    Abstract: A test method for foamed cement does not transfer the test composition under pressure from one device to another and the equipment is not handled under dangerous pressure, thereby providing a safe test method. Steps include: rotating a paddle at a first speed in a pressurized foamable cement composition in a receptacle in a high pressure, high temperature chamber such that the foamable cement composition becomes a foamed cement; rotating the paddle at a second speed in the pressurized foamed cement for a selected time period; maintaining the foamed cement static after the selected time period and increasing temperature in the chamber during a foamed cement setting period; thereafter reducing temperature in the chamber and reducing pressure in the chamber; removing the foamed cement in a set condition and the paddle from the chamber; removing the set foamed cement from the paddle; and testing the removed foamed cement.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating foam cement and placing foam cement in an annulus between a casing and a wellbore. The method includes the steps of displacing cement downwardly in the casing and injecting a gas, preferably nitrogen, into the cement at a predetermined location downhole in the casing. The nitrogen may be injected through a ported sub. The ported sub may be connected in a tubing string that is lowered in the casing. The ported sub has a plurality of ports, which may have nozzles connected therein, that communicate a central opening through the ported sub with an annulus between the ported sub and the casing. The rate at which nitrogen is injected into the cement preferably increases from a leading edge of the cement to a trailing edge of the cement so that a consistent foam cement quality is achieved.

    Abstract: A coiled tubing injector apparatus for use in inserting coiled tubing into a well, temporarily suspending the coiled tubing, and removing the coiled tubing from the well is described. The apparatus includes a base with a pair of spaced-apart carriages extending upwardly therefrom. The base is part of a frame positioned above a wellhead. The carriages each have a gripper chain drive system rotatably mounted thereon and movable therewith. An actuation and linkage system allows the carriages to move toward and away from one another in a lateral or transverse direction with respect to the superstructure and the base. Thus, the gripper chain systems comprises gripper chains that can be engaged or disengaged from the coiled tubing extending through the apparatus. A wetting fluid basin is positioned below the gripper chains, and support guides engage the coiled tubing below the gripper chains to prevent buckling of the coiled tubing.

    Abstract: A tubing guide for directing coiled tubing through an injector apparatus and into a well. The tubing guide comprises a frame, which is also referred to as a tubing carrier, extending from a base. The shape of the tubing guide changes depending upon the natural radius of curvature of the tubing. The tubing carrier will conform to provide a path for the coiled tubing that more nearly approximates the residual radius of curvature of the coiled tubing. The carrier has a plurality of segments pivotably connected to one another. The segments can pivot and thus the carrier itself can move from a fully retracted position to a fully rotated position. In the fully rotated position, the carrier can approximate a radius larger than that in the fully closed position. The segments are allowed to pivot or rotate as the tubing is passing therethrough so that the shape of the carrier is continually adjusting so as to provide a more natural path for the coiled tubing.

The outer retainer is likewise made up of a plurality of segments having gaps therebetween that will expand.     Abstract: A method and apparatus for maintaining the fluid column in an annulus are provided. The fluid column support, or fluid column seal is disposed about a second casing being lowered into a well through a first casing already cemented in the well. The fluid column support includes a seal connected to the second casing that engages the first casing as it is lowered therethrough. The seal will allow flow in an upward direction but prevents downward flow. The seal will support, or maintain a fluid column in the annulus between the first and second casing in the event that the fluid level below the seal drops for any reason, such as lost circulation or the failure of a buoyancy chamber in the second casing. The fluid seal, in conjunction with stage tools, provides hydrostatic pressure in the well to maintain proper fluid placement therein.

    Abstract: A cementing head is provided for introduction and separation of fluids in a well. The cementing head comprises a plug container having upper and lower fluid inlets oriented tangent to the bore of the plug container. The upper inlet is located below the upper end of the plug so that a compact manifold can be used therewith. The compact manifold includes first and second discharge tees which may be connected by a one-piece coupling such that rotation of the coupling in one direction causes the discharge tees to seal against a spacer therebetween and rotation in a second direction causes the discharge tees to move apart from one another. A coupling for quick coupling of the plug container to a casing collar is also provided. The coupling apparatus comprises a locking clamp having pivotally connected arcuate clamp portions. Each arcuate clamp portion engages a lower end of a casing collar. A threaded adjustment is provided for increasing an initial compression of a seal against the upper end of the casing collar.

