  • Patent number: 6453461
Abstract: In a first aspect, the invention is a method for interfacing a generic program with the ASL code in an ACPI system. The method comprises storing information from a generic program in a shared memory; accessing the ASL code; and retrieving the stored information with the ASL code. In a second aspect, the invention is a method for testing ASL PnP code in an ACPI system. The method comprises identifying a configurable PnP device; disabling the identified configurable PnP device; testing the disabled, configurable PnP device for a configuration; and verifying that, for the tested configuration, the resulting current resources match the set resources. In variations of these aspects, the methods may be performed by instructions encoded on a computer-readable, program storage medium and used to program a computer.

  • Patent number: 6451657
Abstract: A process is disclosed for fabricating a transistor having a channel length that is smaller than lengths resolvable using common photolithography techniques. A gate oxide layer is formed over a lightly doped semiconductor substrate. A gate conductor layer is then deposited over the gate oxide layer. The upper surface of the gate conductor layer includes a future conductor area laterally bounded by a spaced pair of target areas, wherein the lateral distance between the spaced pair of target areas is preferably chosen at the photolithography threshold. Nitrogen is implanted into the spaced pair of target areas to form a spaced pair of nitrogen bearing regions within the gate conductor layer, thereby defining a nitrogen free region in the gate conductor layer. A thermal anneal reduces the width of the nitrogen free region. A variable thickness oxide layer is then grown over the entire semiconductor topography and anisotropically etched to form an oxide mask over the reduced-width nitrogen free region.

  • Patent number: 6452956
Abstract: An electrode for a smelting furnace comprises an elongate casing including a plurality of spaced, inwardly projecting ribs extending radially from an inner surface of the casing towards the center of the casing. A central core of a pre-baked electrode, typically a solid or hollow pre-baked graphite electrode, is disposed within the casing free of the projecting ribs and defines a space between the core and the inner surface of the casing. A heating zone is located intermediate the ends of the casing so that a carbonaceous electrode paste received or receivable within the space between the core and the inner surface of the casing is calcined into a baked, hard form upon entering the heating zone. The projecting ribs assist in baking the electrode paste and in anchoring or supporting the electrode to reduce the risk of nipple or joint fracture of adjacent pre-baked electrodes. The electrodes are particularly useful in the smelting of ferrochromium and in the reduction of ores such as ilmenite.

  • Patent number: 6450259
Abstract: A surface processor uses an environmental profile to determine the sub-surface length of tubing disposed in a well bore. Information relating to tubing properties is stored in a memory module of the surface processor. The environmental profile includes data relating to well bore ambient conditions and the operating parameters of well equipment. Surface processor calculates the tubing elongation or length reduction corresponding to the environmental profile. Surface processor may repeat this process to develop a measured depth chart for a well. Logging operations performed in conjunction with the sub-surface length calculations allows formation data to be associated with the measured depth chart.

  • Patent number: 6449995
Abstract: An automatic locking mechanism engages a deadbolt lock after a prescribed time interval following entry. The mechanism employs a spring-operated mechanical timer, which may be actuated when a key or thumbturn is turned to unlock the door, and avoids the need for a key to set the deadbolt. The mechanism includes a gear system for retracting and inserting the deadbolt and a mechanical restraint to withhold the deadbolt until the timer has expired. In a suggested embodiment, a cam attached to one of the timer gears removes the restraint when the timer runs down. This deploys the deadbolt, automatically locking the door. In another embodiment, automatic locking may optionally be disabled by inhibiting coupling between the gear system and the timer spring.

  • Patent number: 6453240
Abstract: A method for creating a frequency domain semblance for use in conjunction with acoustic logging tools is disclosed. Such a frequency domain semblance may be obtained by transforming an acoustic signal received at multiple depths into the frequency domain, combining the received waveforms corresponding to the different depth, and expressing the result in a graph with slowness and frequency axes. This graph shows the frequency-slowness location for the acoustic signal, as well as for other related signals that may inadvertently be generated by the acoustic logging tool. This information may then be used to more clearly measure the slowness of the received acoustic signal. Another aspect of the invention is the treatment of two or more time domain semblances as probability density functions of the slowness for an acoustic signal. This enables the combination of time domain semblances from the same depth in the wellbore.

  • Patent number: 6449677
Abstract: A high speed connection apparatus, method, and system is provided for peripheral components on digital computer systems. The peripheral component interconnect (PCI) specification is used as a baseline for an extended set of commands and attributes. The extended command and the attribute are issued on the bus during the clock cycle immediately after the clock cycle when the initial command was issued. The extended commands and attributes utilize the standard pin connections of conventional PCI devices and buses making the present invention backward-compatible with existing (conventional) PCI devices and legacy computer systems. Alternate embodiments of the present invention utilize a side-band address port (SBA port) to enable multiple targets to receive the same set of data. The conventional PCI command encoding is modified and the extended command is used to qualify the type of transaction and the attributes being used by the initiator of the transaction.

  • Patent number: 6445738
Abstract: A system and method for generating trick play video streams, such as fast forward and fast reverse video streams, from an MPEG compressed normal play bitstream. The system receives a compressed normal play bitstream and filters the bitstream by extracting and saving only portions of the bitstream. The system preferably extracts I-frames and sequence headers, including all weighting matrices, from the MPEG bitstream and stores this information in a new file. The system then assembles or collates the filtered data into the proper order to generate a single assembled bitstream. The system also ensures that the weighting matrixes properly correspond to the respective I-frames. This produces a bitstream comprised of a plurality of sequence headers and I-frames. This assembled bitstream is MPEG-2 decoded to produce a new video sequence which comprises only one out of every X pictures of the original, uncompressed normal play bitstream.

  • Patent number: 6439130
Abstract: The invention concerns an inter-axle shear stiffening apparatus for a self-steering rail bogie and a self-steering rail bogie equipped with such apparatus. The apparatus has axle structures including axles (16, 16.1) which are journalled in axle box bearings (20, 20.1). Radial arms (30, 30.1) are connected rigidly to respective axle structures of the bogie an extend towards one another in a fore and aft direction. A lateral force transmitting device (60) acts between the arms to transmit lateral forces between them while accommodating relative lateral movement between them. The design of this device is such that, irrespective of the extent of relative movement between the arms, the device can only transmit between them lateral forces of limited, predetermined magnitude. This value is chosen such that the bogie is provided with sufficient inter-axle shear stiffness to enhance its hunting stability without excessive force couples being applied to the axle box bearings.
