  • Patent number: 11774004
Abstract: A valve configured to control a flow of a process fluid includes a pair of packing seals separated by a seal gap space along a linear valve stem of the valve, and a pressurization port that can be used to apply a pressurizing fluid, such as nitrogen gas, to the seal gap at a gap pressure that is higher than the process fluid pressure, thereby ensuring that any leakage past the packing seals will be of pressurizing fluid into the process fluid and/or into the environment, and that no process fluid will escape into the environment. The pressure or flow rate of the pressurizing fluid can be monitored to detect and quantify any pressurization fluid leakage past either of the packing seals, so that a maintenance action can be applied to the valve, such as re-tightening or replacing at least one of the packing seals, or replacing the valve.

  • Patent number: 7354046
Abstract: Advantageous seal systems are provided that include a barrier member movable relative to a shaft to allow sequential engagement of resilient seal members, e.g., lip seals, with the shaft. Movement of the barrier member may be effected manually or through introduction of pressurized fluid to effect piston-like movement. The disclosed seal assemblies may include an automatic leak detector and may utilize such leak detection to effectuate automatic movement of the barrier member. The barrier member may be moved relative to the shaft while the shaft is in movement, e.g., rotating or reciprocating, thereby permitting seal maintenance without interruption in operation. As seal members are sequentially brought into sealing engagement with the shaft, the previously engaged seal members contribute to the sealing performance of the seal assembly, although no longer effective to establish a stand-alone seal with the shaft. Front and rear bushings may be provided within the seal system.

  • Patent number: 7237778
Abstract: The invention is a shut-off seal assembly for use with the drive assembly of fluid-containing vessels. The shut-off seal assembly first locks the seal carrier of the drive assembly in place so that it may not rotate in a clockwise or a counter-clockwise direction. The seal carrier includes a pair of notches into which a pawl may be fitted preventing seal carrier rotation. The seal carrier surrounds a sleeve which includes a plurality of slots. A backwards rotation of the drive shaft causes drive pins to slide in the angled slots, thereby causing the seal element to move forward and create a seal between the drive assembly and the vessel.

  • Patent number: 6782592
Abstract: A system for pressure molding plastic material includes a source of hot flowable plastic material and a manifold for receiving hot flowable plastic material from the source and for transporting the hot flowable plastic material to a nozzle that is disposed within a nozzle cavity. A heater is provided to heat the nozzle and is positioned outside of, but close to, the nozzle cavity and includes at least one electrical supply wire. A shut-off seal is positioned within the nozzle cavity to seal the nozzle with respect to the wall defining the shut-off cavity. In addition, a secondary seal is most advantageously positioned between the shut-off seal and the heater for ensuring that any hot flowable plastic material that might leak through the shut-off seal does not come into contact with the electrical supply wire. This has been found to increase the reliability and operating life of conventional pressure molding systems.

  • Patent number: 6202668
Abstract: A valve with fire-resistant seal for use in industrial piping applications. The valve includes a valve body with a valve element therein. The valve is illustrated as a ball valve, but other valve configurations could also be used. A valve stem engages the valve element so that it can be rotated between open and closed positions. A conventional primary seal is used on the valve stem for normal conditions. The valve body defines a body bearing surface, and the valve stem defines a facing stem bearing surface. A thrust bearing is disposed between the body and stem bearing surfaces, and a fire-resistant seal is positioned radially inwardly from the thrust bearing. Initially, the fire-resistant seal is not engaged with at least one of the body or stem bearing surfaces, and the fire-resistant seal has a thickness less than an initial thickness of the thrust bearing.

  • Patent number: 5913523
Abstract: A method and device for repairing a leak between a channel member through which an axle passes and a cover member of a vehicular transmission or otherwise between inner and outer members. The diameter of the opening in the cover member for the axle is greater than the diameter of the channel through the channel member thereby providing a surface portion of the channel member which is uncovered by the cover member. A plate is installed to sealingly bear against both the cover member and the uncovered surface of the channel member, with sealing material disposed between the bearing surfaces. The plate, which has an aperture for also receiving the axle, has a first surface for sealingly bearing against the uncovered surface of the channel member. This first surface is raised (axially inwardly from) from a second surface which sealingly bears against the cover member. In order to eliminate the necessity otherwise of removing the axle, the plate is alternatively a split plate.
