  • Patent number: 8250817
Abstract: A reinforcing system for a guy anchor used in a guyed or additionally guyed tower includes a concrete structure formed around the guy anchor. The concrete structure has a top surface slightly above grade level. The reinforcing system further includes a supplemental anchor shaft. The supplemental anchor shaft is attached to the existing anchor head and extends down into the concrete structure, where it is retained and encased therein. The concrete structure preferably has a base and at least one wall that extends down from the base and has a surface that faces the tower to resist horizontal forces. The reinforcing system is sufficiently strong to keep the guy anchor in place even if the original anchor shaft completely corrodes. The supplemental anchor shaft does not generally come into contact with soil. It therefore resists corrosion and is expected to provide a long service life.

  • Patent number: 8245959
Abstract: A method for disposing of self-powered cards includes eradicating any identifying information from the card without damaging the power source in a manner that would allow unwanted materials to become exposed, and disposing of the power source. In one embodiment, the method includes first identifying the location of the power source. Eradication can take many forms, for example, damaging the magnetic strip (demagnetizing or cutting); obscuring information on the body of the card; and/or disabling the smart chip. Once all identifying information is eradicated without damaging the power source, the power source can be properly disposed of at a waste disposal site. The information can be removed by the owner of the information or by a facility that has security safeguards to protect the information. Because the identifying information is eradicated, any waste disposal site that disposes of power sources can be used, regardless of the sensitivity of the information.

  • Patent number: 8240215
Abstract: A technique for measuring pressure of a material directs one or more laser beams at the material (e.g., a pressurized fluid) to create a distribution of electromagnetic field intensity which varies over an intensity range and induces dielectric breakdown in the material. An emission pattern of broadband light from the dielectric breakdown is detected, and a value of a characteristic of the emission pattern (e.g., location of a threshold intensity or of a peak intensity) is processed (e.g., by a computer or similar electronic processor) to generate a pressure measurement signal representing a pressure of the material. Processing typically employs a pre-established calibration function which associates a set of stored values of the characteristic with corresponding known pressures of the material, obtained for example by preceding similar measurements of the same material under conditions of known pressures.

  • Patent number: 8242779
Abstract: A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method for detecting hydrogen peroxide includes stimulating a spin signal in a liquid sample in a static magnetic field by exciting the sample with a first electromagnetic pulse having a frequency corresponding to a hydrogen NMR frequency; after a first time period, refocusing the spin signal by a series of second electromagnetic pulses also having the NMR-corresponding frequency and separated by a first echo time, while sampling a first train of spin signals; and refocusing the spin signal by a series of third electromagnetic pulses having the NMR-corresponding frequency and separated by a second echo time while sampling a second train of spin signals, the second echo time different from the first echo time. First and second spin-spin relaxation times are derived from the trains of spin signals, and a quotient of the spin-spin relaxation times indicates the presence of hydrogen peroxide.

  • Patent number: 8234086
Abstract: Power sourcing equipment in a power over Ethernet (POE) system detects the connection of multiple powered devices to an inline power delivery channel to enable coherent power sharing among the devices. The PSE applies a standard detection signal (such as a detection voltage) to the power delivery channel, then detects and interprets a responsive signal (such as a detection current) which would normally be either zero or a non-zero value indicating the presence of one powered device. The PSE determines whether the second detection signal indicates that multiple powered devices may be connected, for example by detecting its value as a multiple or sub-multiple of a standard responsive signal. If so, the PSE provides additional distinct signals each eliciting a distinct individual response signal from a corresponding powered device, and detects each distinct individual response signal to identify the powered devices connected to the power delivery channel.
