  • Patent number: 4561360
Abstract: A railway wheel and axle assembly comprises a journal box with spaced wings extending longitudinally of the railway vehicle away from the axle. Springs supported by said wings accommodate relative lateral, longitudinal, vertical, yaw, pitch and roll movement between the vehicle body and the wheel and axle assembly. The wings comprise brackets longitudinally beyond the springs, and the vehicle body comprises a bracket above and laterally of each wing bracket and aligned therewith for attachment of a single axial displacement damper for damping such movement.

  • Patent number: 4552074
Abstract: A railway vehicle truck including side frames and wheel sets maintained in a substantially rectangular relationship by resilient connection means at each of the axle mounts to the side frames. The resilient means are prestressed and in equilibrium at each mounting location so as to resist yaw and lengthwise movement of the axles relative to the side frames. The resilient means provide resistance to hunting motion and yet yieldingly permit relative turning of the axle and side frame when the truck traverses a curved track.

  • Patent number: 4540637
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the application of organic materials, such as powders, to hot dip or electroplated galvanized metal which provides a finished material with a higher level of corrosion resistance than that obtained from organic coatings on mild or black steel. Because of the natural corrosion protection properties of the zinc cladding of galvanized metal, no additional passivation of the substrate is necessary as is required with existing processes on mild or black steel. Also, the invention relates to the hot dip or electroplated galvanized metal which has been pretreated by the process of this invention prior to application of an organic powder coating. Hot dip or electroplated galvanized metal treated by this process leads to a uniform coating which is virtually impervious to acid, basic and salt solutions, and which will not scratch or flake off on impact.

  • Patent number: 4514301
Abstract: A filter apparatus for removing suspended matter from a suspension including a tank for receiving the contaminated liquid and a filtrate chamber. A perforate wall of the filtrate supports an endless and reusable filter media. The filter media is in the form of a closed loop having a run of the loop located outside and below the tank for the convenience of removing suspended solid collected on the media. The media is displaced along the length of the perforate wall to provide a solids free filter area by a movable conveyor. The conveyor serves to displace the media and hold the marginal edges in sealing engagement with edges of the perforate plate to prevent the contaminated liquid from bypassing the filter area.

  • Patent number: 4512901
Abstract: Oil-water mixtures are by-products of a number of known commercial activities such as crude oil production and power plant operation. Disposition of such mixtures in most all cases is prohibited by environmental regulation. Disposition may be effected, however, after separation of the oil from the water. This separation may be accomplished in a deepbed type filter. Where the oil in the water is unusually viscous or has a waxy, tar-like, or sticky consistency, for example, rejuvenation of the filter bed is enhanced by the addition of a small amount of a solvating liquid to the oil-water mixture before filtering.

  • Patent number: 4504441
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of preventing the segregation of powders of different specific gravities in a metal powder composition. The powder metal is admixed with the powders of lesser specific gravities, and furfuryl alcohol is added at the same time. While mixing, an acid is added to react with the furfuryl alcohol to convert the alcohol to a solid resin film on the powder metal particles. The powders of lesser specific gravities are bonded to the metal powder particles by the resin, and segregation of the metal powder and the lighter powders is eliminated.

  • Patent number: 4491075
Abstract: A snubbed railway car truck including a side frame having a bolster opening defined by a pair of columns. A bolster end is disposed in the bolster opening. Resiliently biased friction shoes are provided with friction faces which engage friction faces of wear plates mounted on the columns. Lands are provided on the bolster and the side frame columns along the opposite upstanding edges of the friction plate. The lands are provided with planar stops which engage during permisible relative turning between the side frame and bolster. The lands are inclined relative to the plane of the wear plate friction surface to prevent gouging during relative turning movement of the bolster and side frame.
