Abstract: Respective gaps between a pair of vertical outer surfaces parallel to a pressing direction of a punch and inner surfaces of a cavity portion of a die facing the same, at positions at both ends in a longitudinal direction of the cross-section of the punch, are set smaller than respective gaps between outer surfaces parallel to the pressing direction of the punch and inner surfaces of the cavity portion of the die facing the same, at positions at both ends in a width direction of the cross-section. Burring height formed by pressing a punch for burring toward the cavity portion to insert the punch into the same is generally proportional to these gap values, and therefore the burring height at ends in the major axis direction becomes lower than that in the minor axis direction.

Abstract: A process for manufacturing a curved panel for use in constructing a cylindrical storage tank is described. In an embodiment of the process, a flat plate is automatically conveyed into a CNC cutting station to form all bolt holes and cut-out features and to trim the plate to a defined outer dimension. After the cutting station, the plate is automatically conveyed into a roll-forming line configured to form parallel flanges long both longitudinal edges of the plate. Respective leading end regions of the two flanges may undergo a swaging operation by a pair of laterally opposing hydraulically-powered swage dies to form an integral chime region of each flange. • Patent number: 9021706
Abstract: A method of manufacturing large diameter tapered roller bearing cages includes beginning with a metal strip, coil or plate of cage blank material and feeding it into a rolling mill. The rolling mill includes a pair of unparallel forming rolls disposed to define a wedge-shaped gap therebetween. As the cage blank material is fed through the wedge-shaped gap, one lateral side of the cage blank material is plastically deformed to reduce its thickness and to elongate its length, while slight or no deformation is introduced into the other lateral side, thus forming the cage blank into an arc shape. A third roll disposed at the exit side of the forming rolls bends the rolled cage blank into a circular conical ring. Adjacent butt ends of the formed conical ring cage blank are aligned and joined together during the assembly process to form the large diameter tapered roller bearing cage.

  • Patent number: 8333093
Abstract: The invention is based on a method of producing bent spring elements from a spring steel strip (14), wherein a feed unit (16) delivers the spring steel strip (14) from a supply roll (12) to a bending unit (32) having at least three bending rollers (34) and a reverse bending roller (36), of which at least one bending roller (34) and the reverse bending roller (36) can be adjusted transversely to the spring steel strip (14) by bending motors (60, 62), and wherein a cutting-off unit (44) adjoins the bending unit (32), said cutting-off unit (44) cutting off the spring steel strip (14) into individual spring elements by means of cutting-off tools (46, 48; 76, 78). It is proposed that the cutting-off tools (46, 48; 76, 78) be movable in the longitudinal direction of the spring steel strip (14) in a numerically controlled manner and that they be synchronized with the feed movement of the spring steel strip (14) during the cutting-off operation.

Abstract: The invention provides a sheet metal joint and a method for forming a sheet metal joint. The sheet metal joint includes first and second metal sheets disposed in parallel relation to one another. Each of the first and second metal sheets has a plurality of perforations with a tang extending from each perforation. The tangs of the second sheet and the tangs of the second metal sheet are curled together in opposite rotational directions. The tangs of the first metal sheet space the first and second metal sheets from one another and the tangs of the second metal sheet substantially fixedly engage the first and second metal sheets with respect to one another.

Abstract: A method of forming a pair of opposed side walls and a pair of opposed end walls of a sheet metal casket shell from a single piece of sheet metal. The piece of sheet metal has opposite ends and a length equal to the combined length of the pair of side walls and the pair of end walls of the casket shell to be formed. The opposite ends of the piece of sheet metal are secured together to form a tube. A roll forming roller is positioned in an interior of the tube. A female die configured to produce a desired profile for the side walls and the end walls of the casket shell is positioned around an exterior of the tube. The roller is moved outwardly so as to contact an interior surface of the tube and deform the tube toward a die cavity of the female die. The roller is rolled around a perimeter of the interior of the tube so as to deform the perimeter of the tube toward the die cavity of the female die. The desired profile for the side walls and the end walls of the casket shell is thereby produced.

  • Patent number: 8201429
Abstract: A blanking line including an uncoiler, a first feeder, a slitter, and a shear. A coil of metal is carried by the uncoiler. The first feeder removes the material from the coil and typically includes a leveler for leveling the metal. The metal is fed from the leveler into a looping pit that is located between the leveler and slitter. The slitter feeds and slits the material a predetermined distance and is driven with servo motors. The looping pit acts as an accumulator allowing the metal to hang so the slitter can move metal intermittently into a shear while the leveler runs at a constant rate. The shear cuts the material to a predetermined length corresponding with the distance that the material is fed by the slitter. A measuring wheel may be included to measure the distance that the material is moved by the slitter.
