  • Patent number: 7658222
Abstract: A storage building such as a garage of a residential house is heated to a low temperature above freezing but below that suitable for human habitation by connecting a closed loop pipe and a pump so as to pump heat transfer liquid through a portion of the pipe embedded in a cast concrete lid of a septic tank and through another portion of the pipe embedded in a cast concrete floor of the building. The simple system avoids use of a complex heat pump by using the limited heat available from the septic tank to directly heat the garage floor to a low temperature but above freezing.

  • Patent number: 7492832
Abstract: Direct digital QAM modulation at an RF frequency is obtained from digitally synthesized RF signals which are generated for use as the two vectors. The two vectors are individually controlled in phase and summed to provide a combined phase and amplitude modulation that forms the modulated signal. The synthesized RF signal is generated from a higher reference frequency using a variable pulse stretching technique implemented with programmable delay lines. The amount of the pulse stretch in each cycle is controlled by a phase increment value. Pulse stretching can be extended beyond one cycle by pulse swallowing, allowing the generation of an RF signal from DC up to and including the input reference frequency. Phase modulation is added by digital control of the pulse stretching according to the phase modulation data bits.

  • Patent number: 7422665
Abstract: An anode for use in cathodic protection of steel in concrete is formed from an electrically conductive material such as zinc and an ionically conductive material which is preferably a humectant and/or has a pH greater than 12 to enhance current flow. The materials are intimately intermixed through at least a part of the anode body and compressed into the anode body with an electrical connecting lead formed into a core of the body which is wholly conductive material. Portions of the electrically conductive material are pressed into electrical contact to form a plurality of electrically conductive paths within the anode body. Many of the voids in the body are interconnected to form a plurality of ionically conductive paths through the anode body by causing the humectant to migrate through the voids. The large surface area between the ionically conductive paths and the electrically conductive paths increase significantly the contact surface area of the anode body to increase current flow.

  • Patent number: 7415135
Abstract: A signal indicative of a distance from a first element to a second element, such as the end face of a piston from the end wall of its cylinder, is generated by providing an optical imager carried on a housing that is fixed on the end wall with the optical imager pointed to the end face. An image processor is arranged to identify image components, such as the end nut on the piston, from the acquired images of the first element. From the location of the nut the processor can identify the location of the outer edge of the circular end face and can determine the area of the end face in the image by counting pixels within the area. From the measured area as it appears in the image the distance can be calculated. The end face is illuminated by a light source shining through a light pipe passing through a drilled hole in the end wall. Characteristic markings can be applied on the end face for measuring distance when the nut is too close to be visible.

  • Patent number: 7403674
Abstract: Intrusion detection of one section only of a multimode fiber uses a light signal launched into the fiber at a location spaced from the source through a single mode fiber to establish a narrow spectral width, under-filled non-uniform mode field power distribution in the fiber. A small portion of the higher order signal modes at the a second location also spaced from the destination is sampled by a tap coupler and monitored for transient changes in the mode field power distribution which are characteristic of intrusion to activate an alarm. A fiber being used for data transmission can be monitored for intrusion by introducing a monitor wavelength different from that of the data signal. Central to this invention is the use of a bulk optic (commonly referred to as a pass/reflect) wavelength division multiplexer, one which maintains the modal distribution within the fiber.

  • Patent number: 7403675
Abstract: Intrusion detection for a multimode fiber optic cable uses a light signal launched into the fiber through the low ratio leg of a tap coupler to establish a narrow spectral width, under-filled non-uniform mode field power distribution in the cable. A small portion of the higher order signal modes at the remote end is monitored for transient changes in the mode field power distribution which are characteristic of fiber intrusion to activate an alarm. The active signal of a multimode optical fiber is monitored for both signal degradation and transient power disturbance patterns that could indicate fiber damage or physical intrusion. A translator can be provided in an existing optical fiber system in which the data signals are translated in wavelength and/or launch conditions to optimize the monitoring signals in an otherwise non-optimized system.

  • Patent number: 7392646
Abstract: A feed roller primarily for feeding crop into a feeder house of a combine harvester is located above and behind a feed draper and includes an outer flight and retractable fingers for feeding the crop through the zone behind the draper and into the feeder house. The fingers rotate about a finger axis offset from the roller axis so that they extend to a maximum at the draper and are retracted behind the roller to release the crop. When the roller is reversed to release a blockage, the fingers are also reversed in direction and the finger axis is moved rearwardly to the opposite side of the roller so that the fingers are extended behind the roller at the feeder house and retracted at the draper. This movement is done automatically on reversing the roller and uses power from the reversal to move the finger axis using a clutch. An anti-distortion wheel is mounted on the finger shaft to prevent retraction of the finger ends into the roller which can cause damage by loss of proper guidance.

  • Patent number: 7392124
Abstract: In a swather formed by a tractor and attached header for cutting standing crop to form a swath, reel speed and optionally draper speed are controlled relative to ground speed by a control system including a manually operable input and display available to the operator. The control system acts to calibrateā€ the control output so that the control module has a secondary reference point as to how the PWM valve should function in the event of a speed sensor failure. Instead of using the speed sensor signal as a reference, the control system now compares the set point with the stored table (which may in one example provide 256 values) containing the PWM voltage/current values. These values correspond to a set of actual speed sensor values taken during the profiling procedure, plus extrapolated values equalling 256 points.

  • Patent number: 7380608
Abstract: In a method for de-watering a gas well, the water is pumped by an inverted API pump acting as a reciprocating pump from a position in the well casing below the gas formation and the gas escapes through the well casing around the transport tubes. The reciprocating pump is driven by a downhole engine in the form of a cylinder and piston which is moved by a hydraulic pump at the surface acting to generate a flow in a hydraulic fluid to drive the piston from a start position to an end position and causing fluid to be transferred from the cylinder on the other side of the piston to a counterbalance chamber against a back pressure provided by a charge of nitrogen gas. At the end of a pumping stroke of the reciprocating pump, pressure in the hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic pump through is released to cause the back pressure of the counterbalance chamber to drive the piston back to the start position.

  • Patent number: 7380293
Abstract: A filling system for a toilet tank prevents continual flow to the tank in the event of a leak from the tank by providing a hydraulically actuated safety valve for halting water flow to the filling valve in the event that the water flow continues for a time longer than an expected time of filling. The safety valve has a valve member connected to a piston mounted in a cylinder defining a first chamber on one side of the piston and a second chamber on the other side. A venturi in the supply duct provides in a low pressure chamber of the venturi a water pressure lower than the supply pipe pressure such that a pressure difference across the piston caused by the difference in pressure between the supply pressure and the low pressure chamber causes the piston to move from the first end toward the second end. A flow control orifice regulates a rate of flow of water such that a time of movement of the piston is greater than an expected time required to fill the toilet tank.
