  • Patent number: 8352232
Abstract: Disclosed are apparatus, methods and software that implement a partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method having global basis functions on cylindrical coordinates to determine wide-band resistance, inductance, capacitance, and conductance from a large number of three-dimensional interconnections in order to provide for the electrical design of system-in-package (SIP) modules, and the like. The apparatus, methods and software use a modal equivalent network from mixed potential integral equation with cylindrical conduction and accumulation mode basis functions, which reduces the matrix size for large three-dimensional interconnection problems. Combined with these modal basis functions, the mixed potential integral equations describe arbitrary skin and proximity effects, and allow determination of partial impedance and admittance values. Additional enhancement schemes further reduces the cost for computing the partial inductances.

  • Patent number: 8344782
Abstract: A delay circuit receives a data input having an input transition and that generates a data output having an output transition. The delay circuit is powered by a voltage source having a voltage. A first delay element is configured to generate a first data signal with a first edge that has a relatively constant delay relative to the input transition irrespective of the voltage of the voltage source. A second delay element is configured to generate a second data signal with a second edge that has a delay relative to the input transition as a function of the voltage of the voltage source. A selection element causes the output transition at the data output to correspond to a latest selected one of the first edge and the second edge. The delay circuit may be employed in a pulse generating circuit.

  • Patent number: 8339404
Abstract: A method, executable on a digital computer that includes a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU), executes a series of instructions, in which a GPU data type is defined and at least one data unit is designated with the GPU data type. A series of instructions is executed on the central processing unit. The method determines that a first unit of instruction code, included in the series of instructions, will be scheduled to operate on a GPU data type-designated data unit within a predetermined number of cycles. The GPU data type-designated data unit is caused to be operated on by a second unit of instruction code, that functionally corresponds to the first unit of instruction code. The second unit of instruction code is executed on the graphics processing unit.

  • Patent number: 8334133
Abstract: In method of injecting a substance into a living cell having a cell membrane, the substance, the cell and a liquid are placed into a tapering passage. Energy is applied to the cell, thereby inducing poration. To sort cells, a cellular suspension is placed in a tapering passage, including a narrow end that defines an opening that has a dimension corresponding to a cell size. An acoustic wave is applied, thereby forcing cells having a cell size smaller than the selected cell size through the opening, with a portion of the cells having a cell size not smaller than the selected cell size not forced through the opening. To extract material from a cell, an electric field and an acoustic wave are applied, thereby causing the cell membrane to allow the material to pass out of the cell.

  • Patent number: 8330154
Abstract: An electrical generator includes a substrate, a semiconductor piezoelectric structure having a first end and an opposite second end disposed adjacent to the substrate, a first conductive contact and a second conductive contact. The structure bends when a force is applied adjacent to the first end, thereby causing an electrical potential difference to exist between a first side and a second side of the structure. The first conductive contact is in electrical communication with the first end and includes a material that creates a Schottky barrier between a portion of the first end of the structure and the first conductive contact. The first conductive contact is also disposed relative to the structure in a position so that the Schottky barrier is forward biased when the structure is deformed, thereby allowing current to flow from the first conductive contact into the first end.

  • Patent number: 8321959
Abstract: An atomic force microscopy sensor includes a substrate, a cantilever beam and an electrostatic actuator. The cantilever beam has a proximal end and an opposite distal end. The proximal end is in a fixed relationship with the substrate and the cantilever beam is configured so that the distal end is in a moveable relationship with respect to the substrate. The electrostatic actuator includes a first electrode that is coupled to the cantilever beam adjacent to the proximal end and a spaced apart second electrode that is in a fixed relationship with the substrate. When an electrical potential is applied between the first electrode and the second electrode, the first electrode is drawn to the second electrode, thereby causing the distal end of the cantilever beam to move.

  • Patent number: 8286483
Abstract: A multiphase-liquid level sensing system for sensing a layer depth and thickness of a liquid of a first phase that floats on a liquid of a different second phase includes an elongated stem that defines an elongated cavity. A float, which exhibits a sensible property, is disposed coaxially around the elongated stem and has negative buoyancy relative to the liquid of the first phase and positive buoyancy relative to the liquid of the second phase. A level sensor senses the sensible property and indicates a second phase liquid distance from the float to the bottom of the stem. An overburden sensor extends downwardly from the stem senses total liquid thickness of the liquid above the overburden sensor. A computational circuit calculates a layer depth and thickness of the liquid of the first phase, based on input from the level sensor and the overburden sensor.
