Abstract: It is an object to provide a display device in which a problem of light leakage from a liquid crystal element in black display is reduced or overcome and the contrast is improved. It is another object to provide a pixel circuit having a function to control a lighting state of a backlight based on each pixel. These objects are achieved by turning off a light-emitting element in display of a black gray scale, and by providing a light-emitting element in each pixel and providing, in a pixel circuit, a function to individually control lighting and non-lighting of the light-emitting element depending on a gray scale to perform display. When a backlight is provided in each pixel, a light-emitting element that is a backlight is turned off when a black gray scale is displayed, whereby reduction in contrast due to light leakage from a liquid crystal element can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 7259755
Abstract: A method and apparatus for driving a liquid crystal panel in a line-inversion system is disclosed. In the method, at least one pixel block each of which includes at least two data lines within the liquid crystal panel is set. The adjacent pixels in a gate line direction within the pixel block respond to data signals having the same polarity. The pixels within the other pixel areas except for the pixel block respond to data signals having a polarity contrary to the adjacent pixels at the left and right sides thereof. Accordingly, a current amount charged in the adjacent pixels having a large brightness difference is supplied always equally, so that the brightness difference between the adjacent pixels can be reduced to eliminate a noise pattern in the vertical direction.

  • Patent number: 7227581
Abstract: Plasma Display Panels (PDP) are becoming more and more interesting for TV technology. Due to the larger size of PDPs, with larger viewing angle the large area flicker effect will become more serious in the future, in particular when handling 50 Hz video standards. This invention proposes a different sub-field organisation, with different coding, which reduces large area flicker artefact, and which is characterised by: 1. Grouping of sub-fields (SF) in 2 sub-field groups (G1, G2), of similar structure. 2. Adjusting the starting times of the two sub-field groups to a time raster corresponding to a doubling of the frame repetition rate by adding a first blanking period of a first dedicated length behind the last sub-field of the first sub-field group and a second blanking period of a second dedicated length behind the last sub-field of the second sub-field group.

  • Patent number: 7133009
Abstract: The present invention provides a multiplexed matrix alternating current electroluminescent display, comprising an array of matrix addressed capacitively switchable electroluminescent pixels, with each capacitively switchable electroluminescent pixel including an electroluminescent pixel and a circuit element connected in electrical series with the electroluminescent pixel. The circuit element is switchable between an electrically insulating capacitive state and an electrically conducting state depending upon a voltage applied across the capacitively switchable electroluminescent pixel. The matrix multiplexed electroluminescent (EL) display with the low capacitance switching device in electrical series with the electroluminescent pixels reduces column displacement currents, thereby reducing power consumption. Refresh times can also be reduced so that the size and resolution of passive matrix electroluminescent displays can be increased.

Abstract: A projection device comprises a matrix (1) of semiconductor lasers, an optical system (2) for projecting the matrix (1) on an element (3) illuminated by the projection device, and a control device (9) for controlling the semiconductor lasers through a feedback device. The feedback device comprises a first detector (13, 14) that generates a first signal representing the detected intensity. The semiconductor lasers are controlled and the intensity of the light spot is adjusted to a desired value by the feedback device. Light from a semiconductor laser is detected by a second detector (18), and a value of the detected signal is stored in an addressable memory cell. The amount of emitted light is stabilized for each semiconductor laser by detection through the second detector (18) and comparison with the value stored in the memory (29) for the relevant controlled semiconductor laser.
