  • Patent number: 7809030
Abstract: A wavelength converter comprising an arsenic sulfide (As—S) chalcogenide glass fiber coupled to an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) crystal and a laser system using an OPO crystal coupled to an As—S fiber are provided. The OPO receives pump laser radiation from a pump laser and emits laser radiation at a wavelength that is longer than the pump laser radiation. The laser radiation that is emitted from the OPO is input into the As—S fiber, which in turn converts the input wavelength from the OPO to a desired wavelength, for example, a wavelength beyond about 4.4 ?m. In an exemplary embodiment, the OPO comprises a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal. The As—S fiber can include any suitable type of optical fiber, such as a conventional core clad fiber, a photonic crystal fiber, or a microstructured fiber.

  • Patent number: 7803498
Abstract: A nanostructured electrode comprising a conductive electrode substrate having a surface functional group, a catalytic nanoparticle stabilized by a covalently-bound ligand bearing a peripheral functional group capable of interacting to the surface functional group, and a material capable of binding to the peripheral functional group. The conductive electrode substrate can be chemically modified and the surface functional group can create a layer of charge or chemical reactivity. The conductive electrode substrate can be chemically or electrochemically modified to create a surface functional group via covalent grafting capable of supporting multilayer deposition to create a layer of charge or chemical reactivity on the surface. The nanoparticle can be a platinum nanoparticle with covalently bonded negatively-charged ligands and the bridging material can be a polyelectrolyte.

  • Patent number: 7788949
Abstract: A method of making a closed-cell silica foam glass is provided which can include diffusing a substance into a porous glass substrate to form an impregnated substrate, sealing the impregnated glass substrate and heating to a first temperature, wherein the pressure is greater than one atmosphere, heating the container to a second temperature, wherein the second temperature is higher than first temperature, removing the solid glass, non-porous substrate, and heating the solid glass, non-porous substrate to a third temperature to soften the solid glass, non-porous substrate and thereby expand the solid glass, non-porous substrate. A closed-cell silica foam product is provided which can have a closed-cell structure and high temperature insulating property.

  • Patent number: 7785770
Abstract: The use of sugar-containing hydrogels as very highly porous, aqueous support material for the immobilization of oligonucleotides, peptides, proteins, antigens, antibodies, polysaccharides, and other biomolecules for sensor applications. Unusually large sizes of interconnected pores allow large target molecules to pass rapidly into and through the gel and bind to immobilized biomolecules. Sugar-containing hydrogels have extremely low non-specific absorption of labeled target molecules, providing low background levels. Some hydrogel materials do not have this type of homogeneous interconnected macroporosity, thus large target molecules cannot readily diffuse through them. Additionally, they nearly always experience non-specific absorption of labeled target molecules, limiting their usefulness in sensor applications. A method is provided for preparing sugar polyacrylate hydrogels with functional chemical groups which covalently bond oligonucleotides and peptides.

  • Patent number: 7760354
Abstract: A spectroscopic detector includes a tunable light source, such as a continuously tunable, optical parametric oscillator laser; means for measuring the emitted radiation at a plurality of emission wavelengths to obtain a plurality of spectral measurement data; and a processor for processing the spectral measurement data, where the processor includes a multispectral data processing algorithm or is configured for 1) combining the plurality of spectral measurement data into a composite spectrum, and 2) applying the algorithm to the composite spectrum. The spectra such as resonant and near-resonant Raman Spectra that are acquired are more complete and contain more information. A powerful multispectral analysis code such as IHPS, CHOMPS, or ENN analyzes the acquired data points, examining details of the spectra that could not be handled by traditional methods.

  • Patent number: 7759186
Abstract: Methods for producing a junction termination extension surrounding the edge of a cathode or anode junction in a semiconductor substrate, where the junction termination extension has a controlled arbitrary lateral doping profile and a controlled arbitrary lateral width, are provided. A photosensitive material is illuminated through a photomask having a pattern of opaque and clear spaces therein, the photomask being separated from the photosensitive material so that the light diffuses before striking the photosensitive material. After processing, the photosensitive material so exposed produces a laterally tapered implant mask. Dopants are introduced into the semiconductor material and follow a shape of the laterally tapered implant mask to create a controlled arbitrary lateral doping profile and a controlled lateral width in the junction termination extension in the semiconductor.

  • Patent number: 7754145
Abstract: Provided photo-decontamination catalyst material comprising an optically active molecule embedded/incorporated/bridged in a periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO). The optically active molecule is a typically a fluorophore or chromophore, more specifically, a porphyrin or phthalocyanine. The periodic mesoporous organosilica can be a template directed molecularly imprinted periodic mesoporous organosilica. The PMO material incorporating an optically active molecule is useful as a catalyst in photo-decontamination applications, as well as a detection element for stand-off point detection system.

  • Patent number: 7749438
Abstract: Periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMO) which incorporate an optically active molecule into the material for use as an optical indicator of target binding. This material combines the stability, selectivity, and high density of binding sites characteristic of the PMO with the sensitivity and selectivity of the optically active molecule. The material undergoes a change when exposed to a sample containing a target molecule. The change can be observed by visual inspection or through the use of fluorescence spectra.

  • Patent number: 7720511
Abstract: The present invention determines optimal positions of a variable antenna using an artificial intelligence-based genetic algorithm (GA). The GA acquires a fitness value for an individual of a genetic algorithm population by updating positions of the antenna. The population improves through an evolutionary computational process using a fitness measure based on the signal strength. At the end of the process, the system positions the antenna to the best position found by the GA. Therefore, the final position gives exceptionally clear reception for a chosen received frequency.
