Abstract: A process for making a blend of high-density polyethylene polymers containing one or more C3 to C12 .alpha.-olefin comonomers. The process begins in two parallel streams. In one stream ethylene is polymerized alone, and in the second stream ethylene is polymerized with the comonomer(s). The two streams are combined in a subsequent reactor where the polymerization process is completed. The polymerization produces a polymer wherein the comonomer is concentrated in the higher molecular weight fractions.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of making 3-hydroxy-2,4,5-trifluorobenzoic acid. A aqueous solution is prepared of an alkali metal base and a tetrafluorophthalimide. The solution is heated to produce a mixture of a salt of a 4-hydroxy-3,5,6-trifluorophthalamic acid and a salt of a 3-hydroxy-2,4,5-trifluorobenzamide. The solution is neutralized with acid to form a precipitate of the 4-hydroxy-3,5,6-trifluorophthalamic acid and the 3-hydroxy-2,4,5-trifluorobenzamide. The precipitate is reacted with a mineral acid to produce 3-hydroxy-2,4,5-trifluorobenzoic acid.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of pentahaloethoxy benzoyl halide compounds comprisingA) chlorinating p-cresyl trifluoroacetate to form p-.alpha., .alpha.-dichloro-.beta.-,.beta.-,.beta.-trifluoroethoxy benzotrichloride;B) converting the p-.alpha., .alpha.-dichloro-.beta.-,.beta.-,.beta.-trifluoroethoxy benzotrichloride to p-pentafluoroethoxy benzoyl fluoride.
Abstract: Chlorinated phthalic anhydrides are converted to fluorinated phthalic acids without dilactone formation by reacting an anhydride with a primary amine under anhydrous conditions to form the corresponding chlorinated-N-substituted phthalimide which in turn is reacted with a fluorinating agent under anhydrous conditions to form the corresponding fluorinated phthalimide which is hydrolyzed to form the corresponding fluorinated phthalic acid.In a preferred embodiment tetrachlorophthalic anhydride is refluxed with aniline in the presence of glacial acetic acid for 5 to 10 hours to form tetrachloro-N-phenylphthalimide which is reacted with KF in sulfolane in the presence of tributylhexadecylophosphonium bromide under nitrogen at 140.degree. C. to 160.degree. C. for 10 to 15 hours to form tetrafluoro-N-phenylphthalimide which in turn is hydrolyzed by refluxing with 50% H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 for 15 to 25 hours. The tetrafluoro-N-phenylphthalimide is a novel compound.
Abstract: Oxydiphthalic anhydrides of the formula ##STR1## are prepared by reacting a halophthalic anhydride with potassium carbonate in:(1) a solvent-free reaction medium wherein the molar ratio of halophthalic anhydride:potassium carbonate is greater than 2:1; or(2) a high boiling solvent which improves the mixing of the components, and aids in subsequent purification of the product. The molar ratio of halophthalic anhydride to potassium carbonate is about 1.5:1 or greater. The oxydiphthalic anhydride can be purified by filtering or centrifuging a hot solution of the oxydiphthalic anhydride in a high boiling solvent to remove impurities, followed by cooling the solution to precipitate the oxydiphthalic anhydride, which can be removed from the solution by filtration or centrifuging.
