Patent number: 6261485Abstract: A process for producing carbon foam or a composite is disclosed which obviates the need for conventional oxidative stabilization. The process employs mesophase or isotropic pitch and a simplified process using a single mold. The foam has a relatively uniform distribution of pore sizes and a highly aligned graphic structure in the struts. The foam material can be made into a composite which is useful in high temperature sandwich panels for both thermal and structural applications.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1999Date of Patent: July 17, 2001Assignee: UT-Battelle, LLCInventor: James W. Patent number: 6256521Abstract: A multi-domained bulk REBa2Cu3Ox with low-angle domain boundaries which resembles a quasi-single domained material and a method for producing the same comprising arranging multiple seeds, which can be small single crystals, single domained melt-textured REBa2Cu3Ox pieces, textured substrates comprised of grains with low misorientation angles, or thick film REBa2Cu3Ox deposited on such textured substrate, such seeds being tailored for various REBa2Cu3Ox compounds, in specific pattern and relative seed orientations on a superconductor precursor material which may be placed in contact with a porous substrate so as to reduce the amount of liquid phase in the melt. Because seeds can be arranged in virtually any pattern, high quality REBa2Cu3Ox elements of virtually unlimited size and complex geometry can be fabricated.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1997Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: UT-Battelle, LLCInventors: Dominic F. Patent number: 6212312Abstract: A wavelength division multiplex/demultiplexer (WDM) has a plurality of narrow-band zeroth order resonant grating filters (10a-10e) to multiplex or demultiplex multiple wavelengths that have very close channel spacing. In one embodiment, a plurality of these filters (10a14 10e) are assembled in a block (20) in parallel and at an angle to a propagation axis to reflect signals for a plurality of discrete frequency channels. The block spacing material (21) can be liquid or solid. In another embodiment, the angular orientation of the resonant grating filters (10f-10g) is varied slightly to provide reflected signals for the plurality of discrete frequency channels. Crosstalk between channels can be reduced by reflecting each signal three times. Individual filters can be of binary structure or a sinusoidal grating (16) and can be made using thin film techniques.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1999Date of Patent: April 3, 2001Assignee: U.T. Patent number: 6211499Abstract: A method for separating and recovering components includes the steps of providing at least a first component bonded to a second component by a microwave absorbent adhesive bonding material at a bonding area to form an assembly, the bonding material disposed between the components. Microwave energy is directly and selectively applied to the assembly so that substantially only the bonding material absorbs the microwave energy until the bonding material is at a debonding state. A separation force is applied while the bonding material is at the debonding state to permit disengaging and recovering the components. In addition, an apparatus for practicing the method includes holders for the components.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1999Date of Patent: April 3, 2001Assignee: BWXT Y-12 L.L.C.Inventors: Marvin S.
