  • Patent number: 8702359
Abstract: A method of forming a recess in a work, a work in which the recess is to be formed is a material that can be cut. A cutting tool for forming the recess is held by a moving apparatus at a prescribed angle relative to the work. The cutting tool is moved in a carving direction for carving the work at the prescribed angle, and a thin cutting fin is vertically formed. Then, the cutting tool is moved in the horizontal direction, and the cutting fin is cut and separated from the work. The fin-forming step and the cutting step are repeatedly performed in sequence, whereby a recess having a prescribed depth d and area is formed in the work.

  • Patent number: 7695224
Abstract: Methods of producing a pipe include curling a skelp into a cylindrical shape by bringing laterally opposed edges of the skelp together to form a seam, butt welding the seam to define the pipe downstream of the skelp, thereby leaving a radially inwardly extending weld bead. The weld bead is deburred off the pipe according to a depth of cut of a cutting tool. The depth of cut may be adjusted during deburring, and/or rotation of the cutting tool may be adjusted during deburring. The methods may be carried out using one or both of an adjustment device carried by a housing to pivot an adjustment member for adjustment of an upstream guide to adjust a depth of cut of the cutting tool into the weld bead, or an adjustment device carried by the housing and coupled to the cutting tool to rotate the cutting tool during deburring.

  • Patent number: 5383275
Abstract: A hand planer comprises a housing, a planer head supported in the housing, a motor driving the planer head, a fan blower connected with the motor for generating a flow of air for moving chips, a chip ejector, two air guidance ducts through which the flow of air is guided from the fan blower to the chip ejector, a chip conveying duct having a chip discharge opening such that planed chips exit the chip conveying duct through the chip discharge opening, the chip ejector accommodating both the chips and the flow of air, and guides for guiding the flow of air in a switchable manner to the chip conveying duct via one of the two air guidance ducts. Therefore the problem of ejecting the chips in a preselected direction with extreme precision and high efficiency is met.

  • Patent number: 4825919
Abstract: A railroad tie adzer has a cutter head and means for rotating the cutter head to surface the tie plate area of a tie. A cutter guard extends peripherally about the path of rotation of the cutter head, and there is a vacuum duct opening into the cutter guard to remove debris during the adzing operation. A volute deflector is positioned within the cutter guard and extends partially about and outside of the path of movement of the cutter head. The volute deflector extends from adjacent the vacuum duct circumferentially in the direction of cutter head movement. There is an inclined ramp adjacent the entrance to the vacuum duct to direct debris from adzing, moving in a volute or spiral pattern, as defined by the deflector, into the vacuum duct. The vacuum duct is connected to a fan which in turn is connected to a separator from which the separated dust and debris are discharged away from the adzer.

  • Patent number: 4583895
Abstract: Rail heads are planed with a mobile machine moving continuously along a track and comprising a frame and a rail planing tool mounting linked to the frame. The mounting is adjusted vertically relative to the running surface of the rail head and pressed thereagainst, and guided along the rail head by a guide roller laterally guiding the mounting along a selected side of the rail head and two additional guide rollers vertically guiding the mounting along the running surface of the rail head. A tool head including a tool holder is mounted on the mounting for displacement relative thereto and a rail planing tool is replaceably mounted in the tool holder and detachably carries a cutting blade having a cutting edge for planing chips or shavings off the rail head by the forward thrust of the machine. A pick-up magnet removes the chips.

  • Patent number: 4443143
Abstract: A billet scalper including a die assembly with a scalping die, a pressing mechanism with a stem member in axial alignment with the scalping die for pressing a billet thereinto, and a chip ejector located around the circumference of the scalping die and movable axially back and forth beyond a free end face of the scalping die to remove chips therefrom. The die assembly including the scalping die is movable between a position at the center of the scalper and an outer receded position to permit easy maintenance and service of the die assembly including replacements and cleaning of scalping dies. In a preferred form, the scalper is constructed integrally with an extrusion press to perform the billet scalping operation in timed relation with the extruding operation to shorten the time of press cycle.
