  • Patent number: 8245903
Abstract: Two thin-walled jackets a joined by preparing end faces of the jackets by plastically deforming and upsetting microprojections thereon and thereby forming the metal of the upset microprojections into annular beads on inner surfaces of the respective jackets. Then the end faces are abutted while centering the jackets on each other relative to their external diameters. The end faces are then spot welded together in a plane where the end faces abut and then joined with a continuous main weld having a width equal to between four and six times the thickness of the wall of the jackets. Heat is then extracted from the welded jackets starting at a distance not exceeding times the wall thickness from a joint center line where the end faces abut.

  • Patent number: 8234903
Abstract: A forging press has a workpiece manipulator having a shaft centered on and rotatable about an axis, a grab for holding the workpiece in the press and rotationally fixed to the shaft carrying the grab and centered on and rotatable about an axis, and a disk fixed angularly to the shaft and projecting radially outward therefrom. Two couplings are juxtaposed with the disk, rotatable relative to the shaft about, and have respective clutches for locking onto the disk so that when locked onto the disk the couplings are rotationally fixed to the disk. Respective actuators connected to the actuators can angularly shift the disk and thereby rotate the shaft, the grab, and the workpiece held by the grab.

  • Patent number: 8230559
Abstract: A fastener for securing together two garment strap ends having confronting faces has at least male elements mounted on the face of one of the strap ends and respective female elements mounted on the face of the other strap end, generally complementary to the male element, and, with the faces touching or closely juxtaposed, slidably engageable in a direction parallel to the faces with the male elements to fasten the two strap ends together. Respective male and female magnets on the strap ends are oriented so as to hold the strap ends in a finder position with the faces engaging or closely juxtaposed with each other and the male and female elements spaced in the direction and disengaged from each other so that displacement of the strap ends apart in the direction from the finder position will engage and lock together the male and female elements.

  • Patent number: 8230709
Abstract: An elongated workpiece is treated, e.g. rolled, in a production system where treatment devices move the workpiece longitudinally in a horizontal travel direction and at a generally constant travel speed along a horizontal longitudinal path and a control computer is connected to the treatment devices. Straightness of the workpiece is measured by gripping the workpiece at a pair of longitudinally spaced supports, applying tension to a longitudinally extending horizontal portion of the workpiece between the supports, and continuously moving the workpiece in the travel direction at the travel speed with a lower surface of the portion substantially unsupported. At least periodically a vertical spacing is measured between the portion and a straight longitudinal reference line extending in the direction between the supports parallel to the workpiece at the supports. The vertical-spacing measurement are fed to the computer for use controlling the devices.

  • Patent number: 8231102
Abstract: A typical flow-control valve has a housing forming a flow passage and a valve seat. An upstream and downstream valve bodies are is engageable with the seat and form upstream and downstream restrictions. A control piston defines therein outer and inner control compartments. This control piston is coupled to the downstream valve body for joint movement therewith. High-pressure and low-pressure conduits connect the outer and inner control compartments to the flow passage upstream of the upstream restriction and to the flow passage between the upstream and downstream restrictions. A connector element or stem connected to the upstream valve body extends through the control piston and has an outer end projecting out of the housing. A pressure reliever between the control piston and the outer end exerts on the connector element a force urging the upstream valve body upstream and generally equal to a pressure differential across the upstream restriction.

  • Patent number: 8220120
Abstract: A fiber laminate is made by providing a core layer of absorptive fiber material between two outer carrier layers to form a three-layer laminate. This three-layer laminate is then directly juxtaposed with a rigid template formed with an array of throughgoing holes separated by webs. Water jets are then directed at the three-layer laminate juxtaposed with the template to drive the fibers of the core layer out from between the carrier layers at the webs and to hydroentangle the outer layers directly with each other at the webs while leaving the core layer generally intact between the webs at the holes.

  • Patent number: 8221563
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing a crankshaft, in special for diesel engines, wherein a crankshaft blank is produced from austempered ductile cast iron, the casting blank is subjected to heat treatment matched to the austempered ductile cast iron whereby the blank acquires high strength and hardness. According to the invention, surfaces which form bearing surfaces for connecting rods and shaft bearings are undersized before the ADI heat treatment. Following the heat treatment a coating is applied to the bearing surfaces, the layer thickness being matched to the undersize and dimensional deviations as a result of the heat treatment. The coated bearing surfaces are finally finish-machined to the finished size without the need of machining the bearing surfaces of the casting blank after the heat treatment.

  • Patent number: 8216477
Abstract: An apparatus for removing organics from water has an upwardly open and downwardly closed column having a tubular side wall and a floor and a generally closed chamber on the floor of the column and forming with the side wall an upwardly open annular space. The column has an outlet opening into the annular space. A pump forces water containing organics into the chamber and thereby fills the column with water that then flows out of the column through the outlet. An aerator pump moves at least some of the water containing organics out of the chamber, mixes the pumped-out water with bubbles, and pumps the water and bubbles back into a downwardly and horizontally closed but upwardly open flow space in the column above the chamber. A skimmer clears the organics from the surface of the water above the flow space.
