Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing, in a computer system, design of a software system. Various embodiments include receiving an input to the computer system specifying dependency relationships among subsystems of the software system and providing an output from the computer system responsive to the input. A rule is imposed on at least one of the dependency relationships and data for the rule is provided as part of the input.

Abstract: A scalable technology for purifying ethanol, wherein the vaporization of ethanol is coupled with a chromatographic rectification process comprising feeding a vaporized ethanol/water mix onto a plurality of molecular sieve beds to produce dehydrated ethanol vapor, which can then be condensed to recover purified dehydrated ethanol liquid. The scalable technology process is suitable for farm-scale production of fuel-grade ethanol, having the added benefit of allowing wet distillers grains to be used on-site as live-stock feed. By reducing energy requirements, costs and pollution, the output can be scaled to produce fuel-grade ethanol at quantities of anywhere from about 1000 gallons per year to upwards of hundreds of millions of gallons per year. Particularly beneficial versions utilize a plurality of smaller molecular sieve beds in series and use heat generated during desorption and regeneration of the molecular sieve beds as an energy source to aid in the vaporization step.
Abstract: A switched file system, also termed a file switch, is logically positioned between client computers and file servers in a computer network. The file switch distributes user files among multiple file servers using aggregated file, transaction and directory mechanisms. The file switch ensures consistent and atomic behavior of the switched file system by aggregating in a deterministic way the transactions initiated by the client of multiple independent file switches so that only one of the multiple concurrent transactions attempted on the same aggregated data file may succeed, or so that the transactions are serialized so as to be performed as a sequence of atomic operations. In addition, the integrity of the aggregated data file is safeguarded by issuing locking requests on behalf of certain client applications that do not observe locking mechanism consistently.
Abstract: One embodiment of the invention is a system and method for creating cooperation and gracious professionalism during a competition. According to one embodiment of the invention, a first participating player, team, or alliance is motivated to cooperate with a second participating player, team, or alliance by rewarding the first participating player, team, or alliance for assisting the second participating player, team, or alliance to achieve a higher score than might otherwise have been the attainable. One particular embodiment of this invention is to award the first participating player, team, or alliance that obtained the highest number of points during competition with a score comprised of the number of points obtained by the first participating player, team, or alliance plus twice the number of points obtained by the second participating player, team, or alliance.
Abstract: A network-attached system, device, and method supports multiple storage tiers. Data may be migrated between storage tiers, for example, based on a data migration policy. A plurality of dedicated storage devices that provide a plurality of storage tiers having different characteristics are managed using a disk control protocol and data is migrated between storage tiers based on predetermined storage criteria.

Abstract: A system and methods are provided for imaging an object, based on activating an array of discrete X-ray sources in a prescribed temporal pattern so as to illuminate the object with a beam varying in spatial orientation, and detecting X-rays of the beam after interaction with the object and generating a detector signal. An image of the object may then be constructed on the basis of the time variation of the detector signal. The discrete X-ray sources may be moved during the course of inspection, moreover, the prescribed temporal pattern may constitute a Hadamard code. The discrete sources may be carbon nanotube x-ray sources.

Abstract: One or more micromachined (MEMS) switches switch attenuators, such as resistors, into or out of a signal path, such as of a test instrument. The MEMS switches can be fabricated on the same substrate as the attenuators, or the switches or attenuators can be mounted on the same substrate as the others are fabricated. An instrument probe includes attenuators and MEMS switches that are controlled by the instrument and/or by a control circuit in the probe. Optionally, the probe includes reactive elements, such as capacitors, and MEMS switches to compensate for electrical characteristics of the probe and/or probe lead, and the probe or a test instrument automatically sets the MEMS switches to connect appropriate ones of the reactive elements to a signal path within the probe.
Abstract: CD storage device is disclosed which includes a housing (12) in which a carousel (40) is supported for rotation in the housing. The carousel has a number compartments (85) each for storing a CD. The device includes a controlling circuit board (46) which can couple with a computer so that CDs can be stored and retrieved by inputting information into the computer which causes the carousel to rotate to present the storage compartment having the required CD at an opening for discharge. The device (10) includes an ejector (96) for ejecting CDs from a storage compartment (85). The storage device (10) may include a reader (210) into which CDs can be loaded for reading and then restored in the device so that the CDs can be used without the user needing to remove a CD from the device and locate it in a reader in the user's computer.
Abstract: An inspection system based upon an imaging enclosure characterized by an enclosing body, or skin. A source of penetrating radiation and a spatial modulator for forming the penetrating radiation into a beam, are both concealed entirely within the body of an enclosure such as a shipping container for convenient operational deployment. Multiple modules, such as for providing power and for enclosing an operator console may be coupled to the imaging enclosure. An image is formed of the contents of the object based in part on the scatter signal and the relative motion signal. A detector, which may be separate or part of the scatter detector module, may exhibit sensitivity to decay products of radioactive material.

Abstract: A technique for improving the recognition accuracy of a speech recognizer includes deploying the speech recognizer, wherein live input data is received by the recognizer as an input for a given speaker independent adaptation algorithm associated with the speech recognizer. The algorithm enhances the accuracy of the speech recognizer without human supervision. This technique is particularly suitable for adapting a large vocabulary ASR engine.

Abstract: A method of forming a MEMS device provides a wafer having a base, a first conductive layer, a second conductive layer, and an intermediate conductive layer. After it provides the wafer, the method removes at least a portion of the intermediate conductive layer to form a cavity between the first and second conductive layers. At least a portion of the first conductive layer is movable relative to the base to form a diaphragm, while the second conductive layer is substantially immovable relative to the base. After it forms the cavity, the method seals the cavity.

Abstract: A sailcloth in roll good form permits efficient and cost effective construction of cross cut and vertical cut, laminate sails based on “off-angle,” (assymetrical) load bearing fibers. The sailcloth also may include a conventional warp and fill thread or fiber layout. Such sailcloth illustratively is significantly less susceptible to load force stretch, creep elongation, and airfoil shape deformation because, among other things, it is not dependent on the load bearing limitations of symmetrical, woven or knitted roll good sailcloth.

Abstract: An integrated circuit for automatic calibration control of pin electronics is disclosed. The integrated circuit includes a substrate, and both pin electronics and a calibration circuit integral with the substrate. The calibration circuit is dedicated to a single channel of automatic testing equipment for a single pin of a device under test. Each sub-circuit of the pin electronics may include a replica output. The replica output is electrically coupled to the calibration circuit. The calibration circuit may include a multiplexor for receiving each of the replica outputs from the sub-circuits, such as a comparator, load and a driver, and for selectively switching between the replica outputs to determine calibration parameters for one or more levels of the sub-circuit. The calibration circuit includes a state machine capable of determining calibration parameters including offset and gain.
Abstract: A method for viewing a first object that is obstructed by a second object. In such a method, the first object has a contrasting color to the second object and the second object is constructed from a material that allows visible light to pass therethrough. The amount of visible light that passes through the second object is not enough such that the first object is visible to the human eye. The method involves taking a digital image of the first and second object using a visible light sensor, such as a CCD camera sensor. The digital image data that is received into a computer system contains both first object data and second object data. It should be understood that the first object data and the second object data include color information. The amount of contrast between the first and the second object should be approximately 10% of the total scale such that on a 256 color scale the difference is approximately 25 levels.
