Abstract: A directionally-controlled roll-out elastically deployable solar array structure is disclosed. The structure includes one or more longitudinal elastic roll out booms that may be closed section or open section to allow for efficient rolled packaging onto a lateral mandrel. A flexible photovoltaic blanket is attached to a tip structure and to a lateral base support structure, but remains uncoupled from the longitudinal booms. The solar array system may be stowed simultaneously into a rolled package comprised of the roll out booms and the flexible planar blanket together, or onto independent rolls. Alternatively, the system may be stowed by rolling the booms, and accordion Z-folding the hinged flexible photovoltaic blanket into a flat stack. Structural deployment is motivated by the elastic strain energy of the roll out booms, and several methods of deployment direction control are provided to ensure a known, controlled, and unidirectional deployment path of the elastically unrolling booms.

The bobbin holder includes an elongate tubular body for receiving one or more hollow bobbins of thread on the outside thereof along the axial length thereof, mechanisms for varying the length of the elongate body for accommodating bobbins of varying heights, and a radially-outwardly-projecting support carried on the lower end of the tubular body for supporting the bobbin or bobbins of thread on the tubular body. The elongate body preferably comprises at least two tubular portions connected together at respective ends thereof by the length varying mechanisms.

  • Patent number: 4694868
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a disc-shaped curved magnet coil, particularly for a system for accelerating and/or storing electrically charged particles such as electrons. The conductors of the coil to be made are to be arranged around a winding core having a convex outside and a concave inside and are then to be fixed in position around the winding core. A coil form or fitting piece of predetermined shape is first added to a winding core, so that a provisional winding body with only positive radii of curvature on its outsides is formed. The conductors are wound under tension around the winding body and subsequently are fastened only to the winding core of the winding body and, after the coil form is removed, the thus exposed conductor portions facing the region of the concave inside of the winding core are pressed against this inside and fixed in position.

Abstract: A hand manipulated tube which can be axially stacked and is able to sustain bobbins that can be stacked, one against another, at least for doubling and twisting operations comprising an outside section which is at least partially elastic radially and disposed circumferentially, and which bears protrusions positioned lengthwise in respect of an end face of a portion of the tube, and which extend radially outwards, an inner circumferential seat in the portion of the tube positioned in respect of the other end of the tube whereby the partially radially elastic side cooperates with the inner circumferential seat for the positioning of two axially stacked tubes, axial guides within the tube and possibly a radially guiding and tensioning element between one tube and another.

  • Patent number: 4432502
Abstract: Bobbin apparatus for releasing a connecting filament between a radiosonde and the sonde balloon in a controlled manner during the ascent thereof includes a longitudinally extending member adapted to be affixed to the balloon around which the filament is wound and having a transverse dimension which increases in the longitudinal direction from a narrow upper end to a wide lower end thereof. The filament will unwind from the bobbin member during ascent of the balloon causing the bobbin member to periodically oscillate in a manner such that the filament will unwind without fouling and at an appropriate rate.

  • Patent number: 4274606
Abstract: An improved winch is disclosed which possesses means for increasing the coefficient of friction on the surface of the spool only in an area substantially at the intersection of the drum and flange sections of the winch so that only the last turn of rope or line around the winch would contact the area of increased friction. Friction in this area can be increased by placing a rubber ring over a conventional winch which makes it self-tailing. As a further embodiment, the winch possesses a surface which is recessed, said recess containing radial projection elements for the support of friction increasing sections contained between said radial projection elements within the recess.

  • Patent number: 4123832
Abstract: A woven structure comprising at least a continuous band around an internal axis, suitable for impregnation with resin or for internal deposition of graphite from a reactive vapor, comprises axial threads, circumferential threads, and radial threads. The device employed to produce the structure comprises principally a series of flat rings or disks, aligned and slightly spaced from each other axially, having small apertures located around their circumference or one or more helical worms, with central openings, whose successive turns are similarly provided with apertures. Radial threads are passed through homologous apertures in successive disks, or successive turns of the helical worm, and are then drawn toward the central axis by wrapping of circumferential threads around them in the axial space between adjacent disks. Axial threads are then passed between the radial threads, and are drawn by further wraps of circumferential threads.
