  • Patent number: 6025978
Abstract: A composite type thin-film magnetic head. In one embodiment, a substrate is used as a base, and an insulating film, a lower shielding magnetic film, a magneto-resistive element, an upper shielding magnetic film, a magnetic gap film, a recording inductive magnetic film and a protective layer are laminated on this base. An inductive head used for recording is formed by the upper shielding magnetic film. A magnetic gap film, a recording inductive magnetic film, and a magneto-resistive head used for playback are formed by the magneto-resistive element. The upper shielding magnetic film and recording inductive magnetic film are formed by an electroplating of permalloy. The upper shielding magnetic film has a lower nickel concentration on the side of the magnetic gap film than on the side of the magneto-resistive element.

  • Patent number: 5991807
Abstract: A method of managing access to a distributive network provides both time and site access restraints for users or groups of users on a LAN or WAN adapted for accessing the network through a common network access interface system. The method utilizes the LAN server to develop and monitor the constraints, minimizing the utilization of the access interface system. The management parameters for each group or individual having access to the distributive network via the LAN or WAN is entered into the interface box by the administrator as a compact reference, a series of pointers to the larger database of users and groups stored in the existing LAN server directory services. The existing database of users and groups and their relationships exist already in the LAN servers as a normal consequence of LAN operation and a simple, graphical user interface in the preferred embodiment of the invention permits familiar selection of objects of that database and assignment of access constraints.

  • Patent number: 5986451
Abstract: A method and apparatus for loading and unloading a slider onto the surface of a substrate. The present invention includes a suspension assembly that supports a slider having an air bearing surface. The suspension assembly is coupled to a guide rod that is biased toward a first, second and third bearing. The guide rod remains in continuous contact with at least two bearings. Movement of the slider toward or away from the substrate surface is accomplished by changing the position of one or more of the bearings. In this manner, a set of pivot points acting upon the guide rod is varied as the slider is rotated toward or away from the disk surface such that the axis of rotation of the slider varies as the slider is rotated toward or away from the substrate surface. The loader is also configured to minimize the lateral movement of the slider along the surface of the substrate as the slider is loaded or unloaded from the substrate surface.

  • Patent number: 5929624
Abstract: A method of detecting the presence of an electric cable, the electric cable including conductive armoring and a conductive core that is electrically insulated from the armoring. In the method, the armoring is connected to ground, and a current pulse is emitted over the armoring by way of a current injector device connected to ground so that the return of the pulse to the injector device takes place via ground. The presence of the electric cable is detected in the proximity of a reception point by detecting, at the point, a signal that is representative of the pulse, by way of a detector.

  • Patent number: 5915034
Abstract: In a pattern processing apparatus, a registration data preparation unit performs two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform of image data of a registration pattern to prepare registration Fourier image data. A collation data preparation unit performs two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform of image data of a collation pattern to prepare collation Fourier image data. A data synthesizing unit synthesizes the registration Fourier image data with the collation Fourier image data, both of which consist of phase and amplitude information, to output first synthesized Fourier image data. An image processing unit performs Fourier transform of the first synthesized Fourier image data to output second synthesized Fourier image data representing intensities of correlation components.

  • Patent number: 5903085
Abstract: A positioner which can move an object such as a magnetic recording head. The positioner includes a housing with an inner opening. The housing is located within a coordinate system that includes an x axis, a y axis and a z axis. An electrical/mechanical transducer is coupled to the inner opening of the housing by at least two flexure joint inserts. Expansion or contraction of the transducer creates a movement of the housing along the x or y axis. The flexure joint inserts allow the transducer to be adjusted within the inner opening during assembly to minimize the out of plane movement of the housing along the z axis.

  • Patent number: 5791805
Abstract: A locking device for a pair of telescoping tubular poles. An engagement member fits to one end of first pole and is slidingly engaged within second pole. A groove of the engagement member engages with a rib in the second pole so the first pole cannot rotate relative to the second pole. First pole also slidingly engages through a clamp which is mounted to the end of the second pole. A cover fits over the clamp. A cam located between the inside wall over engages with a clamping element of the clamp. A lever extends from cam through an opening in the cover. By manipulating the lever the cam can cause the clamping element to clampingly lock the first pole against sliding movement in the second pole.

  • Patent number: 5770958
Abstract: A first partial circuit is formed by grounding the emitter electrode of a first negative differential resistive element, connecting the emitter electrode of a second negative differential resistive element to the collector electrode of the first negative differential resistive element, and connecting a first field-effect transistor in parallel with the first negative differential resistive element. A second partial circuit is formed by grounding the emitter electrode of a third negative differential resistive element, connecting the emitter electrode of a fourth negative differential resistive element to the collector electrode of the third negative differential resistive element, and connecting a second field-effect transistor in parallel with the third negative differential resistive element. An output from the first partial circuit is input to the input of the second partial circuit. The inversion of the output of the second partial circuit is input to the input of the first partial circuit.

  • Patent number: 5715119
Abstract: A crash stop is used for an actuator arm of a hard disk drive. The crash stop includes a base portion that is pivotally connected to a post that separates the magnets of a voice coil motor. Extending from the base portion is a tab portion that can be rotated between a first position and a second position. When in the second position the tab limits the movement of the actuator arm so that the sliders of the disk drive cannot move off of the disks. The actuator arm, voice coil motor and crash stop can be installed by initially placing the crash stop in the first position and orienting the actuator arm in an off disk position. The actuator arm and voice coil motor are then mounted to a base plate of the disk drive. The actuator arm is rotated to load the magnetic heads onto the disks of the disk drive. The crash stop is then rotated to the second position and a cover is subsequently attached to the base plate to enclose the assembly.

  • Patent number: 4958378
Abstract: A method and apparatus which provides for the real time comparison of raster data. The raster data is stored in memory such that raster data corresponding to a specific X-Y coordinate location is consistently written to the same memory location. During the process of storing the data in memory, the data currently stored in the memory is read and compared to the data to be written into the same location in memory. If the data is not the same, the discrepancy and location of the discrepancy is noted in a separate area of memory to be used for subsequent analysis and the data to be written to that location is immediately written into the memory. The method and apparatus of the present invention is particularly applicable to the video graphics environment wherein the current bit of raster image contained in the frame buffer is compared to the updated raster image and the data changes are noted on a pixel by pixel basis.
