  • Patent number: 5471815
Abstract: An improved packaging device designed for the filling of flexible, tubular casing and for the sealing of the casing in discreet lengths which may then be further processed or packaged. The device includes a mounting assembly having a floor mounted frame with a rotatable platform supported by the frame. Adjacent the frame and platform is a device for feeding product through a product horn into casing which is shirred on the horn. The platform includes a plurality of specially designed clippers arranged in a circular array. As filled casing is discharged from the feeding mechanism it is directed tangentially into the circular array of rotating clippers which are equally spaced from each other. The clippers sequentially operate to gather the casing, apply spaced, double clips to the casing, sever the connection between adjacent clips, and to then discharge the packaged link from the device.

  • Patent number: 5460067
Abstract: A device for performing the continuous cutting of materials of any form and nature, provided they are stratified and not flexionally rigid. The device generally comprises: fixed and mobile support surfaces; a mobile cutting shear cooperating with a fixed cutting shear; a fixed blocking unit on the fixed support surface side of the cutting shears; a mobile blocking unit on the mobile support surface side of the cutting shears; an eccentric for driving mobile portions of the device, including the mobile cutting shear, the eccentric being synchronized with the fixed and mobile blocking units; and a link block and slide guide. Non-rigid, stratified materials thereby may be more easily cut in that the invention substantially reduces or eliminates the dragging effect of the material that typically occurs during the cutting process.

  • Patent number: 5448986
Abstract: A heat exchanger comprises a clam shell having a first passage, a second passage and a third passage connected sequentially in a plane. A hot collector box made from metal, for example, aluminized steel, in connected to the third passage. A secondary heat exchanger coil is operatively connected to the hot collector box. A second collector box or cold collector box made from plastic is connected to the outlet of the secondary heat exchanger coil. Condensate from the flue and condensate from the cold collector box may be discharged in a common line from the furnace. The clam shell is constructed and arranged to remove about 90%-95% of the energy from the flue products flowing therethrough. The heat exchanger is disposed in a passage between the inlet and the outlet in the housing of a furnace. Air is forced over the heat exchanger, which is disposed in the passage, by a blower in the housing.

  • Patent number: 5434073
Abstract: Relatively inactive fusion proteins are activatable by enzymes of the clotting cascade to have fibrinolytic and/or clot formation inhibition activity. For example, a fusion protein comprising two hirudin or streptokinase molecules, linked by a cleavable linkage sequence, may be cleaved to yield anti-thrombotic hirudin or fibrinolytic streptokinase by thrombin or Factor Xa. Fibrinolytic or clot formation inhibition activity is therefore directed to the site of clot formation. Cleavable streptokinase/hirudin heterodimers are claimed.

  • Patent number: 5434075
Abstract: A hybridoma (termed "UIC2 hybridoma", ATCC Accession No. HB11207) producing monoclonal antibodies (termed "UIC2 mAb") directed against an extracellular domain of a cell surface P-glycoprotein antigen associated with multidrug resistance in primate cells was produced by fusing a human myeloma cell with a spleen cell derived from a BALB/c mouse immunized with syngeneic 3T3 fibroblasts previously transfected with the isolated human mdr1 cDNA. UIC2 mAb, thus produced, as well as fragments and recombinant derivatives thereof, may be used to detect and isolate multidrug resistant primate cells and human mdr1 gene products, and to reverse multidrug resistance in primate cells, including cells of multidrug resistant human tumors.

  • Patent number: 5432058
Abstract: This invention is a method for measuring the ability of a human to absorb cholesterol. The method uses two different cholesterol tracers, the first injected into the blood stream and the second ingested by the human subject. After a waiting period a blood sample is taken from the human subject and analyzed to determine percent cholesterol absorption based on the actual amounts of the two naturally occurring, metabolically stable cholesterol tracers in the blood. The method of this invention is useful in identifying human subjects as high cholesterol absorbers and thereafter administering therapeutic agents to the subject that inhibit the absorption of cholesterol.

  • Patent number: 5431458
Abstract: A coupling for no-hub pipe segments has a shield covering an elastomeric gasket. The shield has a plurality on corrugations oriented transverse to the pipe axis and arranged in discrete areas. These corrugations are separated by corrugations oriented parallel to the pipe axis arranged in discrete areas. Clamping bands securely clamp the shield and gasket to the pipe segments. The pattern of corrugations permits the shield to assume a shouldered shape when the clamping bands are tightened and the coupling is installed on pipes of slightly varying diameter. The gasket is provided with a pattern of thick sealing sectors and adjacent groove sectors laterally spaced relative to thick sealing sectors. This pattern permits the clamping bands and shield to form a restriction impeding the movement of the shield relative to the gasket when the clamping bands are tightened.

  • Patent number: 5429570
Abstract: An exercise device for use with free weight plates. A weight lifting bar has a length sufficient to provide for two hand lifting of the bar. The weight lifting bar is supported by a support structure. A mechanism is operatively connected to and associated with the weight lifting bar, storage bars for storage of the free weight plates, and the weight lifting bar support structure. The mechanism causes the storage bars and the weight lifting bar to occupy positions of alignment and proximity of the storage bars with the weight lifting bar, when desired. Free weight plates may be moved manually off the weight lifting bar into storage on the storage bars, and alternatively, moved manually off the storage bars and onto the weight lifting bar, by sliding of the free weight plates along the storage bars and along the weight lifting bar while the storage bars and weight lifting bar are in alignment and proximity with each other.

  • Patent number: 5429937
Abstract: Intestinal cell endogenous heparin mediated absorption of cholesterol or fatty acids in mammals is inhibited through the oral administration of heparin, an active heparin subfraction or heparinase. Suppression of cholesterol esterase-mediated absorption in humans can be inhibited by soluble heparin by two mechanisms, i.e. displacement of the enzyme from the intestinal cell membrane and inhibition of enzymatic activity of the displaced enzyme.

  • Patent number: 5427013
Abstract: An improved vacuum motor for actuating heat, ventilating and air conditioning control systems (HVAC), which uses a conical spiral spring and a bonded connection between the housing and cap to reduce weight, size, cost and noise. The motor includes a bellows which forms an airtight compartment inside the motor housing with the cap and a plunger connected to the bellows. The conical spring biases the bellows to a fully expanded position. A negative pressure or vacuum in the air line connected to the housing causes the bellows to collapse and compress the spring. As the bellows collapses, the attached plunger is pulled axially into the motor housing. The movement of the plunger actuates the connected HVAC device.
