Patent number: 5239291Abstract: A dual element ferrule fuse includes a short circuit element and an overload element. The overload element includes a heater element which, in addition to carrying heat, is designed to partially enclose the overload element with tabs that provide a weldable surface between the element and the metallic end cap, thus eliminating the need for a separate washer. Additionally, the tabs serve to center the element in the end cap and retain the element at a certain point in the fuse body between assembly of the fuse and soldering of the cap to the weldable surface.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1992Date of Patent: August 24, 1993Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Michael C. Henricks, Robert S. Douglass

Patent number: 5235306Abstract: The improved fuse assembly includes a trigger assembly having an electrically nonconductive barrel for receiving a spring loaded trigger therein and a heater strip disposed along the outer circumferential surface of the barrel with a pair of end flaps. One end flap has a hole therethrough which fits over the end of the trigger adjacent the short circuit element. A second flap fits over the end of the barrel adjacent the end ferrule. The short circuit element, which is electrically and mechanically linked to a ferrule on the opposite end of the tube from the trigger assembly, engages the trigger and heater element in a solder fusing alloy.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1992Date of Patent: August 10, 1993Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Varinder K. Kalra, Vernon R. Spaunhorst, Keith A. Spalding

Patent number: 5224715Abstract: An improved metal-to-metal seal of a generally U shaped configuration which utilizes an enlarged seal portion on the interior and exterior of the inner and outer seal legs to effect an initial seal. The initial interference of the seal legs is maintained by disposing a solid support ring in the annulus between the seal legs with holes in the support ring to prevent pressure lock and to balance pressure distribution within the seal. The invention is shown in a unidirectional form with a single pair of seal legs extending axially from an annular base and in a bidirectional form with a pair of seal legs extending axially in both directions from an annular base. An alternative form of the invention discloses a support member of U shaped configuration which allows greater flexibility in the seal legs while maintaining initial sealing contact. This support member also has holes to prevent pressure lock and to balance pressure distribution within the seal.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1992Date of Patent: July 6, 1993Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Stephen Downes, David Gill

Patent number: 5198792Abstract: A miniature electrical fuse has electrical lead wires (8) to permit the fuse to be connected into a circuit without use of a fuse holder. Wires (8) are resistance welded to electrically conductive end caps (4) closing off the end of a non-conductive tubular housing (3) containing a fusible element (1). Element (1) is connected to the caps (4) by solder joints (7) and caps (4) are connected to housing (3) by solder joints (6). The solder is a lead/tin alloy of high melting point. The end walls of the caps (4) are comparatively thick in relation to their side walls in the range 1.3 to 1 and 2.1 to 1.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1992Date of Patent: March 30, 1993Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Martin D. Bacon, Peter J. Drayton, Rognvald R. Peterson

Patent number: 5187404Abstract: An improved low voltage igniter of the type having an annular spark gap between a center electrode and annular ground electrode which is arranged coaxial with the center electrode. The spark gap is shunted by an insulator surface. Semiconducting material is deposited on the insulator surface as one or more rings which are coaxial with and spaced from the electrodes. The semiconducting rings reduce the voltage required to initiate a spark across the spark gap.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1991Date of Patent: February 16, 1993Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventor: Stephen W. Straub

Patent number: 5172772Abstract: This invention relates to a rotary impulse screwing device which generates only one pulse per rotation of the output shaft. Two main and two additional lamellas are adjustably positioned in the output shaft. The two main lamellas seal at a minimum of two times per rotation of the output shaft. The two additional lamellas are adjusted independently via separate recess tracks to ensure that each additional lamella seals at only one point per rotation of the output shaft. The independently articulated additional lamellas further ensure that the load on the output shaft bearing is symmetrical on non-impulse points of rotation.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1991Date of Patent: December 22, 1992Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Konrad K. Kettner, Heinz-Gerhard Anders

Patent number: 5161828Abstract: A break-away flowline fitting for protecting a subsea Christmas tree to which the flowlines are connected when the flowlines are subjected to an externally applied axial load and/or bending moment. The fitting comprises a tubular member having a reduced wall thickness section integrally formed in the member and designed to part or separate axially at an externally applied load less than what would be necessary to harm the tree. A clamp closely surrounds the reduced wall thickness section and limits the pressure induced hoop membrane stress in the reduced wall thickness section to about the same value as in the adjacent normally configured fitting portions, thereby maintaining the pressure integrity of the fitting. A frame having supports disposed on the normally configured fitting portions and axially beyond each end of the reduced wall thickness section has removable reinforcing members which span the reduced wall thickness section prior to placing the fitting in service.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1991Date of Patent: November 10, 1992Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Joseph H. Hynes, James H. Owens, III

Patent number: 5135404Abstract: An insulating liner for an electrical plug which fits between the plug body and the plug assembly when conductors are located. The liner rotates within the plug body and is retained in the plug body by a tab and groove.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1991Date of Patent: August 4, 1992Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventor: William E.
