Abstract: A locking device for a threaded fastener comprises a pair of washers each having a plurality of wedge cam sets that include a base-cam and a raised tooth-cam. When the washers are mated together in use, the wedge cam sets of each washer are placed into confronting engagement with those of the other washer, with the raised tooth-cams of each washer engaging the base-cams of the other washer. The base-cam surfaces are ramped so that, as the tooth-cams slide along them during relative rotational movement, the combined axial height of the two washers changes—decreasing during tightening and increasing during loosening so that unintended partial loosening of the fastener is offset by expansion of the washers to thereby maintain bolt tension. Raised shoulders at each end of the tooth-cams are used to inhibit the amount of relative rotational movement of the two washers in both directions.

  • Patent number: 6168161
Abstract: A shaft seal having spacers positioned between the packing follower and the body of a valve. The spacers are flat, hard members of a certain thickness which allow maximum tightening of the packing fasteners and determine the maximum pressure the packing follower exerts on the packing material. The spacers have a slot for accommodating the fasteners and a tab that can easily be grasped with a tool, such as pliers. A stack of spacers can be positioned between the packing follower and valve body and then sequentially removed to provide incremental tightening of the fasteners for maintaining pressure on the packing materials by the packing gland. The spacers may include integral locking tabs.

Abstract: A fastening device is provided with a radially contractible and expandable wedge-shaped collet (5) having a V-shaped section and a tapered outer circumference (5c), and supported on the opposite support surfaces (2c, 63b) of a fastening nut (2) and a fastening ring (63). A taper ring (60) is fitted on the collet (5). When fastening an object (T) to a spindle (1), an operating ring (67) is turned in a fastening direction to move the taper ring (60) axially so as to compress the collet (5) and, at the same time, the fastening nut (2) is screwed on an externally threaded part (1a) of the spindle (1). When removing the object (T) from the spindle (1), the operating ring (67), which can be easily turned, in an unfastening direction to remove a compressive force acting on the collet (5) by axially moving the taper ring (60) so that an axial fastening force is removed from the object (T). Then, the fastening nut (2) can be easily turned to remove the object (T) from the spindle (1).

  • Patent number: 6131346
Abstract: A clamping fitting to attach glass panes whereby the clamp screw's screw head and screw shank are conceived as individual components, so that the screw head is vertically displaceable in four degrees of freedom with regard to the screw shank's axis and fixable at a screw shank's holding flange in order to achieve tolerance compensation in the glass pane's plane between the wall mounting and the bore hole in the glass pane. Between a support flange sitting close to a carrier structure and a bore hole in the glass pane, a locating flange sitting close to the glass pane is provided for, which locating flange's distance is variable with regard to the support flange. The distance adjustment is realized by penetrating through the bore hole in the glass pane.

  • Patent number: 5921737
Abstract: A spacer for filling the gap between an electrical mounting bracket and an electrical mounting plate of an electrical junction box and thereby enabling the bracket to be securely screwed onto the plate is dimensioned to fit between the outer ends of the bracket and the plate. The spacer includes protruding members and receptacles which are located at corresponding end portions of opposite faces thereof and which enable a plurality of spacers to be positioned on one another in a face to face relationship with the protruding members fitting into the receptacles so as to form a solid stack. Selection of the number of spacers in the stack enables the thickness of the stack to be adjusted and thereby accomodate various widths of gaps between the outer ends of the bracket and the plate. The spacer also has a centrally located hole for the mounting screw.

  • Patent number: 5918707
Abstract: A tape correction plate and method of using the correction plate to correct for lateral runout of a disc brake rotor is described. The tapered correction plate is installed between the hub and brake rotor of an automobile such that the thinnest portion of the correction plate is aligned with the angular position on the hub and rotor corresponding to the maximum lateral runout. The mounting geometry of the correction plate may include any one of a number of configurations including circular openings, slotted openings having a smooth or gear-like perimeter, or an outer perimeter defining a gear like shape or open-ended "half slots." Each type of mounting geometry is suitable for mating with existing lug patterns while enabling adjustment of the angular orientation of the correction plate with respect to the hub and rotor. The correction plate may also consist of one washer or a number of washers with appropriately varying thicknesses that are arranged to correct runout.

  • Patent number: 5873678
Abstract: Vertical movement of a floating marine platform is reduced by tendons extending from the platform to anchors on the seabed. A final tension adjustment to equalize the load on all of the tendons is made by a respective tension adjustment mechanism incorporated into the top connector of each tendon. The tension adjustment mechanism includes a split load ring assembly having an upper ring and a lower ring. The upper ring and the lower ring abut each other at respective complementary surfaces. Each surface has a series of serrated ramps. A rotation of one ring with respect to the other causes the upper ring to climb over the lower ring to thereby increase the tension in the tendon. Rotation of the upper ring with respect to the lower ring, for example, is achieved by a motor driven gear ring.

  • Patent number: 5791847
Abstract: A plate-like washer of generally annular shape and a method of using the washer for pre-tensioning. The washer is adapted to be placed between a fastening element, used to attach two pieces to form a coupling, and a piece to be fastened. The washer is manufactured from a shape-memory metal whose upper transformation temperature is higher than the highest use and assembly temperature of the coupling. The thickness of the washer is adapted in view of the length and pre-tensioning need of the fastening element, as well as the expansion of the washer at the upper transformation temperature. The washer is actively heated to its upper transformation temperature and undergoes a phase transformation which expands the washer and pre-tensions the coupling to the desired degree.