    Abstract: A one trip method for drilling a wellbore below a cemented casing is disclosed. An apparatus for use in performing the method is also disclosed. The method comprises lowering a drill bit into a casing cemented in the wellbore. The casing has float equipment connected therein. The drill bit is rotated in the casing above the float equipment so that it expands radially outwardly to a diameter greater than the inner diameter of the casing. The float equipment, which can be a float shoe or a float collar or any other type of float equipment known in the art, includes an outer case with a valve connected therein. The outer case is comprised of a drillable material. Thus, the drill bit utilized to drill the wellbore can begin its drilling operation above the float equipment and successfully drill a wellbore below the casing having a diameter greater than the inner diameter of the casing.

    Abstract: A downhole tool for sealing a wellbore. The downhole tool includes a packer with a ball seat defined therein. A sealing ball is carried with the packer into the well. The movement of the sealing ball away from the ball seat is limited by a ball cage which is attached to the upper end of the packer. The ball cage has a plurality of ports therethrough for allowing flow into the ball cage and through the packer at certain flow rates. A spring is disposed in a longitudinal opening of the packer and engages the sealing ball to prevent the sealing ball from engaging the ball seat until a predetermined flow rate is reached. When the packer is set in the hole, flow through the frac plug below a predetermined flow rate is permitted. Once a predetermined flow rate in the well is reached, a spring force of the spring will be overcome and the sealing ball will engage the ball seat so that no flow through the frac plug is permitted.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for foaming and then testing the foamed fluid. The apparatus comprises a cylindrical pressure vessel with upper and lower caps. A circular disk with a plurality of openings, which are preferably circular openings, is placed in the pressure vessel. The apparatus also includes a motor with a shaft extending therefrom. The shaft is attached to the pressure vessel so that when the motor is actuated, the pressure vessel can be rotated in a desired revolutions per minute. The method includes placing a mixture in the pressure vessel and then attaching the caps to the upper and lower ends of the vessel. The upper cap has a pressure gauge and has a pressure inlet and a pressure relief valve. The circular disk is placed in the vessel. The vessel is pressurized to a desired pressure with a gas motor. The motor is then actuated to rotate the vessel.

The cylindrical inserts define upward facing and downward facing gripping edges that will engage casing when the barrel slip body is radially expanded. The inserts are preferably tungsten carbide inserts. A sufficient number of inserts are included along the length and around the circumference of the barrel slip so that the barrel slip can get a good grip in the casing wall. Separate metals may be used for the barrel slip body and the inserts so that a higher yield strength alloy steel may be utilized than is possible with other barrel slip arrangements.

An equalizing valve is disposed in the housing and seals the housing to prevent flow therethrough when the packer element is actuated to engage the wellbore. The valve is movable in the closed position wherein communication through the housing is prevented to an open position so that the portion of the wellbore above the packer element may be communicated with a portion of the wellbore below the packer element while the element is in the set position so that pressure above and below the element may be equalized. Once the pressure is equalized, the packer can be unset and retrieved from the wellbore.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for plugging a well. The apparatus includes a well barrier which may be connected to a pipe string and lowered into a well to a selected plug location. The barrier is held in place by the pipe string at the selected plug location. The well barrier will engage the well at the selected plug location. A plugging fluid is displaced through the pipe string and is communicated into the well above the barrier. The well barrier will catch the plugging fluid. After the plugging fluid gels sufficiently to support itself in the well, the pipe string which was utilized to lower the well barrier can be disconnected from the well barrier and removed from the well after the plugging fluid has been allowed to set to a sufficient gel strength. The well barrier consists of a support pipe connected to the pipe string, and a fluid barrier connected thereto.

    Abstract: A mixing apparatus includes a mixing tube, a liquid inlet, a dry substance inlet and a recirculation mixture inlet. The mixing apparatus is utilized with a tub. A liquid and a dry substance may be mixed in the mixing tube and the mixture may be recirculated so that a liquid, a dry substance and a recirculated mixture may all be mixed in a mixing tube and subsequently utilized in a wellbore. The mixing apparatus includes a valve connected to the liquid inlet. The valve comprises a cylindrical outer housing, a jetting sleeve and a rotatable plug therein. The jetting sleeve is disposed in the outer housing and has a plurality of ports which will direct liquid downwardly and inwardly so that it mixes with the dry substance as the dry substance passes downwardly in the mixing tube. The plug may be rotated in the jetting sleeve to completely cover all the jetting ports to prevent flow into the mixing tube and is rotatable to an open position in which liquid may be allowed to flow through the jetting ports.
