  • Patent number: 5386195
Abstract: A method and apparatus for monitoring an electrical property of a conductive coating on an optical fiber, the method comprising capacitively coupling at least one alternating electrical signal into and out of the conductive coating and measuring an electrical property of the coating carrying the alternating electrical signal. The apparatus comprises generating means for generating an alternating electrical signal; capacitive coupling means for capacitively coupling the alternating electrical signal into and out of the conductive coating, the capacitive coupling means being electrically connected to the generating means; and measuring means for measuring an electrical property of the conductive coating carrying the alternating electrical signal, the measuring means being electrically connected to the capacitive coupling means. A method of manufacturing coated optical fiber which incorporates the method of monitoring an electrical property of a conductive coating is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5373620
Abstract: A method for sealing a porous membrane constructed, at least in part, of a PTFE based material to a support gasket constructed, at least in part, of a PTFE based material. The method includes providing such a PTFE porous membrane of a preselected shape and size and providing such a PTFE support gasket of a preselected shape and size. The method further includes positioning the membrane and the support gasket in a predetermined appositional relationship within a press. The press includes a press tool of a predetermined configuration and size. The method then includes sealing the membrane and support gasket together at a common seal-zone by pressing the press tool against the membrane and the support gasket with the pressing means at a predetermined pressure for a predetermined dwell to form the membrane/gasket assembly. The method lastly includes removing the membrane/gasket from the pressing means.

  • Patent number: 5272084
Abstract: The disclosed invention relates generally to laboratory ware, and specifically to laboratory ware and method for cultivating biological cell cultures within the laboratory ware. Cell culture vessels are disclosed providing enhanced cell yields for epithelial-like cell lines, and a more in-vivo like cell growing environment for fibroblast-like cell lines. A representative flask and dish including a plurality of grooves, or valleys, residing between ridges substantially covering the interior of preferably the bottom wall of the flask and dish is disclosed. The preferred ridges have a radius between 0.1 and 0.5 millimeters and range from 0.2 to 2.0 millimeters in height, and are spaced apart from each other within the range of 0.2 to 2.5 millimeters.

  • Patent number: 5267791
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to laboratory apparatus and more particularly to disposable suspended magnetic stirrers. An apparatus having a stirring vessel closure and a stirring vessel is disclosed. The stirring vessel closure includes a suspended magnetic impeller, the elevation of which is adjustable by a moveable bearing. The invention is particularly suitable for applications in which solids must be suspended in a liquid medium with a minimum of shear forces, such as in the suspension of tissue cell cultures in a growing medium. The disclosed stirring vessel closure has inclined access ports to allow improved pipette accessibility to the interior of the stirring vessel while also providing improved close packing of stirring vessels during usage or storage.

  • Patent number: 5268150
Abstract: A concentrator/extractor apparatus for employing solvent to extract a substance from a sample in order to increase the concentration of the substance in less time than prior art apparatuses is disclosed. The disclosed apparatus, and kits including the disclosed apparatus and compatabile components, is provided with a sample containing body in which a hydrophobic membrane is utilized to prevent the sample liquid from migrating to the concentrator portion of the combination extractor/concentrator apparatus. Solvents having densities greater than, or lower than, the sample may be used to process such samples by the disclosed apparatus.
