  • Patent number: 4517473
Abstract: In order to control the auto-sampler in a device such as a gas chromatograph in which data is sampled by an analog-to-digital converter, the converter providing outputs indicative of its status and having one state when the converter is enabled, another state when the converter is disabled and pulsing between said states when the converter is acquiring data, an automatic injection control device is provided which: counts the sampling pulses from the converter to insure that a full conversion cycle has been completed and sets a first signal to so indicate; through a retriggerable, one-shot multivibrator insures that the last of the sampling pulses is completed and provides a second signal accordingly; and adds these two signals with the status signal indicating that the converter is in a condition to receive data to provide a trigger signal for use by the auto-sampler.Further, a method for generating triggering signals to initiate such event is presented.

  • Patent number: 4452973
Abstract: Poly(glycolic acid)/poly(oxyalkylene) ABA triblock copolymers having the following formula: ##STR1## and wherein x and y have values which correspond to a total polyglycolide content of about 75 to 95 weight percent and a total polyoxyalkylene content of about 5 to 25 weight percent. The copolymers are useful for manufacturing fibers possessing a sufficiently low modulus of elasticity to permit their use as absorbable sutures having the requisite flexibility for use in monofilament form. A process of preparation involves purifying the hydroxyl-ended poly(oxyalkylene) and allowing it to react with glycolide to produce an ABA triblock copolymer of extrusion grade in which A represents a polyglycolic acid block and B represents a poly(oxyalkylene) block.

  • Patent number: 4429080
Abstract: A triblock copolymer having a proportion of units having the formula: ##STR1## as the end blocks, and the formula (I) randomly combined with a proportion of units having the formula: ##STR2## as the middle block finds particular advantageous use in manufacturing absorbable monofilament sutures and other surgical articles. A surgical article is manufactured from a synthetic absorbable copolymer formed by copolymerizing glycolide with 1,3-dioxan-2-one (trimethylene carbonate) wherein a combination of the monomers is substantially completely polymerized before the addition of the other monomer in the presence of a difunctional initiator at or below about 180.degree. C.; glycolide is added and the temperature increased up to about the melting point of poly glycolide to form a triblock copolymer with a proportion of units having the formula: ##STR3## as the end blocks, and the formula (I) randomly combined with a proportion of units having the formula: ##STR4## as the middle block.

  • Patent number: 4419016
Abstract: A patient medication use compliance aid which enables the users to readily ascertain the time at which they took a previous dose of medication. A time keeping device is incorporated into a typical container for medicinal products without the need for complicated container construction or complex mechanical parts or expensive electronic circuitry. The time keeping device displays the time and day of the week when the container was last opened by the patient-user and continues to display the same, even after closing of the container, to serve as a reminder. The time keeping device may also be provided with settable alarms to visually or audibly alert the patient as to when the next dose is to be taken.

  • Patent number: 4401586
Abstract: Silicate-based composition particles are rapidly and completely expanded to form an expanded, cellular particulate aggregate of maximum density in short periods of time at particle temperatures which are comparatively low, that is, 100.degree. C., compared to existing systems by the utilization of infrared heat sources, either gas or electric, to heat the silicate particles. The use of infrared energy operates in a surprisingly advantageous fashion when the expansion process is carried out on or in the presence of a surface having the capacity to act as a thermal mirror or absorber-reflector of the infrared radiation to make maximum utilization of the radiant energy by the creation of a radiation trap. Carbonaceous materials are preferred for producing such entrapment. A further significant aspect is the discovery of a time-radiation dependency.

  • Patent number: 4345015
Abstract: Toner powders having excellent flow and non-agglomerating properties, and being readily removable from the imaging medium in use for indirect electrophotographic copying, are provided in the form of substantially spherical resin particles, containing additives or not as desired, which particles have been formed from irregularly shaped resin particles heated in a liquid dispersion containing hydrophobic silica particles smaller than 100 nanometers in diameter. The toner particles may be thus formed so as to carry on their surface or dispersed therein electrically conductive particles, such as carbon black, rendering them attractable by electrical inductance.

  • Patent number: 4342653
Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of solids are readily flocculated with polymeric anionic flocculants containing comonomers of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid and acrylamide. The polymeric flocculant should contain from about 1.0 to about 35.0 mole percent of repeating units derived from 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid and should have a Brookfield viscosity of at least 2.0 centipoises. In addition to their flocculating ability, employment of these copolymers achieves a high degree of compaction in the flocculated solids.
