges from the inner side of each can. In this case, it is preferred that the coating material having high thermal decomposition resistance is applied to the whole outer surface of each can, and the weld portion is then butt-welded by means of a CO.sub.2 laser.

    Abstract: The invention is directed to a container for receiving and safely storing radioactive or other materials damaging to living organisms, especially such materials as vitrified radioactive fission products or irradiated nuclear reactor fuel elements. The container includes a vessel and a sealing cover. The vessel has a circular opening at one of its ends for receiving the materials to be stored therein, and a sealing cover is seated in this opening to tightly seal the container. In order to obtain a container of the kind which has the required high impermeability to gas, the open end of the inner bore of the vessel is widened to define a conical surface. A sealing cover is pressed into the vessel at this conical surfce. The sealing cover has a peripheral surface which converges toward the interior of the vessel and which has a taper corresponding to that of the conical surface of the vessel.

The edge of said other member at the extension is welded directly to the extension, rather than to its edge. A rib can be formed integrally with the extension to reinforce it.

    Abstract: A crucible for containing molten magnesium, and a process for forming the crucible. The crucible is formed from ferritic stainless steel, and particularly type 444 stainless steel plate. The method involves forming ferritic stainless steel plate into component parts of the crucible, while maintaining the ferritic stainless steel plate at temperatures above about 200.degree. F. but below the "blue brittle" temperature range. Further, the method involves special techniques for welding the crucible parts. Specifically, the crucible parts are preheated to a temperature of 100.degree.-150.degree. C. and are completely welded by a process utilizing multiple welding passes with a special metal inert gas shielded welding technique before any cool down of the crucible parts below 100.degree. C. is allowed. The welds extend completely through the crucible walls, which are the thickness of steel plate, and completely incorporate the crucible parts while being essentially free of cracks.

The container interior is sealed from the outside by an additional seal in the form of a cover for the opening, which cover is welded to the container under vacuum. The cover borders on the outer face of the container in such a manner that the cover is welded to the container under vacuum along a line which extends at such a distance from the first seal that the sealing effect of the first seal is not adversely influenced.
