Patent number: 6799638Abstract: A running tool for wiper plugs used in cementing well casings into a wellbore. The running tool and setting balls or darts used to launch the plugs are retrievable following deployment of the plugs. Flapper valve assemblies on the wiper plugs are activated after the plugs are displaced from the running tool to eliminate the requirement to maintain a setting ball or dart in engagement with the wiper plug as the assembly is pumped down the well casing. Because of being retrievable, the mandrel, setting sleeves and setting ball or dart may be constructed of any desirable high-strength material without regard to the need to drill up the material following completion of the cementing job. The use of high-strength steel permits large flow passages to be employed in the cementing plugs by eliminating the need for large volumes of drillable metals in the plugs. The running tool protects the flapper valve seal surfaces from circulating fluids prior to deployment of the plugs from the tool.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2002Date of Patent: October 5, 2004Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventor: Charles A. Patent number: 6609735Abstract: Threaded and coupled pipe connections are provided with a number of design features that increase resistance of the connection to fatigue failure from cyclical side loading. The features acting alone or in combination include the provision of a pin thread that is formed along a single taper and that vanishes at the surface of the pipe. The coupling engages the pin such that the threaded area of the coupling engages all of the pin threads and extends beyond the vanish point of the pin threads at the optimum coupling makeup position. The threads of the coupling and pipe may engage along both the stab and load flanks to distribute the side loading. The external surface of the coupling may be tapered from the center toward each coupling end to reduce the stiffness ratio of the connection, and the ends or faces of the coupling may be reduced in radial thickness to prevent coupling splitting.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1999Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignee: Grant Prideco, L.P.Inventors: Richard W. Patent number: 6585044Abstract: A novel method, system and tool for performing formation and well evaluation while drilling are disclosed. These inventions determine the properties of a particular formation within a reservoir as the reservoir is being intersected during well construction. In one form of the invention, the formation evaluation is made using a direct measurement of the formation's ability to flow fluids. The flow potential of a reservoir during underbalanced well construction is determined as the well is being constructed. The methods produce an understanding of the volumes and types of fluids such as oil, gas, and/or water, that can be produced out of discrete sections of a formation within a reservoir as the reservoir is intersected.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 2001Date of Patent: July 1, 2003Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventors: Stephen Rester, James L. Patent number: 6581980Abstract: The surface areas available for absorbing compressive loading of a threaded connection are increased by increasing the engaged area of a torque shoulder in the connection and by reducing the spacing between the stab flanks of the threads. The areas are increased by increasing the dimensions of the components and by decreasing the machine tolerances permitted in manufacturing the components. The gap in the connection adjacent the torque shoulder is reduced so that the contact surface area of the torque shoulder is increased while the close proximity of the surrounding cylindrical walls of the connection reduces voids that can receive plastic deformation of the torque shoulder corners. The surfaces adjacent the torque shoulder are cylindrical in shape rather than being tapered to reduce machining costs and increase the speed of manufacture of the connection.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2000Date of Patent: June 24, 2003Assignee: Grant Prideco, L.P.Inventors: Richard W. Patent number: 6571876Abstract: A tubular tool body carried at the end of a drilling rig top drive is received within a drill string being used as a landing string to position casing in a wellbore. External threads on the tool body can be mated with the box threads of the drill string to secure the top drive and drill string together for simultaneous drill string movement and fluid circulation. An annular seal carried about the tool body engages and seals with the internal wall of the drill pipe to prevent drilling fluid leakage when the tool body is received within the drill pipe without thread engagement. The tool has an internal check valve that opens to allow back flow of drilling fluid that may be displaced from the drill pipe as the pipe is lowered into the well. The check valve prevents standing fluid in the top drive from spilling onto the rig floor when the tool is withdrawn from the drill string.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2001Date of Patent: June 3, 2003Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventor: David D. Patent number: 6571180Abstract: A self-contained system to continuously monitor a mechanism used to process, control or regulate fluid flow or pressure and provide a continuing indication of the status or condition of the monitored mechanism. A specific form of the invention employs a low frequency sonic-to-electrical transducer that monitors opening and closing of a disk-type steam trap. The detected sonic signal is processed and sent to a microprocessor that is programmed to develop a time-based, baseline data set representative of normal operation of the steam trap in the environment in which it operates. The baseline data set is compared with the data from on-line operations of the steam trap. As the environment and the steam trap operation change during normal on-line operations, the baseline data set is updated to change with the changing environment and the changing steam trap operation.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1997Date of Patent: May 27, 2003Assignee: Keystone International Holding Corp.Inventors: John M. Patent number: 6568491Abstract: A graphite or silicate plug is coated with a refractory metal and positioned in the cutter pocket of a steel bodied bit as molten hardfacing material is applied to the bit surface under high temperature conditions. The refractory metal cooperates with the hardfacing material to act as a wetting agent that draws the hardfacing material into intimate contact with the body of the displacement plug. The plug is removed leaving a composite pocket opening formed by the steel body and the hardfacing material. A PDC cutter inserted into the composite pocket opening closely adheres to the sides of the opening to reduce the gap between the cutter and the hardfacing material to hereby minimize the effects of erosion in the area of the gap. The wetting material on the displacement plug permits the hardfacing material to flow into and remain in position immediately adjacent the displacement body and in the small surface area between adjacent cutter pockets.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2001Date of Patent: May 27, 2003Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventors: Oliver Matthews, III, David P. Patent number: 6467818Abstract: The roots of the box threads in a drill collar or heavyweight drill pipe are configured to reduce the connection stresses encountered during drilling and makeup of the connection. The thread root design in the box reduces fatigue damage caused by makeup torque and cyclic stressing of the engaged drill string connection as it is rotated around curved sections of the well bore. A conventional V-type thread form in the box is provided with an enlarged root radius having its center point offset from the centerline of the opposing thread flanks. The load flank of the thread tangentially engages the arc of the root. The stab flank of the thread is intersected by the enlarged root radius extending to a flat intersecting surface that may extend as far up as the thread pitch diameter.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2000Date of Patent: October 22, 2002Assignee: Grant Prideco, L.P.Inventors: Douglas V. Patent number: 6457720Abstract: A shaft extending from a housing is rotatably sealed with the housing using a split seal assembly. During installation of the assembly, an alignment pin on one half of the assembly engages an oblong recess with planar sides in the other half of the assembly to permit radial movement of the two halves toward each other while preventing relative axial movement between the two halves. The permitted radial movement facilitates the assembly of the seal to the shaft while the limitation on relative axial movement maintains the correct positions, of the two halves. The permitted radial movement allows the two halves to assume fill circular engagement with the shaft to optimize the seal and the mechanical engagement with the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2000Date of Patent: October 1, 2002Assignee: Utex Industries, Inc.Inventor: Michael A. Patent number: 6457526Abstract: The components required for changing out a bottom hole assembly are stored within a submerged storage chamber adjacent the lower end of a riser extending up from the bottom of a body of water. A vertical, revolving magazine holds the bottom hole assembly components within the storage chamber. A pressure lock between the storage chamber and the interior of the riser is opened to permit the bottom hole assembly components in the chamber to be exchanged with those forming the drilling string assembly within the riser. The storage chamber may be selectively sealed from the body of water and the internal riser area as the bottom hole assembly components are moved into and out of the chamber. A remotely operated mechanism assembles and disassembles the bottom hole assembly components of the drilling string assembly.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2000Date of Patent: October 1, 2002Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventor: Terry M.
