Patent number: 8469155Abstract: A gate below an elevator car which prevents access to an elevator hoistway. The gate slidably mounts behind a toe guard and retracts upwardly if the bottom of the gate encounters a person, object or the floor of the elevator pit during downward travel of the elevator. The gate latches when fully retracted so that it may be out of the way during maintenance. A microswitch is wired into the emergency stop circuit that engages when the gate is latched. A trip wire defining the bottom edge of the gate is also wired into the emergency stop circuit, so that the elevator will stop its downward travel if it encounters an obstruction. Rubber bumpers on the bottom edge of the gate cushion impact to people or objects who happen to be below the elevator car and are struck by the gate during downward elevator movement.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2012Date of Patent: June 25, 2013Assignee: Vertical Motion Innovations, LLCInventors: Christian E. Patent number: 8091292Abstract: An apparatus for providing improved egress and greater safety for subterranean window wells. The apparatus has relatively low lifting force to allow people to escape fires and earthquake damaged buildings through egress windows. The apparatus can include mounts which are U-shaped and fit over opposing sides of the window well wall and are connected thereto. The mounts may have pivots which connect to an operator that applies upward force upon a grate assembly that covers the window well. The mounts and grate are hinged to pivot and allow the grate to be opened when needed. The operator has swivel and ball connections and an adjustable outboard connector.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2006Date of Patent: January 10, 2012Inventor: Stephan J. Jalbert

Patent number: 7086642Abstract: A rackable gate having a gate panel with spaced-apart rails connected to a plurality of first pickets and a second picket. The second picket attaches to the respective rails on a side edge opposing the attachment of the first pickets to the rail. Distal opposing ends of the rails are received and pivotally secured in openings defined in opposing gate posts. The gate racks or moves so that the rails are disposed at an oblique angle relative to the pickets. The opposing fastening of the second picket and the opposing distal end of the rail received in the post restrict the rail from pivoting away from the pickets when the panel is racked to track the contour of the terrain. A method of making a rackable gate is disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2003Date of Patent: August 8, 2006Assignee: XFM, Inc.Inventor: James R. O'Brien

Publication number: 20040055218Abstract: A safety window comprising a frame unit and central cartridge, on which are mounted security bars, is employed to provide an easy exit route for an operator in the event of an emergency. The safety window is maintained in the closed position by spring biased locking bar mechanism. When required, the operator manually activates the locking bar mechanism so opening the window. This process results in the central cartridge and associated security bars to pivot through 180° so as to locate in an open position that is clear of the frame unit.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 15, 2003Publication date: March 25, 2004Inventors: Isaac Forsyth, Neil Forsyth

Patent number: 6405497Abstract: A gate for sliding windows or doors in a frame is provided. The gate provides two gate elements. The first element is attached to the window frame. The second element is attached to the sliding window. The two elements are coupled together to allow each element to slide across the other. The elements are positioned in the frame to create a barrier in a space created when a window is slid to an open position.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2000Date of Patent: June 18, 2002Inventor: George Christopolous

Patent number: 5628355Abstract: A window safety system having a first and second vertical track installed as mirror images on opposite sides of a window frame. The system utilizes at least one elongate blocking element which extends across the window width and is secured to opposing guide elements which smoothly travel within the vertical tracks. A system cover is engaged at opposite ends to guide elements which travel in the vertical tracks. The guide elements are connected in series to one another by a flexible belt within the vertical tracks. The system cover interacts with a lower rail of a window sash such that when the window sash is raised to an open position, the system cover travels with the lower sash. This travel in turn causes the guide elements to translate within the vertical tracks and guiding blocking rods to a position laterally across the opening of the window. The blocking rods thereby prevent egress of a child or the like through the open window.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1995Date of Patent: May 13, 1997Inventor: Lanny Gist

Patent number: 4669628Abstract: An automatically openable lid for a receptacle structure has a safety device for preventing any accident in the presence of an obstacle in the range of opening and closing movements of the lid. The device includes a safety guard extending around a front surface of the lid and beyond a rear surface thereof. The guard is mounted on the lid in a semi-fixed manner such that the guard is normally kept immovable relative to the lid during the movement thereof and such that the guard is pivotally movable relative to the lid when the guard is hit by any obstacle during the movement of the lid. Responsive to the movement of the guard relative to the lid, a detecting means is operable to energize a brake for stopping the movement of the lid.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1986Date of Patent: June 2, 1987Assignee: Yoshida Kogyo K.K.Inventor: Keizo Hatta
