  • Patent number: 8265681
Abstract: Outer-loop power control methods and apparatus are disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment, a short-term block error rate is measured for a received signal, and a coarse adjustment to a target signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is calculated as a function of the short-term block error rate, a target block error rate, and a first loop tuning parameter. In some embodiments, a fine adjustment to the target SIR is also calculated, as a function of a smoothed block error rate, the target block error rate, and a second loop tuning parameter. The coarse adjustment provides quick responsiveness to received block errors, while the fine adjustment moderates the coarse adjustments by accounting for a longer-term view of the received block error rate. The target SIR adjustments disclosed herein may be computed in each of several iterations of an outer-loop power control loop.

  • Patent number: 8265213
Abstract: In wireless communication networks, potentially significant interference arises at a given targeted receiver because of unrelated transmissions from a neighboring, interfering transmitter. According to apparatuses and methods described and claimed herein, a first transmitter provides for cancellation of partially known interference at a targeted receiver by employing a transmit diversity based interference cancellation method, wherein it transmits diversity combinations of desired and interfering symbols. Correspondingly, the targeted receiver employs diversity combining of the received signals to cancel interference attributable to the interfering symbols.

  • Patent number: 8264308
Abstract: A magnet is affixed to a shaft or other pivoting or rotating member of a switch mechanism, on the axis of rotation. The radial position of the resulting magnetic field is monitored. A change in the magnetic field radial position, optionally in excess of a threshold, indicates the onset of switch actuation, prior to operative actuation of the switch mechanism. The radial position of the magnetic field is sensed by a magnetic rotary encoder. The detection of switch actuation onset may be used to remove current from a circuit prior to operative switch actuation. Because the magnet is rigidly affixed to the shaft, there is no lost motion. Because the shaft position and encoder are magnetically coupled, the detection mechanism contains no moving parts and no mechanical linkage or coupling, and its performance does not degrade due to shock, thermal effects, vibration, or wear.

  • Patent number: 8265628
Abstract: In a wireless communication network where base stations receive protocol data units (PDUs) from mobile stations for decompression and deciphering for ordered, sequential transfer as service data units (SDUs) to an associated core network, the teachings presented herein provide a method of supporting seamless handover of a mobile station from a source base station to a target base station. By way of example, the teachings herein apply to a network based on the E-UTRA specifications, as promulgated by the 3GPP. However, that example is non-limiting, as the teachings herein apply to any network that employs in-sequence data delivery and duplicate data detection at handover. Broadly, the source base station forwards out-of-sequence SDUs and corresponding sequence number information to the target base station in support of seamless handover, and the target base station uses that information to request retransmissions as needed for packet reordering.

  • Patent number: 8265565
Abstract: Transmitting non-polluting dummy pilot signals in a wireless communication network permits estimation of the downlink propagation channels between a number of joint transmitters and a lesser number of receivers. With fewer receivers than transmitters, loop back information from the receivers is not sufficient to determine the downlink propagation channels between the transmitters and receivers. For N transmitters and M receivers, (N?M) dummy pilot symbols are transmitted to facilitate downlink channel estimation. Each dummy pilot signal is transmitted to an imagined or dummy receiver that is virtually located such that its downlink channel coefficient vector is orthogonal to those of the real receivers. Transmit pre-filtering based on estimated propagation channels is applied to the information signals for the real receivers and to the dummy pilot signals. The extent to which the dummy pilot signals interfere at each receiver is an indication of mismatch between estimated and actual propagation channels.

  • Patent number: 8249011
Abstract: A wireless communication transceiver compensates a given received signal for retransmission interference, if (uncompensated) decoding of the given received signals fails. The transceiver estimates the retransmission interference bearing on the given received signal based on hypothesizing that another user (or users) mistakenly transmitted in the same time interval, using some or all of the same channel resources as were allocated to the given received signal. The transceiver may retain information in any given interval, indicating the channel allocations used for those user signals successfully received in that interval. The retained information allows the transceiver to determine, with respect to a given signal received in a current time interval, which other users would be interfering users if they mistakenly retransmitted in the current time interval.

  • Patent number: 8248915
Abstract: A mobile communication network includes a plurality of access nodes that can serve different roles in support of a communication session with a mobile station. An access node can serve as a connecting node that receives access requests the mobile station, as an anchor node to anchor a radio packet connection with a core network for the communication session; or as a primary node to store session information for the communication session. When the communication session is established, the anchor node for the communication session may select another access node to serve as the primary node. Session information can be stored at both the anchor node and primary node so that data can be delivered to the mobile station if either one of the anchor node and primary node are available.

  • Patent number: 8244305
Abstract: Secure, digital, packet-switched, voice telephony calls are wirelessly transmitted in an efficient manner that reduces air interface bandwidth consumption by encrypting only vocoder data frames containing encoded speech, and not encrypting vocoder data frames that do not contain speech, such as those containing silence parameters. The collective reduced bandwidth consumption across a large number of voice telephony calls may allow for the admission of one or more new calls during times of voice telephony congestion. Not encrypting the silence parameters does not compromise call privacy or security, since the silence data frames do not carry any speech. The classification of encoded data frames as containing speech or not may be performed in a variety of ways.

  • Patent number: 8238499
Abstract: The teachings herein disclose interference cancellation processing that uses hard decision logic for simplified estimation of interfering signals, in combination with soft scaling of the hard decisions for better interference cancellation performance, particularly in low signal quality conditions. In one aspect, the soft scaling may be understood as attenuating the amount of interference cancellation applied by a receiver, in dependence on the dynamically changing received signal quality at the receiver. More attenuation is applied at lower signal quality because the hard decisions are less reliable at lower signal qualities, while less (or no) attenuation is applied at higher signal qualities, reflecting the higher reliability of the hard decisions at higher signal qualities. Signal quality may be quantized into ranges, with a different value of soft scaling factor used for each range, or a soft scaling factor may be calculated for the continuum of measured signal quality.
