  • Patent number: 6530966
Abstract: Binder compositions for converting coal waste into fuel including a distillable petroleum hydrocarbon emulsified with a surfactant and water are provided. The invention also includes methods for making the binder compositions. The methods include blending a distillable petroleum hydrocarbon petroleum hydrocarbon with water and a surfactant. In another aspect, a fuel product is provided which includes the reaction product of carbonaceous fine particles and a binder composition of this invention. The binder composition is provided in an amount necessary to increase the hydrophobic characteristics of the carbonaceous fine particles and bring about a statistically significant change in their chemistry. In one embodiment the binder composition is present in an amount between about 1.5 percent and about 4.0 percent of the total weight. Methods are also provided for making fuel from fine carbonaceous materials, which include exposing the carbonaceous materials to a binder composition of this invention.

  • Patent number: 5364420
Abstract: A process for treating various species of wood or other similar combustible material by vacuum/pressure penetration and impregnation of the combustible material with a flammable substance in order to produce a fire starting or combustion catalyst material with bum characteristics substantially similar to naturally occurring resin enriched woods. The wood or other combustible to be treated is placed within the cylinder of a modified vacuum/pressure autoclave whereupon the air within the cylinder is substantially removed and the cylinder is then filled with a hot flammable liquid such as a liquid paraffin. The autoclave is then caused to be pressurized and the appropriate pressure is maintained within the autoclave cylinder for a sufficient time to insure the desired penetration and impregnation of the wood or other combustible with the flammable liquid.

  • Patent number: 5244472
Abstract: Wood chips, bark, sawdust and other cellulosic products containing unacceptably high quantities of water are dried and enriched in BTU content. The green or freshly cut wood product is immersed in hot oil to dry the wood. After water exits the wood pores as steam, some oil enters these interstices, impregnating the dried wood, thereby increasing its BTU content and improves its storing and burning characteristics. Chips and bark dried in and impregnated with used or waste oil, provide an environmentally acceptable means of disposing of and utilizing used or waste oils. Wood chips dried and impregnated with vegetable oil, provide a clean burning, non-toxic fuel for lighting or starting charcoal and wood.

  • Patent number: 5130092
Abstract: A process for sterilizing biological waste such as medical waste and a biomass fuel product from sterilized waste are disclosed. The biological waste preferably includes waste capable of sorbing substantial amounts of a liquid fuel having a boiling temperature higher than about 240.degree. F. The waste is shredded and then introduced into a container holding the liquid fuel, which is maintained at atmospheric pressure at a temperature between about 240.degree. F. and the boiling temperature of the liquid fuel. The shredded waste is immersed in the liquid fuel for a time sufficient to effect sterilization of the shredded waste. Thereafter, the sterilized shredded waste is removed from the container, and ground to either make it pumpable or increase its pumpability, and to further destroy the physical shape of the waste as to make it unrecognizable. The ground waste is then pumped to a desired location. The waste with sorbed liquid fuel is atomizable and usable as a fuel for many applications.

  • Patent number: 5033230
Abstract: A method is disclosed for drying and passivating wet coals, for example bituminous, subbituminous or lignite. The wet coal is introduced into a heating zone at a controlled rate, then is contacted with a heavy hydrocarbonaceous treatment material having a softening point of at least 60.degree. C. The particles and treatment material are simultaneously intimately mixed and are heated to a temperature of at least 200.degree. C. but below the coal decomposition temperature while being moved along the heating zone in a plug flow manner. The particles are then cooled in a cooling zone.

  • Patent number: 4822380
Abstract: A clean and attractive carbonaceous fuel product is provided for improved convenience and marketability. Coal or charcoal can be coated with a clean and durable coating for cleanliness in handling; and, the coating can be colored as desired. Further, a metal salt can be added to the coating or the product itself to color the flame while the product burns. Paraffin can be used as the coating, and the paraffin is maintained above its melting point to improve gloss. Other additives can also improve gloss. Coal is preferably coated with latex to provide an attractive coating that will prevent breaking of the coal. A flammable liquid can be incorporated into charcoal briquettes for easier lighting; and, the liquid reduces the amount of paraffin used in the coating. A masking agent hides the odor of the flammable liquid, the masking agent being in the coating rather than in the flammable liquid itself.
