  • Patent number: 7226743
Abstract: The present invention provides for selection of bovine animals that will display phenotypes associated with increased rates of growth. These phenotypes include hot carcass weight, average daily gain, shipping weight, end of test rib eye area, and adjusted weaning weight which is a measure of post-natal growth, based on the knowledge of their CRH, POMC and MC4R genotypes. The predictive value comes from the discovery that certain single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in these genes are linked to higher growth rate phenotypes. Specifically, the phenotypes that correlated with specific SNP's are end-of-test rib-eye area, adjusted weaning weight, average daily gain, shipping weight and hot carcass weight. The invention also provides novel kits that can be used in making the determination of these genotypes.

  • Patent number: 7182848
Abstract: The present invention provides methods for producing hollow ceramic membranes by electrophoretic deposition. The hollow ceramic membranes may have a small cross-sectional area of about 1.0×10?5 mm2 to about 25 mm2. The cross-sectional configuration of the hollow ceramic membranes may be any geometry such as circular, square, rectangular, triangular or polygonal. The hollow ceramic membranes produced by the methods of the present invention may have multiple layers but always the innermost layer, or the first deposited layer is porous and made by electrophoretic deposition. Subsequent layers may be porous or non porous and deposited before or after sintering the first layer. If it is deposited after sintering, it may require additional sintering steps. Additional layers may be deposited by further electrophoretic deposition, sol-gel coating, dip coating, vacuum casting, brushing, spraying or other known techniques.

  • Patent number: 7174738
Abstract: An apparatus for cooling an electronic device that includes a fluid heat exchanger, a chiller, and a pump. The fluid heat exchanger transfers heat from a hot portion of the surface of the electronic device to a fluid and has a body through which the fluid may be circulated. The body has a protrusion having a first surface that may be thermally coupled to the hot portion such that the surface of the body is sufficiently distant from the surface of the electronic device that sufficient ambient air may circulate therebetween so as to substantially prevent condensation from forming on the surface of the electronic device and from forming on and dripping from the heat exchanger when the fluid is cooled to at least the dew point of the ambient air and circulated through the body. A heat-conducting path is provided from the first surface to a region of the body that is thermally coupled to the fluid when the fluid is circulated through the body.

  • Patent number: 7169495
Abstract: A thermally integrated fuel cell system includes a stack zone, a burner zone and a low temperature zone. The fuel is combined with steam and passed sequentially through a primary reformer and a secondary reformer. Air is split into two parallel streams and preheated in a low temperature heat exchanger. One air stream passes to a high temperature heat exchanger while the other passes to a radiative heat exchanger. The air and fuel streams are equalized in an equalization heat exchanger before entering the fuel cell stacks. The stack exhaust is combusted in an afterburner. Afterburner exhaust heats the primary reformer, the high temperature heat exchanger, the low temperature heat exchanger and steam generator. The stack zone includes the stacks, the secondary reformer, the radiative heat exchanger and the equalization heat exchanger. The burner zone includes the afterburner, the primary reformer and the high temperature heat exchanger.
