  • Patent number: 8905952
Abstract: A simple, lightweight, portable, lumbar spinal distraction device is provided which employs a frame having concave left and right hand upper leg contacting members for asserting forces against substantially vertically oriented left and right upper leg portions of a user assuming a substantially horizontal position. The user pushes the portable frame forward by manually grasping a pair of handles, causing the left and right contacting members to press against the vertically oriented left and right upper leg portions respectively. Increased unilateral traction ability is produced by simply having the user apply extra force to one handle or the other. This will permit users suffering from unilateral pain in the buttocks, hip or leg to obtain a little extra pressure on the symptomatic side. Anyone who has suffered low back pain can relate to the fact that some days the pain feels more right sided and some days more left sided.

  • Patent number: 8905958
Abstract: A brace and traction device and associated methods of operation. In one embodiment, the device incorporates a forwardly open head and jaw brace which is adjustably supported vertically above a forwardly collar member. The brace and the collar member are adapted such that the brace is able to mate with the collar member while still being able to rotate to the subject's left and right while remaining planar to the collar member. Adjustment may be accomplished for example manually or via an electronic motor controlled by a control mechanism and microprocessor. The microprocessor may be adapted to store information regarding a user's sessions, and facilitate communication with patient and physician personal devices, thus sending these data from recorded sessions. The processor element may also be adapted to implement therapy sessions based on physician-entered program specifications, or based on pre-programmed specifications.

  • Patent number: 8870803
Abstract: Bone fracture reduction devices, systems, and methods couple to a patient platform a mechanical bone fracture reduction fixture, which is sized and configured to be conveyed separate from the patient platform. The bone fracture reduction fixture carries an array of mechanical force reduction assemblies that are sized and configured to independently mechanically manipulate a fractured bone region. Each mechanical force reduction assembly functions independently of the other mechanical force reduction assemblies, to independently apply and maintain one of the prescribed mechanical reduction forces to the fracture and also mechanically reduce the fracture in the desired reduction planes.

Abstract: A fraction splint for providing treatment to a broken or damaged lower extremity which includes a segmented-pole, an ankle assembly having a pad, strap, and retaining assembly, wherein the ankle assembly is retained inwardly of the foot, a groin assembly having a pad, strap, and tensioning assembly extending away from the ankle assembly, and a plurality of cravat straps. The ankle assembly has a curved back plate with upper and lower recesses to permit space for ankle prominences and a double-socket and closed-ended retaining cap for receiving a folded or non-folded end of the segmented-pole. The tensioning assembly includes a back plate, an open-ended intermediary socket, an adjustment assembly, and a retaining cap having a closed-ended socket for receiving the opposite end of the pole. The adjustment assembly is used to move the upper retaining cap towards or away from the back plate to apply traction to the attached leg.

  • Patent number: 8870799
Abstract: An array of mechanical force reduction assemblies sized and configured to independently mechanically manipulate a fractured bone region. Each assembly functions independently of the other assemblies, to apply and maintain one of the prescribed mechanical reduction forces to the fracture, to thereby mechanically reduce the fracture in a desired way. A carrier coupled to the assembly accommodates temporary attachment of an orthotic brace, residing thereon, partially or fully assembled in a region of the bone fracture. A linkage mechanism accommodates the rotational articulation of the brace in response to the application of one or more mechanical force vectors, to move the bone fracture into a desired anatomic orientation. A locking mechanism maintains the orientation of the brace to maintain the desired anatomic orientation. After release from the carrier, the brace serves in an ambulatory fashion to maintain the desired anatomic orientation after reduction and as healing occurs.

  • Patent number: 8852134
Abstract: A portable splint system is disclosed. The portable splint system has a limb supporting splint having at least two sections, each section has a substantially continuous cover plate, each cover plate having a concave contoured upper surface for cradling a splinted limb. A locking hinge connects the sections of the limb supporting splint. The limb supporting splint may also have one or more vertical support arches mounted thereon. The limb supporting splint is suitable for use in a bed or overhead traction apparatus. The portable splint system also includes a portable base unit onto which the limb supporting splint may be attached. The portable base unit has a stabilizing frame, height adjusters for independently adjusting the height of the proximal end of the limb supporting splint and the distal end of the limb supporting splint, and traction weight supports.

The second end of the cinch strap includes an adjustment mechanism receiving the free end of the cinch strap such that the cinch strap forms a closed loop. A diameter of the closed loop is adjustable with the adjustment mechanism. The distractor strap further includes a cross strap comprising a first loop, a second loop, and strapping connecting the first loop and the second loop. The cinch strap is positioned in the first loop and the second loop such that the cross strap extends across the diameter of the closed loop formed by the cinch strap and the cross strap and the cinch strap are slidable with respect to one another.

  • Patent number: 8844536
Abstract: A locking apparatus for use with a head fixation device allows for a stabilizing fixture, such as a rocker arm having a pair of skull pins, to be selectively secured so that the stabilizing fixture can be adjustably rotated to a desired position. In some version the locking apparatus includes a connector that is retained within an opening in a portion of the head fixation device. The connector can translate within the opening and is restricted from rotation. The translating of the connector permits the connector to engage an arch member that retains the stabilizing fixture. The engagement of the connector and arch member is accomplished, in some versions, by way of matching axial oriented toothed portions or starburst features. In some versions the teeth on the starburst features include a chamfer surface.

  • Patent number: 8845569
Abstract: Devices and methods are disclosed for achieving control and stabilization of bone fractures in mammals, most specifically humans. Stabilization and traction is often required to support fractured bones of the arms or legs. The devices and methods disclosed herein are especially useful in the emergency or military setting. The devices utilize a collapsible, inflatable member that is expanded and locked into position. The frame or inflatable member is fabricated primarily from polymeric materials with low radiodensity. The limb contact regions are adjustable to fit a wide variety of limb sizes and fracture locations. The traction applied by the splint is adjustable, controllable and measurable. The traction splint is compact and will fit in a compartment of most emergency rescue vehicles, thus making it more available for use than standard traction splints used today. The traction splint is either a separate device or integrated into a backboard.
