Abstract: A vane pump for an automatic transmission includes a housing which may be spaced from the axis of the transmission input shaft axis and driven by a chain or gear train driven by the torque converter hub or disposed on and about the axis of the transmission input shaft and driven at engine speed. The vane pump includes a pair of port plates which reside on the end faces of a pump body having a cylindrical chamber which receives an eccentrically disposed rotor that is coupled to a stub shaft in an off-axis arrangement. The rotor includes a plurality of radial slots which receive a like plurality of vanes. The outer ends or edges of the vanes are in contact with the wall of the cylindrical chamber and the inner ends or edges are in contact with a pair of vane rings received within recesses in the ends of the rotor. The vanes are thus constrained between the wall of the chamber and the vane rings which positively determine their radial positions as they and the rotor rotate.

Abstract: A scroll compressor including a housing having a compression mechanism and a motor disposed therein, rotatively coupled by a drive shaft. A crankcase is disposed in the housing and supports the compression mechanism. A brake element is operatively engaged with the crankcase with at least one roller located therebetween. The roller has a first position relative to the brake element and the crankcase when the compressor operated in a forward direction, in which forward motion of the orbiting scroll member is unimpeded. At the onset of reverse rotation, the roller has an assumed second position relative to one of the brake element and the crankcase, in which the roller is in binding engagement with the brake element and the crankcase to arrest reverse motion of the orbiting scroll member.

The device is a thin washer having a tab which is selectively driven against the housing stop when the compressor is driven in a forward direction, but is movable into a notch in the shaft when the shaft is driven in a reverse direction. The tab prevents rotation of the shaft when in the notch.

Abstract: A drive system is provided for coupling a clutch assembly with a pump assembly that provides fluid power to cool, lubricate and control the operation of the clutch. The drive system comprises a drive coupling rotatably supported on an input shaft by a plurality of bearing members. The bearing members permit the drive coupling to rotate independent of the rotation of the input shaft. The drive coupling is provided with at least two splined surfaces for engaging a corresponding splined surface on both the clutch assembly and the pump. The drive system counteracts radial loads generated within the pump and moment loads generated at the splined connections to prevent premature wear or damage to the pumping elements and mating components.

Abstract: A scroll compressor is provided with a clutch to minimize or eliminate the detrimental effects of reverse rotation. Generally, the clutch prevents rotation of the shaft during both powered and unpowered reverse rotation. The clutch could be subject to damage during powered reverse rotation, and thus a clutch protection mechanism is incorporated that will prevent the clutch from moving to an actuated position if powered reverse rotation occurs.

  • Patent number: 6375442
Abstract: A supercharger clutch system has a clutch housing (52) in which a clutch pack (84) is disposed to transmit torque from an input, such as a pulley (66), to one of the timing gears (58). The clutch pack (84) is disposed within a cage (92), having a spring seat member (98) adjacent thereto. A set of springs (104) biases the seat member and the clutch cage (92) to engage the clutch pack (84). On the opposite side, axially, of the clutch pack there is a piston (76) including a portion (80) surrounding the clutch cage (92) and engaging the seat member (98). The piston (76) and the clutch housing (52) define a pressure chamber (106) which, when pressurized, causes movement of the piston in a direction compressing the springs (104) and disengaging the clutch pack. With the invention, the clutch system can be operated by engine lubrication oil, while still achieving rapid engagements (short response time), wherein the rate of engagement can be modulated to suit vehicle operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 6354821
Abstract: A simplified drive arrangement is provided to allow a scroll compressor to be operated at two capacity levels by a reversible electric motor. A pair of one-way clutches are positioned on a pair of parallel shafts. When the motor is driven in a forward direction drive passes through one of the one-way clutches and directly to the orbiting scroll. However, when the motor is driven in a reverse direction, drive passes through a countershaft, which in turn passes through a second one-way clutch. The drive passing through the second one-way clutch will result in the orbiting scroll being driven at a distinct speed then when the motor is driven in a reverse direction. In this way, capacity modulation is achieved with a very simple mechanism.
