  • Patent number: 5723301
Abstract: GAPDH binds to expanded polyglutamine regions which are found in proteins encoded by genes with CAG repeat domains, which genes cause inherited neurodegenerative disorders and are associated with certain psychiatric disorders. Therapeutic methods are based on inhibiting the binding of GAPDH to expanded polyglutamine regions. A method of screening compounds for the ability to inhibit binding of GAPDH to polyglutamine regions is described.

  • Patent number: 5720153
Abstract: The present invention relates mainly to a wrapping method and to apparatus for implementing the method. The invention provides a method of wrapping a palletized load, the method comprising a step of depositing one or more plastic films around the palletized load, thereby covering the palletized load and closing the inlets to the pallet, the method including a step that consists in disengaging permanent passages in the film where it obstructs the inlets of the pallet for passing the forks of handling equipment. The present invention is particularly applicable to wrapping palletized loads. A main application of the present invention lies in wrapping loads that are palletized on standard pallets.

  • Patent number: 5715737
Abstract: An apparatus for trimming multiple-sheet, folded printed products utilizing two processing drums adjacently arranged. The drums are each rotated about a horizontal axis by a drive mechanism. Each processing drum comprises radial compartments for receiving the printed products to be trimmed. Arranged on each end side of the first processing drum are two stationary cutting elements, one of which is in the operative position. The cutting element interacts with cutting elements which are fastened on the end side of the compartments on the compartment walls. In the first processing drum, the printed products are trimmed on their side borders running at right angles to the folding edge. Arranged on the circumferential edge of the second processing drum are stationary cutting elements with a cutting element in an operative position to interact with cutting elements which are assigned to the individual compartments and are arranged circumferentially in the compartments.

  • Patent number: 5713694
Abstract: A resilient and flexible base for a two-piece traffic channelizer is provided that does not require external ballasting to stabilize the channelizer against wind forces and vacuum forces created by passing vehicles and minor impacts from a vehicle. The base is formed of a hardenable liquid resin such that the base is resilient and flexible after curing and has a specific gravity greater than about 1.25. The base further includes at least one flexible footpad for generating a restoring moment when the channelizer is subjected to a tipping force, such as a minor impact. The composition of the liquid resin includes at least one off-grade polyvinylchloride (PVC) resin, a plasticizer and a specific gravity increasing agent. A method is also provided for forming the base by slush molding at least a portion of the hardenable liquid resin adjacent the interior surface of a molding cavity. The base formed by the disclosed method is also self-lubricating and resistant to chemical degradation and extreme temperatures.

  • Patent number: 5712401
Abstract: A process for preparing thioxanthone and derivatives thereof is disclosed. In the process, an aromatic compound, such as cumene, is reacted with thiosalicylic acid (TSA) or dithiosalicylic acid (DTSA) in the presence of sulfuric acid. The reaction mixture, which includes thioxanthone or a derivative thereof, is thereafter distilled under reduced pressure to recover the thioxanthone compound.

  • Patent number: 5701801
Abstract: In a mechanically redundant actuator system, the actuator has a structurally redundant members for attaching it between a stationary anchor point to a movable control surface. Specifically the actuator consists of a cylinder body, a double action piston with a piston rod attached to the control surface at one end and a swivel bar at the other end. Single or multiple tie rods are attached between the swivel bar and the movable control surface. Each tie rod can withstand one half the load of the piston rod. Also, trunnion links attach the cylinder body to the structure. Each trunnion links can withstand the full limit load with or without any load factors. The trunnion fittings can be any configuration that provides a structural reaction, and provides a dual load path and freedom of movement in at least two axes. At least two of these actuator units are required per surface. Also, a dual tandem control valve with a hydraulic compensator for each actuator is required.

  • Patent number: 5697738
Abstract: The spade-type boring bit includes an elongate shank defining a central longitudinal axis and a blade portion joined to one end of the shank. The blade portion includes a pair of generally flat side segments extending laterally from the central longitudinal axis and having a respective forward cutting edge and a respective chamfered corner portion. Each chamfered corner portion includes a chamfered edge which extends both axially rearward and laterally outward from the respective forward cutting edge so as repeatedly cut the peripheral wall of the resulting hole as the spade bit is rotatably advanced through a workpiece. The spade bit therefore produces a high-quality hole having a smooth peripheral wall and relatively clean entry and exit points. In addition, the forward cutting edges of the spade bit can be aligned with each other along a centerline which passes through the central longitudinal axis of the elongate shaft so as to increase the efficiency with which the spade bit drills.
