Abstract: A thermogelling, aliphatically modified polymer for use in drug delivery is described. Illustrative embodiments include poly(lactic-co-?-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic-co-?-caprolactone) hexanoate and poly(lactic-co-?-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic-co-?-caprolactone) laurate. Another illustrative embodiment includes a composition having a thermogelling amount of an aliphatically modified poly(lactic-co-?-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic-co-?-caprolactone) and an effective amount of a drug. The thermogelling polymers are made by bonding an aliphatic group to poly(lactic-co-?-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic-co-?-caprolactone). A method of use includes injecting a warm-blooded individual with a thermogelling amount of the aliphatically modified polymer and a drug.
Abstract: A carrier for delivering small interfering RNA (siRNA) into cells includes a cholesterol residue covalently bonded to oligoarginine. Mixing the siRNA with the carrier produces a complex-containing composition. Contacting a cell with the complex-containing composition results in delivery of the siRNA into the cell. Delivery of an siRNA targeted to vascular endothelial growth factor is a treatment for cancer. Methods of making the carrier and complex are also disclosed.
Abstract: A spinal fixation device and method including at least one longitudinal rod mounted substantially parallel to the axis of the spine and having a plurality of stem clamps adjustably mounted to the longitudinal rod. Each stem clamp has a stem extending outwardly therefrom with the diameter of the stem being identical to the diameter of the longitudinal rod. A plurality of C-clamps are provided and are mounted to the stems and to the longitudinal rods. Each C-clamp includes a female-tapered through-passage for matingly engaging a male tapered head of a pedicle screw. A plurality of pedicle screws are used to simultaneously anchor the C-clamps to the bone and to the respective stem and longitudinal rod.

Abstract: An emulsified liquid fuel utilizes minor proportions of petroleum, maximum proportions of water (H2O) and minimal amounts of acetone and alcohol, all readily available, plentiful and inexpensive.
Abstract: A system and method of notating and teaching music are disclosed. The system and method includes referencing notes and other musical representations using symbols, such as numbers, letters and color. For example, music notation may include at least one set, wherein a single set comprises twelve notes that may be numbered from 1-12, in which the numbers 1-9 may be used for the first nine notes and the letters x, y and z may be used for notes ten through twelve. Each series of twelve notes may be grouped together into a set, identified as “A Set”; “B Set”; “C Set” and so forth.
Abstract: A skin care article including a carrier and a moist application that includes partially hydrolyzed fucoidan. The partially hydrolyzed fucoidan may by sulfonated. The present invention also discloses a method of making a skin care article by partially hydrolyzing fucoidan, mixing it with a base and applying it to a carrier. The carrier may be flushable.
Abstract: A composition for oral delivery of a poorly absorbed drug is disclosed. The composition includes the drug, an enhancer for increasing absorption of the drug through the intestinal mucosa, a promoter, which alone does not increase absorption of the drug through the intestinal mucosa, but which further increases the absorption of the drug in the presence of the enhancer, and optionally a protector for protecting the drug from physical or chemical decomposition or inactivation in the gastrointestinal tract. Illustrative enhancers include sucrose fatty acid esters, and illustrative promoters include aminosugars and amino acid derivatives, such as poly(amino acids). Illustrative protectors include methylcellulose, poly(vinyl alcohol), and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone).
Abstract: Mixed micelles containing poly(L-histidine)-poly(ethylene glycol) block copolymer and poly(L-lactic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol) block copolymer are a pH-sensitive drug carrier that release the drug in an acidic microenvironment, but not in the blood. Since the microenvironment of solid tumors is acidic, these mixed micelles are useful for treating cancer, including those cancers exhibiting multidrug resistance. Targeting ligands, such as folate, can also be attached to the mixed micelles for enhancing drug delivery into cells. Methods of treating a warm-blooded animal with such a drug are disclosed.
Abstract: Plasmids useful for treating ischemic disease, such as ischemic heart disease, are described. The plasmids express vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) under the control of a promoter (RTP801) that is up-regulated under hypoxic conditions. Pharmaceutical compositions for treating ischemic disease include mixtures of the hypoxia-regulated VEGF plasmids and pharmaceutically acceptable carriers. Methods for treating ischemic disease include administering such pharmaceutical compositions to a person in need of such treatment.
Abstract: A stent having a multi-layered coating adhered to its surface which can prevent restenosis and thrombosis at the implant site. The stent coating is comprised of two layers. The first layer is a polymeric coating with one or more biologically active agent(s) dispersed therein. The second layer is comprised of a hydrophobic heparinized polymer that inhibits blood coagulation and provides a hydrophilic surface for reducing the friction between stent and lesion site. In preferred embodiments of the invention, the multi-layered stent is effective in deterring restenosis and thrombosis at the implant site. In these same preferred embodiments, the multi-layered stent is capable of reducing the burst release of the biologically active agents from the first layer and sustaining a release of an effective amount of these agents for a relatively extended period of time. Methods of applying the multi-layered coating to the stent surface are also part of this invention.
Abstract: A support member for supporting a roof of a subsurface space. The support member may include a base portion for defining a surface area to contact a ceiling of the subsurface space. One or more sockets may extend from the base for defining openings for receiving roof bolts therethrough. Accordingly, the support member may be configured to function as a washer for the roof bolts to support the roof material above the ceiling. The sockets may include covers for preventing the roof bolts from extending out of the sockets. The sockets may be oriented at angles with respect to the base such that when roof bolts are placed in the sockets, the roof bolts may extend at angles with respect to each other in a splayed configuration.
Abstract: A folding trailer may include a front deck and a rear deck that may be folded together into a compact configuration. The trailer may include a folding mechanism having a support base on opposing sides of the trailer. The support base may include one or more casters for supporting the trailer in a folded configuration and allowing the trailer to be easily moved. The folding mechanism may include a linkage structure which moves the support base into position when the trailer is folded and facilitate folding of the front and rear decks together.
