Abstract: The present invention is related to the fabrication of electronic devices wherein a thin film of silicon is deposited upon a substrate. More particularly, the invention is directed to such devices wherein the substrate therefor is an alkaline earth metal aluminosilicate glass consisting essentially, by weight, of about 55-75% SiO.sub.2, 5-25% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, and at least one alkaline earth metal oxide selected from the group consisting of 9-15% CaO, 14-20% SrO, 18-26% BaO, and mixtures thereof in a total amount equivalent on a molar basis to 9-15% CaO.

Abstract: High-use-temperature electrical contacts for carbon-containing glasses which include a soft, glass-adherent metal layer in contact with the carbon phase in the glass and a compression electrode positioned over the metal layer which maintains compressive stress between the layer and the glass at temperatures up to and including the contact use temperature are described. Electrical circuit elements comprising one or more of such contacts offer stable electrical performance after repeated cycling to high temperatures.
Abstract: A rapid curing polybutadiene resin system dielectric coating composition suitable for coating electrical components such as thin film resistors is disclosed. This composition cures very rapidly and greatly improves adhesion to the coated article.
Abstract: A multiple mode optical waveguide includes a glass core and a glass cladding around the core. In order to promote coupling between guided modes of light propagation, the core has cylindrical perturbations spaced along its length. The perturbations include index of refraction variations in rings within the core.
Abstract: A quadriplanar capacitor and the method of forming it is disclosed. A capacitor element is disposed within an open ended enclosure and sealed therein, the enclosure forming one capacitor electrode. The open end of the enclosure forms a quadrilateral. A flat electrode member forming the second capacitor electrode is fixedly attached to a lead which itself is rigidly attached to the capacitor element. The flat member is disposed parallel to the enclosure opening and spaced from the enclosure by the lead. The flat member is substantially coextensive with the enclosure opening.
Abstract: An optical waveguide includes a core of high purity fused silica, a cladding of high purity fused silica and a protective coating of metallic glass. The protective coating is applied as a liquid which contracts more than the glass after it solidifies to place the surface of the glass cladding under compression. Because the waveguide will break only under tension, the force of compression must be overcome before the waveguide can be fractured thereby strengthening the waveguide considerably. The metallic glass coating provides further advantages of abrasion protection and the prevention of fatigue.
Abstract: A magnetic recording and storage device having high wear resistance is produced by providing a magnetic recording and storage device having a film of solid magnetic material which has been bonded to a surface of a rigid substrate. A thin film of a lubricating compound is then applied to the film of magnetic material.

Abstract: Bacteria of the genus Neisseria can be detected in a sample by testing for the presence of an enzyme capable of oxidizing 1,2-propanediol and reducing NAD (nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide). The complete structure of the enzyme is not known but, because of those two characterizing properties, the nomenclature 1,2-propanediol dehydrogenase therefor is proposed herein.
Abstract: Alkali boroaluminosilicate glass compositions providing refractive index-corrected copper-cadmium halide photochromic glasses of optical quality, particularly useful for making ophthalmic lenses, are described. Ion-exchange-strengthenable glasses exhibiting good chemical durability and a satisfactory liquidus-viscosity relationship in combination with good photochromic properties and the required refractive index are also provided.
Abstract: This invention is concerned with the use of fluorocarbon and silicone oil greases or gels to stimulate the growth of various microorganisms. More particularly, the instant invention contemplates the addition of a peroxide compound, preferably hydrogen peroxide (H.sub.2 O.sub.2), to fluorocarbon and silicone oil greases or gels to further stimulate the growth of anaerobes and facultative anaerobes in liquid or solid nutrient media.
Abstract: A process for forming a solid tantalum capacitor is disclosed wherein the cathode is manganese dioxide formed by pyrolysis. The pyrolysis is performed in a nitrogen dioxide containing atmosphere at a temperature of between about 170.degree. C. and 250.degree. C., the nitrogen dioxide containing atmosphere comprising at least about 10% by volume of nitrogen dioxide, the remainder of said atmosphere being water vapor and gas inert in the pyrolysis process.

Abstract: An optical waveguide having variations in diameter is produced by controlling the drawing rollers. Predetermined diameter variations along the length of an optical waveguide reduce dispersion in multimode waveguides. These diameter variations are produced by varying the rotational speed of the pulling rollers, by varying the diameter of the pulling rollers, by moving the pulling rollers axially or by moving a tensioning roller during the drawing process.
Abstract: In a multimode optical waveguide, coupling is promoted among guided modes while coupling to unguided modes is suppressed. The core includes perturbations having a power spectrum which decreases with increasing mode order and which has a plurality of minima. The length of each perturbation is such that a minimum in the power spectrum of the perturbation occurs at the critical frequency .omega..sub.c and the power spectrum is significantly reduced for high frequencies.
Abstract: This invention is concerned with the preparation of glass articles containing silver ions which exhibit thermoplastic properties and may, optionally, demonstrate photosensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. Such articles are produced through the exchange of Ag.sup.+ ions for Na.sup.+ and/or K.sup.+ ions in a hydrated Na.sub.2 O and/or K.sub.2 O--SiO.sub.2 glass. The articles will demonstrate photosensitivity when the compositions thereof also contain halide ions.
