    Abstract: A contactor electrically connects and disconnects a fuel cell from a load. When a failure-detecting mode for detecting a closing failure of a contactor is initiated, an opening command is transmitted to the contactor, and a DC/DC converter connected to a motor changes the load voltage. Then, the load voltage and a fuel cell voltage are compared with each other. If the contactor is in a normal open state, as a result of the opening command, the fuel cell voltage is constant, whereas the load voltage of the DC/DC converter decreases, thereby producing a voltage difference. A closing failure of the contactor is determined when it is detected that the fuel cell voltage is substantially equal to the load voltage.

A failure of the oxygen concentration sensor is diagnosed in a predetermined operating condition including a fuel-cut operation of the engine upon deceleration. The partial-cylinder operation is permitted after completion of the failure diagnosis.

After confirming that the discharge valve has been opened, it is determined whether the check valve can be closed by determining whether the pressure near the fuel supply port of the fuel cell has risen above the predetermined pressure stored in the memory. The warm-up operation of the fuel cell can thereby be efficiently conducted and the fuel cell can be reliably started.

The position sensor determines the position of an object, and the image sensor captures an image of the object. The controller extracts horizontal edges from the processing area, and judges whether each of the extracted edges belongs to the object based on characteristics of the object to be recognized. More practically, the controller can check if each of the extracted edges contains a pixel on a boundary of the processing area. If so, the controller judges to the edge to belong to an object other than the object. The controller can also examine the linearity of each of the extracted edges.
