The machine is exposed to extremes in temperature as well as extremes in pressure. One of the chief issues with the operation of this machine are the interruption of use of the machine if the machine should fail or begin to produce defective bottles. Any shutdown of the machine leads to disruption in production and is unwelcome.

An indexing mechanism moves from a station at which the mold ring is deposited on the main mold to a station where the mold ring is removed from the main mold after completion of the casting process. A movable shuttle member is connected to pivotally mounted pairs of support fingers for the mold rings through connecting rods. An external drive motor operates a single actuator at each machine cycle. This single actuator causes the entire shuttle to shift and a mold ring to be deposited at one station and a second mold ring to be simultaneously picked up at another station. Because of the mechanical linkage design, one pair of support fingers always opens while all the others close when the single actuator is operated.

    Abstract: Apparatus for producing a glass parison comprises a spindle and a plunger mounted in the spindle for axial displacement. Mechanism is provided for axially displacing the plunger relative to the housing. A press mould has a cavity for carrying glass melt and is movable into a working position aligned with the plunger so that the plunger may enter the mould cavity. A recess is provided in the housing in communication with the mould cavity to receive excess glass melt displaced thereinto in response to positioning of the plunger within the mould cavity. The plunger functions as a valve to alternately block and establish access between a blowing air passage and the front end of the plunger to allow air to be blown against a glass parison being produced. Retaining ring segments which partly define the melt-receiving recess are pivotable between a first position retaining a parison in place, and a second position allowing removal of the parison.

    Abstract: Stemmed glassware is produced by a method and apparatus in which the stem is formed separately and is subsequently joined to the cup at the final phase of the blowing operation of the cup glass. In the apparatus a first rotatable platen having cup molds is provided for blowing of the cups and a second rotatable platen having stem molds is provided for forming the stems. A drop of glass for producing the stems is dropped through a very short distance of about 20 to 40 mm. to prevent excessive cooling of the glass drop and to assist in centering the glass drop in longitudinally divided stem molds. A ring centers the mold halves of the stem molds and a surface on the ring molds a part of the stem base. The second platen rotates the stem molds through a pressing station at which the glass drop is pressed to form the stem to a transfer station at which a transfer means transfers the finished stems from the second rotatable platen and attaches the stems to the cups on the first rotatable platen.
