Abstract: A simplified optical receiver architecture capable of tracking and demultiplexing polarization-multiplexed signals, dynamically compensating for PMD using a variety of polarization controller technologies, and reducing the number of delay line demodulators by two for both DPSK and DQPSK modulation is illustrated. Once polarization is stabilized at the first stage of the cascaded system of the present invention, subsequent stages can be simplified and cost reduced.
Abstract: A safety device for disabling a positive pressure radiant tube heater upon failure of the heat exchanger and a corresponding method are described. This invention relates to the ability to detect a condition where a failure of the heat exchanger triggers the safety device and disables the heater. The safety device includes a low melt wire; an insulating sleeve positioned about the low melt wire, the wire and sleeve positioned on top of the reflector, a tension device to maintain the wire under tension; and a control device to disable the heater if the wire is discontinuous.
Abstract: A robot structure, suited especially for minimally invasive surgery, comprises two robot elements interconnected by a hinge. Using a force transmission the movable robot element of said robot structure, notably comprising two gripping elements, can be moved. A sensor element is provided for picking up forces occurring. To reduce the influence of motional forces, said force transmission is connected with a base element of said sensor element such that motional forces transmitted by said force transmission element are supported at the base element.

Abstract: A system for managing and updating a configuration database for a network element is described. The network element includes several managed objects. The managed objects represent logical representations that can be configured and modified through transactions executed by the network management software. The configuration management system includes a database manager that maintains a database file and a transaction log file. Each managed object includes an object reference key and a storage location pointer. Logical dependencies among objects are maintained through the linking of storage location pointers in the objects. Actions that modify an object are stored in the database file and the transaction log file. The present state of an object is stored by the database management system.

Abstract: A composition of a fiber reinforced multi-layered laminate that when compression-molded forms a composite having a Class-A surface that is resin rich. The fiber reinforced multi-layered laminate has an outer layer of a cyclic polyester oligomer containing a latent polymerization catalyst; a glass mat; a core layer of a cyclic polyester oligomer containing a latent polymerization catalyst; a second glass mat, and another outer layer of a cyclic polyester oligomer containing a latent polymerization catalyst. When compression molded, the combination of heat and pressure force the core layer through the permeable glass mats and toward the surface. The latent polymerization catalyst initiates polymerization of the cyclic polyester oligomer forming a Class-A surface that is resin rich. The core layer of a cyclic polyester oligomer thoroughly permeates the reinforcing fiber forming a composite having a middle, with a nearly uniform mixture of reinforced glass fiber and thermoplastic in situ polymerized resin.

Abstract: The present invention utilizes an XML-based protocol for controlling a plurality of settings to tie network equipment together, such as telecommunications, cable, enterprise, wireless, etc., across different transport network technologies, including optical, wireless, TDM, and packet. Network requests are carried in self-describing XML messages that are parsed by a general XML language parser. This changes the paradigm of XML used to control data records to XML controlling network equipment. This has many benefits including the ability to better function in the new IMS infrastructures being assembled.

Abstract: This document describes tools useful in relaying a data stream from a data device to a network tunnel, such as by enabling virtual switching using a provisional identifier to conceal a user identifier. These tools, for example, may use an inexpensive switch module to create virtual switch instances. To do so, the tools may assign data packets to a virtual switch instance by mapping the data packets to a particular provisional identifier and then modifying the data packets to include the provisional identifier. The switch module may then forward the data packets based on the provisional identifier rather than on the user identifier. The tools may remove the provisional identifier before forwarding the data packets to a destination.

Abstract: The present invention provides systems and methods for communication system control utilizing corrected forward error correction (FEC) error location identifiers in multi-level modulation scheme systems. The present invention utilizes precise error correction information, available for each FEC block of a particular code (including, but not limited to, block codes and concatenated block codes employing iterative decoding as well as convolutional codes (including turbo codes) and low-density parity-check code (LDPC) class codes) used (e.g., Bose, Ray-Chaudhuri, Hocquenghem (BCH), Reed-Solomon, etc.), as a result of the FEC decoding process to provide feedback to close the loop for control of a demodulator (i.e., receiver). Each error location can be uniquely traced back to a particular sub-rate signal path, with running, post-FEC corrected BER (bit error rate) calculations generated on each sub-rate signal.

Abstract: An optical communications network including a plurality of optical network elements and a plurality of network management systems. Each of network management systems executes a framework application. A communications link couples at least one of the network management systems and at least one of the optical network elements. A memory device is accessible by the network management system. The network management system communicates with the optical network element to detect a hardware feature present at the optical network element. The network management system determines a feature application supporting the hardware feature that is not supported by the framework application. The network management system loads the feature application from the memory device to the framework application and executes the feature application to manage the optical network element.
Abstract: A friction conveyor system comprises a conveyor means (10) including a plurality of conveyor elements (16,18) arranged transverse to the conveying direction (12). The conveyor elements (16,18) are partly driven and partly arranged for free rotation. A workpiece carrier (30) can be loosely placed on the conveyor means (10). For conveying the workpiece carriers (30), use is made of disk-shaped transmission elements (26) connected to the driven conveyor elements (18). The transmission elements (26) are in contact with a friction element (38). The friction elements (38) are connected to an actuation element (46). By actuation of the actuation element (46), the friction element (38) is moved into disengaged position in which the transmission elements (26) are not engaged with the friction elements (38) anymore.
