Patent number: 4899453Abstract: A magnetic compass is illuminated by a light emitting diode. The compass is nclosed in a case made of a lightweight, plastic composite material. The light-emitting diode is energized by a low profile, nonmagnetic battery connected to the light emitting diode through a nonmagnetic microswitch operated on the exterior of the casing by a pushbutton. The compass has a compass rose with strips of phosphorescent material disposed thereon, a rotatable bezel with a strip of phosphorescent material thereon and a lid having a sighting slot therein traversed by a cross hair. Located at the bottom and top of the cross hair are additional strips of phosphorescent material so that the compass may be utilized in the dark. The phosphorescent material may be charged by ambient light and by light emitted by the light emitting diode.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1988Date of Patent: February 13, 1990Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Ramachandra K. Patent number: H106Abstract: Novel energetic sulfate salts which form a eutectic with ammonium nitrate ntaining explosive formulations are disclosed. The eutectic quality of such formulations facilitates melt loading thereof. Two typical novel sulfate salts of the invention are 1-(2-ammonium sulfatoethyl)-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene and 1,3-Bis-2(2-ammonium sulfoethyl)-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene. Also disclosed is a method for the synthesis of such sulfate salts together also with a method for the synthesis of the necessary alkanol substituted trinitrobenzene derivative precursor.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1985Date of Patent: August 5, 1986Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Everett E. Gilbert

Patent number: H107Abstract: A trigger mechanism for an automatic weapon which has a bolt carrier recicatably mounted in a receiver and biased to slide from a recoiled position to a firing position. The mechanism has a hammer positioned alongside the bolt carrier and pivotally mounted on the receiver for reciprocating between a retracted and a striking position. Also included are a bias spring, a trigger and a catch. The trigger is rotatably mounted on the receiver while the bias spring is attached to the hammer for urging it into a striking position. The catch is connected between the trigger and the hammer for releasably holding the hammer. The catch can retract the hammer in response to rotation of the trigger. The bolt carrier has a stop for engaging the hammer and holding the bolt carrier at its recoiled position. The catch is operable to release the bolt carrier from the stop by retracting the hammer.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1985Date of Patent: August 5, 1986Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Kevin T. Bauer

Patent number: H141Abstract: There is disclosed a fire extinguisher which is not pressurized and is made f thin walled light weight molded plastic or a metal container or a mixture thereof. The container is full of fire extinguishing agent. An explosive device, preferably a detonating cord is in the container which when activated causes gas and shock pressure to burst the container instantaneously expelling the fire extinguishing agent onto the fire being treated.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1985Date of Patent: October 7, 1986Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Anthony E. Finnerty, Lowell K. Bryant, Charles R. Stumpfel

Patent number: H142Abstract: A one piece injection molded sabot with several channels on the inner diaer thereof. The channels run parallel to the fore and aft axis of the sabot. The ambient air rammed into the channels just after firing causes dilation of the sabot and results in rapid disengagement of the sabot and its associated projectile, thus minimizing interference with the desired trajectory of the projectile.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1985Date of Patent: October 7, 1986Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Paul M. Wyluda
-
Patent number: H143Abstract: A vise (10) includes a planar work supporting surface (32) on which an exsive logic element (12) is supported. The logic element abuts an end plate (42) and a side plate (50) removably attached to the work supporting surface. A clamping jaw push plate (82) forces the logic element against the end plate.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 1986Date of Patent: October 7, 1986Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: H. John Blische

Patent number: H151Abstract: A disperser of a powdery cloud which may be used to defeat infra-red sens used by enemy forces and an arrangement which will effectively and efficiently produce a cloud of powder for military applications. The disperser is provided with a barrel containing powder to which a cover is secured. The cover has an axial opening provided with an upper and lower cylindrical pipe section communicating therewith. A hollow elbow-like pysi is also secured to a second opening in the cover. Air is forced into the upper cylindrical pipe and travels down through the lower cylindrical pysi into the powder. This forced air carries the powder up to the elbow-like pipe and out into the atmosphere as a powdery cloud. Control of the dispersion process is by means of two slide-valves provided on the upper cylinder pysi.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1984Date of Patent: November 4, 1986Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: William G. Rouse, Jacob Sofinowski, Ronald J. Morin

Patent number: H217Abstract: A hydraulic recoil mechanism, which may be used as a shock absorbing device ontrols both the recoil and counter-recoil motion of a cannon. Main recoil energy is dissipated via a movable cylindrical piston rod which pumps hydraulic fluid through a series of orifices into a primary chamber and is subsequently metered through an orifice effected by the traveling piston head and a fixed variable geometry control rod. A buffer spear arrangement integrated at the opposing end of the control rod dissipates final counter-recoil energy via a metering cavity contained in the returning piston. The piston rod assembly carries a ring-like floating piston which, upon recoil, closes a by-pass orifice and, upon counter-recoil, opens the by-pass orifice. A temperature compensator mechanism is also integrated into the system to accommodate thermal expansion of the fluid during sustained operation.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1984Date of Patent: February 3, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: John K. Jorczak
