  • Patent number: 4941977
Abstract: A cross flow plate separator of the type having an assembly of parallel plates inclined to the horizontal plane in a container between a supply chamber and a discharge chamber, and at least one collecting chamber above or below the plate assembly for collecting components separated from liquid flowing between the plates from the supply to the discharge chambers, and wherein transverse dividing baffles extend the collecting chambers to a depth below a collected sediment layer or into a floating layer as the case may be, is improved by provision of auxiliary transverse baffles in the collecting chamber between the larger dividing baffles, the auxiliary baffles each having one edge in contact with the plate assembly and extending into said collecting chamber a distance substantially short of either sediment or floating layers, to suppress liquid flow exterior to the plate assembly between the dividing baffles.

  • Patent number: 4913356
Abstract: For seeding plots of ground where the seed can be spread over the surface and thereafter cultivated into the soil, use is made of a container in the form of a jar to hold the seed and from which the seed can be ejected by a stream of water. In the device of the invention water serves a multiple purpose. A stream of water is projected through a valve into the jar. One portion of the stream, with the aid of an auxiliary passage, is deflected into the mass of seed to make a slurry. At the same time another portion of the stream with the aid of a second passage travels across the slurry and emerges from an outlet nozzle drawing with it portions of the slurry with its complement of seed. Moistened seed and the accompanying mass of water is ejected and spread over the area to be planted.

  • Patent number: 4896391
Abstract: A self-locking fastener includes an externally threaded fastener element provided with an aperture which is off-center with respect to the axis of the fastener element. Received within the aperture is a locking element which may be of plastic, preferably a polyimide such as VESPEL, for use under high temperature conditions. The aperture is preferably round while the locking element is preferably square, for ease of fabrication, although metal locking elements may be used and the aperture may be of other shapes. The length of the locking element is coordinated and correlated with the major and minor diameters of the fastener such that the end faces of the locking element substantially occupy a significant portion of the valleys between adjacent crests, rather than matching the thread profile, in order to provide effective locking as required by certain designated specifications set forth herein.

  • Patent number: 4889031
Abstract: A linkage is provided between various components within the feed mechanism of an automated gun which allows a feed cover, which includes some of the components of the feed mechanism, to be opened relative to other elements within the feed mechanism in order to allow access or changing of ammunition within the feed mechanism without unlinking the various feed mechanism components. Feed mechanism components within the gun are linked to other feed mechanism components within the rotatable feed cover by means of a ball and bracket combination. The feed cover rotates about a pivot pin on a predetermined axis. The bracket, through which the motive power supplied to the components of the feed mechanism and the feed cover is disposed to lie on and is rotatable about the predetermined axis defined by the pivot pin.

  • Patent number: 4870347
Abstract: A universal breakout unit is provided whereby aircraft circuits or systems may be accessed and tested regardless of the design differences between the various aircraft systems. The universal breakout unit comprises an array of associated pairs of input and output jacks which are disposed on a face panel of the breakout unit. Each input jack of each associated pair is uniformly wired to a connection with one or more input connectors. Similarly, each one of the output jacks of the associated pairs is wired to one connection within one or more output connectors. The input and output jacks are selectively coupled to each other through a manual toggle switch. A specially wired harness, corresponding to each specific aircraft circuit, is provided for connection to the input connector or output connector.

  • Patent number: 4867308
Abstract: A composite tape for the storage and delivery of very small electronic components makes use of a carrier strip with pockets for containment of individual components and a cover strip. The cover strip extends over all the pockets to hold the components in the pockets until needed. Sprocket holes extend along the side of the carrier strip and are used for reeling up long composite tapes when loaded and for unreeling when components are to be removed. At the time of removal two take-up reels are used. One of the take-up reels pulls the cover strip away from the carrier strip to uncover the pockets. The other take-up reel progressively rolls up the carrier strip after the components have been lifted from the pockets. Various expedients are used for releasably securing the cover strip to the carrier strip.

  • Patent number: 4863203
Abstract: A mechanical seal for closing the gap between adjacent ends of rigid tubes which must remain in fixed position makes use of two complementary semicylindrical shells, each of which carries a molded sealing gasket provided with a recess adapted to fit around the tubes and around the space between them. A clamp attached to one shell has opposite ends which reach around corresponding protuberances on the other shell. The clamp operates to draw the shells and the molded sealing gaskets into sealing engagement with the rigid tube ends and with each other, thereby to close the gap with a dependable, replaceable seal.

  • Patent number: 4841817
Abstract: A lock collar for a drill bushing and a system for cooling a drill bit during a drilling operation are arranged so as to be incorporated into a single mechanism. The mechanism involves two assemblies, one being a locking liner embedded in a jig plate, and the other being a coolant directing assembly adapted to be mounted on a power-fed tool. There is coolant passage means in the coolant directing assembly which accepts coolant from an appropriate source and directs it through the first mentioned assembly to the cutting edge of the drill bit or other cutting tool while the cutting operation is taking place. By reverse rotation of the coolant directing assembly, that assembly can then be removed for subsequent engagement with another locking liner. Various structures and methods of manufacture are employed for forming the coolant passage means.

  • Patent number: 4836939
Abstract: A stable aqueous foam concentrate for use in the generation of a stable aqueous foam having an expansion ratio of between 10:1 to as high as 1000:1 or more includes an anionic surfactant material of a chain length of between C12 to C14, a glycol or mixtures thereof, a fatty alcohol of between C12 and C14 chain length and a copolymer of maleic anhydride. The components, other than the polymer are mixed to form a micellar structure and the polyer is then added to react with at least one of the components of at least some of the micelles. Upon foam formation, the polymer which is covalently bound operates to reduce the water drainage rate to increase the foam stability, the foam being biodegradable.

  • Patent number: 4829994
Abstract: An improved femoral aterial or venous compressive device is comprised of a flexible pelvic apron positioned over the femoral vessels within the human pelvis. The pelvic apron is placed in position by means of a hip strap. The hip straps are led from the pelvic apron upwardly over the hip points, around the small of the back and down over the opposing hip point back to the pelvic apron. The pelvic apron thus hangs from the hip points of the pelvis much like an apron. A shaped mass or pellet is attached to the under side of the pelvic apron over the incision site of the femoral vessel. An elastically extensible groin strap is then attached to the pelvic apron in the proximity of the shaped mass and drawn tightly through the groin, around the back of the leg, under the buttocks and back upwardly to the pelvic apron in the proximity of the shaped mass. As a result, the tensile force is applied by the groin strap across the pelvic apron up to the hip point and also around the leg.

  • Patent number: 4828403
Abstract: A fluid bearing assembly, e.g., air or gas, of the hydrostatic or hydrodynamic type, for use as a spindle and the like, includes spaced journals mounted on a shaft for rotation therewith. The housing includes spaced support bearings cooperating with the journals to form a gas gap therebetween. The support bearings are resiliently mounted in the housing for axial, radial and angular movement through the use of continuous resilient support elements positioned between the housing and the support bearings and continuously in contact with each. The resilient support elements are preferably self-energizing and comprised of relatively low coefficient of friction materials to reduce the friction of the system thus allowing rapid adjustment of the bearing in response to loads on the shaft. Various details are described with respect to the various structures illustrated, including the details of an air bearing spindle assembly of relatively light weight and capable of operating at speeds in excess of 100,000 RPM.
