  • Patent number: 5063807
Abstract: The invention pertains to a saw, in particular to a jig saw or scroll saw, with a saw blade which is driven by a force acting on a parallelogram of rods. A saw blade is attached to a connecting shank which joins two longitudinal side arms. The two longitudinal side arms are designed to move in their longitudinal direction. On at least one of the two longitudinal side arms a guide element in the form of, for example, a turning roller, is positively guided against a stationary guide surface which is at an angle, preferablye an acute angle, to the connecting shank. As a result of this positive guidance, the backward movement of the saw blade from the cut edge during the return stroke is reduced to a desired value. Thus a jig saw of small size, but with a large stroke, can be realized in which the saw blade is guided parallel to the cut edge at all times but is moved back by a small amount from the cut edge during the return stroke.

  • Patent number: 4879935
Abstract: A cutter in which a reciprocating knife is driven by an eccentric mechanism. The knife has a drive portion that flexes laterally in a plane perpendicular to the drive axis of the eccentric mechanism. The eccentric drive axis is offset along the perpendicular plane away from the axis on which the knife reciprocates. The offset of the eccentric drive axis allows the flexible drive portion to be kept straighter during the downstroke than in previous cutters. The increased straightening provides greater columnar strength and reduces deflection and stress of the drive portion during the time the knife is in compression. During the upstroke the knife is bent to a greater degree than in the previous cutters, but during this time the knife is in tension, the tension forces opposing rather than aiding the bending. The offset therefore provides for a longer service life for a blade of equal size or allows a reduction in size and mass of the knife to maintain an equivalent service life.

Abstract: Apparatus for cutting patterns from successive contiguous segments of an elongated layup of sheet material has a zoned vacuum table which includes an endless bristle mat conveyor, for shifting a layup along the table to position a segment of the layup in the cutting zone of the table and for holding the layup segment in the cutting zone, and a carriage assembly, which moves a cutting mechanism relative to the table and in cutting engagement with the segment to cut patterns from the segment in response to signals from a programmable controller. A rotary encoder mounted on the carriage assembly has a pinion which engages a rack carried by the conveyor to detect movement of the carriage assembly relative to the conveyor when the carriage assembly returns to its starting position after completing its cutting cycle.

  • Patent number: 4327615
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cutting multi-ply layups of limp sheet material employs an automatically controlled machine with a knife blade and a controller for guiding the blade along cutting paths defined by a marker of pattern pieces. The marker contains a plurality of pattern pieces in a closely packed array which causes the pattern pieces and segments of the cutting paths to be in contact or in close proximity to one another, and makes accurate cutting difficult or impossible. Digitized data defining a cutting program for the marker is preprocessed in a data processor to identify critical segments of cutting paths where cutting difficulties may arise and introduces into the data remedial command signals that guide the cutting blade past the identified critical segments for more accurate cutting.

  • Patent number: 4236432
Abstract: In a fret saw blade having a shank portion and saw-teeth, the saw-teeth are formed in a manner that the centers of the cutting edges of some saw-teeth are depressed and deformed generally in V-shape so as to form sharp ends projecting beyond the side surfaces of the shank portion of the fret saw blade.

  • Patent number: 4178820
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cutting pattern pieces from sheet material with an automatically controlled cutting machine utilizes special control techniques for guiding a reciprocating cutting blade accurately along a desired cutting path defined by the pattern piece peripheries. The cutting machine includes a control computer which also serves as a data processor for generating machine command signals and controlling cutting blade movements. The controller has memory units which contain standard cutting programs and optinal programs. From a program selector panel, the cutting machine operator can select optional programs which modify the standard programs in a manner most suitably adapted to cause the cutting blade to follow the cutting path in the sheet material more accurately. The optional programs vary the feed rate or stroking speed, introduce yaw signals to control blade orientation along the cutting path, or perform other control functions.

  • Patent number: 4133235
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cutting sheet material utilizes a closed loop automatically controlled cutting machine having a reciprocating cutting blade as the cutting tool. Sheet material to be cut is spread in multiple plies to form a layup, and the cutting blade and the material are then moved relative to one another in cutting engagement along predefined lines of cut. During cutting, a sensor detects a cutting parameter that is affected by the interaction of the cutting blade and sheet material, and signals provided by the sensor are fed back in the closed loop automatic control mechanism to adjust or initiate further steps in the cutting operation. Such adjustment or initiation alters the cutting machine operation for cutting conditions in real time in order to improve the overall performance of the machine.

  • Patent number: 4116101
Abstract: In an automatic sawing machine wherein a workpiece is moved in two orthogonal directions by a profile control or a numerical control so as to cut a groove of a predetermined profile, the opposite ends of the fret saw blade are synchronously driven by independent pulse motors so as to direct the fret saw blade always in the tangential direction of the profile.

  • Patent number: 4091701
Abstract: A cutting machine having a table on which multi-ply layups of sheet material are positioned during cutting operations utilizes a reciprocating cutting blade that is suspended in cantilevered fashion above the table and lowered into cutting engagement with the material during cutting. The sheet material and blade are moved relative to one another while the blade is oriented to remain tangent to predefined cutting paths followed through the material. A blade guide is mounted in a presser foot which slides over the material, and several guide rollers in the blade guide engage the sides and trailing edge of the blade to control blade positioning immediately above the sheet material.

  • Patent number: 4055894
Abstract: To provide a directional guiding mechanism for saber type and blade control in tools, having a motor, a manipulating handle and a reciprocating shaft in a housing, to which shaft a saw blade, etc., is attached. One concept of the invention is achieved by the use of a unique control mechanism including a rotatable flexible cable by which to rotate the reciprocating saw blade in the cut, in any desired direction, with less movement or turning of the main body of the tool especially in a restricted or cramped area. These operations can be accomplished with the use of but one hand of the operator, leaving the other hand free to hold firm the material to be cut or worked upon.
